Jon Gruden on Derek Carr: This guy’s a great quarterback

Raiders quarterback Derek Carr said before the season started that he is “tired of the talk” and just wants to “go out and play football and not care about the other stuff.”

With two weeks under his belt, that’s looking like the right approach to the season. Carr followed up a good performance against the Panthers in a Week One win by going 28-of-38 for 282 yards and three touchdowns in a 34-24 win over the Saints on Monday night.

Carr reiterated his disinterest in talk after the game, but head coach Jon Gruden was willing to spare a few words. Gruden noted that Carr has had to play with a variety of receivers behind a shifting offensive line the last couple of years and still put up big numbers in 2019 while praising his play so far this season.

“This guy’s a great quarterback,” Gruden said. “We’re surrounding him with better players. And once our defense I think starts playing to their potential, he can even be better. He does so much with the ball and without the ball and behind the scenes that I think Raiders fans should really be proud of him, and I know I am.”

The Raiders will try for a 3-0 start in New England next weekend and achieving that goal will lead to the kind of chatter about Carr that even the quarterback might not mind.

  1. Gruden did what he could to motivate Carr — he is publicly backing him, while applying pressure with the addition of Mariota. The Raiders have a much better team this season.

  2. I’m telling you man, that guy is a great QB. He’s a grinder, a baller, totally my kind of dude. I just love that guy, man!

  3. Hahaham sure there Gruden. Fluke win. He’s just another Trubisky, He will screw up again soon.

Gruden is so washed up even he believes his own lies.

  4. He has to say that, he’s so full of himself and basically just getting lucky at this point. We all know that there is good and bad Carr. Raiders can’t hang with Mahomes, lol.

  5. Still gun shy from those injuries a few years back, but he is still the guy I want out there. He needs to get it to Ruggs though! Just gotta get that defense going so they can take some pressure off the offense.

  6. Carr has a weak arm and underthrows a lot of passes. He had a decent night but the Saints game him a gift: 200 penalty yards at the worst time killing drives or it would have been a blowout.
7 penalties in a row for the Saints at one time

  7. Haters gotta hate. If I give you a group of flunkies to be on a team at your job, you’re work will look like crap, too. Football is a team sport. You can count on one hand the number of QBs who could win consistently with mediocre talent on either side of the ball, let alone both…..and they’re all in the Hall of Fame.

  8. If Carr goes out and beats NE next week I will pay more attention to him and his greatness but as of now he is one of many NFL quarterbacks who has not distinquished any greatness in their careers.great qbs make the playoffs every year or nearly every year and go on to super bowls.still waiting on the great Derrick Carr to show up there.

  9. Gruden is hyping up Carr in hopes of boosting the trade in value.

BTW, when is Nathan Peterman gonna get a shot?
Gruden should just admit that he whiffed on his projection of him.

  10. He looked pretty good last night, as did the Raiders. Waller is ridiculous and their running game. The stats say they only ran for 116 yards but it sure looked like every time they ran the ball they picked up yardage in chunks.

  11. chucky is too damned emotional. since hes been back he seems to not like carr too much….even though he mightve been a mvp the year he got hurt kindve like wentz. now that theyre off to a good start he is so great. whys it gotta be from one extreme to the next??? not every women is a joy taylor or a rosie O’Donnell there is a huge mediocre area. so thats why im asking why does everything gotta be all great or all bad with chucky? like instead of “this guys great” say hes “off to a great start. hopefully hell keep it up all season….barring injury.”?

  12. Enjoyment of the day is reading the h8r’s comments. Terrible Tuesday for the h8r’s, especially for those that watched their team lose, then witnessed a Raiders win. LOL.
Carr out played Brees. Gruden out coached Payton. Raiders are a better team in all phases of the game.

  13. He is and always has been playoff caliber …broken leg followed by fractures back created the obvious gap. Now he’s healthy and dominating – case closed.

Carr is the most inconsistent QB in the league. Hands down

    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

    Mitch Trubisky: “Hold my beer.”

  15. Jon Gruden is coaching better than anyone in the game right now. Not only do his play designs constantly have receivers wide open, but he’s mixing the runs and passes better than anyone. But it’s also the big decisions. He threw the bomb to Ruggs late in the game and drew a flag. He decided to attempt a 54 yard field goal to win the game. And that’s just the coaching. His personnel decisions are paying off too. He took flack for drafting Kolton Miller in the first round, but Miller is playing as well as any LT, and Carr is benefitting from the protection. He took a gamble on Richie Incognito, and he’s playing pro bowl ball. He signed the tight end Waller, and he’s the best TE in football. All his draft picks and free agent signings are paying off.

Dude you’re clueless. Carr has one of the strongest arms in the league. Underthrowing? He did it once to Waller when he never stepped into the ball. He overthrew Ruggs, the fastest player in the league, twice. Keep hating.

Amen, brother! Every team has its haters, but Raiders haters seem to be the silliest ones.

  18. Derek Carr is a good quarterback… sometimes. I won’t psychoanalyze him, but it helps to have a burner like Ruggs and a go-to target like Waller. I hope Waller can stay off the dope or the smack. I would assign him a platoon of addiction sponsors. And perhaps a step forward for skittish Carr that he had that game behind back-up linemen. The starting Vegas o-line is the league’s priciest, and should help give pie-eyed Derek the peace-of-mind of he needs to not end up leaving Gruden visibly disgusted.

  19. The Hate on this thread is strong my friends. Great game by Carr and the Raiders! 👍🏻

  20. Carr is the perfect QB for a west coast offense. He is accurate and has a quick release. After watching the first two weeks I don’t need Carr to throw bombs down the field ball control offense is the recipe until the defense can prove they are above average. You possess the ball the opposing offense can’t score. It’s death by a thousand cuts.

  21. @raidersareterrible the Chiefs barely beat the Chargers. They get behind ten plus points against this Raiders team good luck.

  22. No one cares joe, you can post under 50 names….we all know it’s you trying to amp up the terrible Raiders fan base.

Raiders still suck and they won’t get past Mahomes.
