NFL has 11 teams at 2-0, tying a record high

In a 32-team league, the maximum possible number of 2-0 teams is 16. The most 2-0 teams ever emerging from the first two weeks of an NFL is 11.

It’s happened three times before. It happened again this year.

The Cardinals, Bills, Ravens, Bears, Packers, Chiefs, Raiders, Rams, Seahawks, Steelers, and Titans are each 2-0.

Eleven teams also started 2-0 in 2008, 2006, and 1998. (In 1998, the league had only 30 teams.)

With only four of the 2-0 teams facing other 2-0 teams this weekend (Rams at Bills and Chiefs at Ravens), there could be as many as nine 2-0 teams after Week Three.

  1. The “maximum possible of sixteen” 2-0 teams after two weeks can only happen if each of the 16 winning teams in week-1 plays one of the sixteen losing teams from week-1. As an example, Washington (1-0) played Arizona (1-0); hence, due to the predetermined schedule, at least one of those two 1-0 teams that would be included in the theoretical “maximum possible of sixteen” is guaranteed to not be undefeated. For week-2, there were five games featuring two 1-0 teams: Washington-Cardinals, Chiefs-Chargers, Patriots-Seahawks, Jaguars-Titans, and Saints-Raiders. Therefore, for this season anyway, after the week-1 games, the theoretical maximum possible 2-0 teams after week-2 is… eleven!

  2. 4 out of the 5 best NFC teams are from the NFC West. That is the story. My Seahawks look fantastic and could easily finish third in this division.

  3. There’s certainly some luck of the schedule here, but it does feel like there’s a bigger disparity between the haves and have-nots. Some of those bad teams will rally and better-looking teams will fall apart, so the end result will probably look like the standard bell curve of parity.

Unless there are teams on a bye there will be no 2-0 teams after week 3 😉
