J.C. Jackson: Patriots have “got something” for Darren Waller

Raiders tight end Darren Waller officially is questionable for Sunday’s showdown with the Patriots, due to a knee injury. If he plays, he’ll definitely have New England’s attention.

He’s good,” cornerback J.C. Jackson told reporters this week, via the Boston Herald. “We’ve got something for him this weekend.”

They’d better have something for him. Defensive back Devin McCourty compared Waller not to other tight ends, but to receivers like Brandon Marshall and Calvin Johnson.

“He brings every challenge you can think of,” McCourty said. “It’s covering him, it’s tackling him, it’s knowing where he is in their offense, how they might use him. They use him so many different ways, you’re not going to get a true bead on it.”

Earlier in the week, coach Bill Belichick offered over-the-top praise for Waller.

“I think it’s been such a long time since we’ve seen a guy like this,” Belichick told reporters. “He’s really got great receiver skills, played receiver. He’s got a lot of length like a big receiver does, but he’s got very good quickness and he blocks very competitively. He’s not afraid to mix it up. So he’s definitely more than a receiver playing tight end, but he’s got all the skills that can come inside. He’s a very good inside receiver, which sometimes the wideouts have trouble making that move in there. He’s really been impressive to watch.

“We saw him last year, looked at him in the offseason and you just see him doing everything — playing wide, playing in the backfield, playing tight end, running deep, catch-and-run plays, blocking, flash plays, point of attack plays. So, very versatile player, pretty unique guy in the league. There’s some really good tight ends, but nobody really does more than this guy does and he does it very well. He’s got excellent hands and makes a lot of tough catches. He’s definitely a matchup problem.”

He definitely is. Waller has 18 catches on 24 targets through two 2020 games. He caught 12 on Monday night against the Saints.

  1. I believe Renfrow is gonna have a big game. The Pats LB are weak so they’re gonna exploit it, especially with the focus on shutting down Wallet.

  2. They’ve probably seen what happens to Carr when he’s pressured. They’ll probably use a lot of cornerback blitzes, or other blitzes that would force Waller to move in tighter to help with pass protection. But Gruden has seen it all. He’ll be ready.

  3. I’ll tell you what they don’t have, a DB named Chung! Week 14 against Kelce that was the only player that covered the KC threat. So now what, BB is going to put his second best man on Waller cause Chung opted out?

I think Gruden has something for YOU jaskasson

They’re going to try to double him to make him go to Renfrow and Aghalor.

    Gilmore will abuse Agahlor.

    Ruggs being out changes things.

    Jones will abuse Renfrow.

I would imagine a rotation of JoeJuuan Williams and Jackson will go on Waller.

Waller is really a big WR.

The Pats LBs are so weak? lol

Adrian Phillips and Dugger (sneaky good game vs Seattle) look really good to me in weeks 1 and 2!

Phillips had a pick in Week 1.

NE is using Safeties as LBs now. Try to keep up. BB is many moves ahead.

Carr 12-15, 127 yards, 2 TD’s vs the Saints against the blitz. They have to get there if they want damage.

LOL? Morrow had a pick last week and you don’t see me acting like he’s a stud. He is awful just like the Pats LB. Some of those guys are backups without certain players opting out. They looked good in Seattle? Pretty sure their entire D got lit up. Renfrow for the win.

  8. It will be interesting to see the most overhyped AFC team, the Patriots, when they have to play someone of merit. I suspect the Raiders are not a one trick receiver pony and it is hard to take away someone with so many intangible qualities as this Raider player has – he is seemingly like Kittle and Travis K wrapped up in one. This guy finds ways to get open like those other two guys do. You can cover him all day and he’ll still cut you to pieces.

Pats don’t blitz much. They are more of a strategic style blitz team.Quality, not quantity.

BB and Pats D>>>Payton and Saints D.

  10. Yeah, he’s a little like Kittle and Kelsey rolled into one (eyeroll). What about Gronk, TGonzalez and Ditka too? Hometown fans, gotta love ’em. Pats LBs are terrible though. I might challenge JBentley to a footage for charity. Think I’d have a shot. JWilliams will be on Waller, with help. Maybe he can finally justify trading up in the 2nd rnd to get him. Pats win easily.

  11. Bruins had a great year, Celts are in the Conference Championship series and the Pats seem to be better than a lot of people thought. Especially since they didn’t have to start Stidham. The last 20 yrs of being a Boston Sports fan have been sp2ool tough.

  12. Belichick owns Gruden and Derrick Carr gets rattled under pressure. The Patriots should win this one and start off 2-1 as I predicted before the season started.

  13. It’s “ wicked funny “ as we say in New England that raider fans are actually making fun of Boston fans ! After all it is the Raiders that left Oakland!!
We still have our SIX time Super Bowl Champs in New England !
    Go Pats!!

If they put Gilmore on Agholor then the Raiders have already won. He’s at best the Raiders 5th option. Waller, Jacobs, Renfrow, Edwards are higher in the pecking order. Not the best use of the reigning DPOY.

Seen it all, hugh? Yet he has only one super bowl win with a team that he didn’t build, never developed his own qb, the only thing he has seen is his ego inflated by network shills and sycophants. Definitely not a Patriots fan, but to think he’s seen as much as what Bill Belichick can cobble together with a team depleted by opt outs, that’s kind of stretching it, even for a raiders fan.

    Exactly.

Some people who are so jealous of the Pats want to delude themselves every year and just torture themselves.

Newton looked better on Sunday night than Brady did last year with
almost the exact same personnel, minus James white, even being available.

That’s technically bad news for Pats Haters. Newton just got there and is already managing a game way better than Brady did almost at any time
last year after Brown was released.
