Myles Gaskin outplaying Jordan Howard, Matt Breida in Miami

The Dolphins thought they needed to improve at running back this offseason, so they signed Jordan Howard to a two-year, $9.75 million contract and traded a fifth-round draft pick for Matt Breida. Little did the Dolphins know that their best running back was already on the roster.

That running back was Myles Gaskin, a 2019 seventh-round draft pick who has emerged as the lead back this season while Howard and Breida have been non-factors.

Through three games, Gaskin has 152 rushing yards and 91 receiving yards. Howard and Breida combined have just 75 rushing yards and two receiving yards.

If the Dolphins had expected Gaskin to emerge as their top running back, they certainly wouldn’t have signed Howard and traded for Breida. But Gaskin serves as a good reminder of how often productive runners can be acquired without spending much on them.

  1. Gaskin is a legit NFL RB. He might not be the best pass blocker, but he can do everything else very well.

  2. Give it time folks, Gaskin has been the only one getting the bulk of the plays. Once the others get involved more the backfield will be rock solid.
Brieda will get his chances also. Howard is more of a short yardage back too. Gaskin needs to get better at blocking and picking up the blitz.
It is real early and before long the others will be getting touches also

  3. Chan Gailey is starting to show why Coach Flores wanted him. The offense played well against Buffalo and his play calling was brilliant in Thursday night’s game. Gaskin is a better fit for what he likes to do. They are fortunate that the two rookies starting on the offensive line look to be solid players (so far). This is still a .500 team at best, but they have some building blocks to build from. It will all depend on how Tua looks when he finally gets a chance to play.

  4. Through three games, Gaskin has 152 rushing yards and 91 receiving yards. Howard and Breida combined have just 75 rushing yards and two receiving yards. So you’re saying gaskin is the one eyed man in the village of the blind?

  5. Well it should be pointed out that Howard has been their goal line and short yardage back and has 3 tds in 3 games.

  6. “Well it should be pointed out that Howard has been their goal line and short yardage back and has 3 tds in 3 games.”

Yeah, but he has 16 carries for 13 yards….. Against the jags he ha 3 carries for 1 yard. So this means our short yardage back, what hes here for, gets stuffed on 1 yard carries often. If you are a rb and you cant even get 1 yard on command you aren’t a good short yardage rb. BTW howards avgs 0.8 yards a carry on the season

  7. Enjoy him while he can. He’s hungry and playing for a contract. Once he’s a free agent they won’t be able to afford him anymore.

However, as you can see in Jacksonville, there are plenty of RBs coming out of the college ranks every year. You can find a gem even on day 3 or even in free agency. Robinson (JAX) has been impressive.

  8. Using Howard and Breida sparingly could work out well as the season moves along with Gaskin getting the majority reps now. Those two seeing majority action later and then Gaskin comes in here and there all rested could spell trouble for defenses .. especially late in games played in Miami.
