Bears coaches to huddle on quarterback decision tonight

Bears coach Matt Nagy made a quarterback change on Sunday based on a gut feeling. His next move will be more deliberate.

Nagy spoke to PFT by phone after Sunday’s come-from-way-behind win over the Falcons, and he addressed among other things the decision to remove starting quarterback Mitch Trubisky for backup Nick Foles.

“Sometime, you have to go with your gut,” Nagy said, explaining that the decision came in the moment, based on the fact that the offense under Trubisky was struggling on third down and in the red zone. “It’s a feel you get as things go on.”

He said that he explained the move to Trubisky as tactical. “None of it is personal,” Nagy said he told Trubisky. “It’s all task-related.”

Nagy said that when the team returns to Chicago later tonight, he’ll huddle with the offensive coaches “to figure out where they are moving forward.”

He said they need to make a decision quickly, because they need to focus immediately on their next opponent, the Colts.

“We’ve just got to make a good decision,” Nagy said, emphasizing that “you have to take emotion out of [it].”

“If it’s Mitch, you roll,” Nagy said. “If it’s Nick, you roll. I don’t want it to be back and forth.”

More specifically, Nagy said he doesn’t want to do again what he did today. Even if what he did today worked.

The fact that Nagy doesn’t want to repeat what he did today suggests that the arrow may be pointing toward Foles. “Nick’s strength is his experience,” Nagy said. “Mitch’s strength is that he’s growing.”

To avoid further growing pains that could result in Foles entering the game to save the day, Foles may be the answer.

However it goes, the Bears have three win in three games. Those victories are money in the bank, and the Bears are moving in the right direction, even if they currently don’t know which direction the quarterback decision will go.

  1. The whole world can see that trubisky is not the answer, how can they not see it? Start foles and ride with him. Trubisky is not a franchise quarterback so stop wasting your time.

  2. “Mitch’s strength is that he’s growing.”

    ————————

Actually Mitch’s only strength is his draft position.

  3. Easy decision to make. Foles.

First Qb in History to score 5 TDs for only 20 points. Bears shouldve won by 17.

  4. The closest to the situation I can remember is when the Cardinals benched John Skelton despite being up 10-0 against the Falcons at the time.

I think you have to give Trubisky another start. He came back in Week 1 against the Lions and with the way the Falcons were playing maybe he would have come back today. It’s not like Foles was hitting that many incredible passes anyway.

But if you thought he won the job in camp, and he did at least an okay job the first two games it is unfair to bench him.

Matt Nagy knows that a win here and a win there could be the deciding factor as to whether or not he is the coach of this team in 2021. You’re only going to make the decision for the Bears brass that much easier if you go to Nick Foles, he doesn’t perform well, and you go back to Trubisky.

  5. What’s there to huddle about?

” It’s not like Foles was hitting that many incredible passes anyway.”

Bruh he threw 3 TD’s in one quarter

  6. It’s unbelievable that after Foles led an epic comeback, there are still Mitch apologists here. Yall are almost as bad as the Wentz cultists.

  7. “Bruh he threw 3 TD’s in one quarter”

Bruh, he completed half of his passes while the defense was in a prevent.

  8. This is PR talk. It’s Nick Foles, but Nagy wants to tell Mitch directly before telling the media.

The whole team actually loves Mitch believe it or not, and the locker room culture has been fantastic since Nagy took over in 2018 even during last season’s struggles. Now if Foles can execute Nagy’s offense as it’s meant to be run, people will see how great of a head coach he really is.

  9. how is this even a discussion. Trubisky struggles while Nick is in complete command of the offense. How could you bench him after he saved the game like that

  10. It’s Foles….the only question I have is well some team trade for him since so many quarterback situations are messed from the Giants, Washington, Broncos and Jets

  11. It doesn’t matter what your name is, get drafted by the Bears to play QB and you are doomed to mediocrity. Unless you are the punky QB, McMahon..

  12. @bobcobb301

Pretty stats are for losers. Who cares what his completion percentage is? He scored 3 TDs on that “prevent” defense. The objective is to win the game and he won it.

  13. Trubisky may be growing, but his time is about up on his potential. He needs a new team, new system, and will probably have a decent year or two as a journeyman. Maybe he becomes a Rich Gannon and finds his way, but Nagy needs to make Foles the guy, and hopefully he stays in one piece.

  14. after Trubisky got benched did he get a big hug from Nagy and start weeping on his coaches shoulder like last year? just asking didn’t see the game…..

  15. The Trubisky hate is pretty pathetic. If you watched him in 2017 as a rookie, he showed flashes, he then followed that up with a strong 2018 season. Last year the media decided that they were just going to attack Trubisky all year. Nagy is a trash head coach, terrible tactician – has a 240lb RB with speed to burn rotting on the bench in Ryan Nall, has a 2nd round stud TE in Cole Kmet that is barely used. Meanwhile they continue to play QB carousel rather than develop an actual offense with tactics and game planning. He’s just as bad as Gase with the Jets. Two clueless bums killing young QBs.

  16. As a fan I was very happy to see Foles in there , Then they showed Mitch on the bench he looked devastated as a Human being I felt sorry for him, It was his dream to be the Chicago Bears Starting QB a cursed position really since McMahon we have had some ok play from either Jim Miller/Shane Mathews/Eric Kramer but it’s always some guy with great potential that never gets it done like Bobby Douglas Vince Evans Jay Cutler and now Mitch Trubisky great talent that never becomes your franchise, Well at least we don’t hear Sid Luckman as much as before. I really hope Mitch get another shot somewhere he didnt play much in college and hes a great guy .

  17. I don’t see Foles as any better than Trubisky in the long run. Foles had a few good games at the most opportune time possible. Other than that he’s very erratic. Chicago’s problem is they don’t have a good quarterback.

  18. Bruh he threw 3 TD’s in one quarter.
    —-‐–‐——————-

How many dod Dack throw in 3 minutes against this team,?

It’s the Falcons….Trubisky would have come back….Unfair to bench the guy because he had a bad few minutes….People act like Foles is some type of savior…he s going to have the same funk here and there….he ain’t young….see what you have in Trubisky.

But it is obvious that stafft is scared for their jobs.

  19. Nick is a terrific spot player but hasn’t had much success as a long term starter. Also,I just want to add that the she-kaaah-go accent is super annoying.

  20. Sometimes certain people have a magic about them. It may be nothing and lightning may not strike again. But Bears fans ( and my grandfather was one (R.I.P.) do you really want to bet against this? I’ve see it as an Eagles fan. I’m hoping My man St Nick can deliver for him even though it’s a little late.

  21. Foles isn’t exactly old at 31. Why do people keep acting like he’s ancient? He’s a super bowl mvp champion, in the prime of his career. His “spottiness” is still better than the utterly consistent trash that Mitch has shown.

  22. Foles’ strength is coming off the bench. Trubisky is really not the answer. He’s had time to learn how to read defenses but he struggled mightily in this game. Foles is smarter and more accurate, has a better handle on reading the defense. We really need to run with Foles until he either gets injured or starts throwing picks then we go back to Trubisky.

  23. The Bears should stick with Trubisky. Mitch has earned his fair share of criticism, but let’s be real. He’s been harshly judged against the likes of Mahomes and Watson. Love him or not, he has shown upside. Foles on the other hand, has shown time and time again that he is not to be trusted with the starting job. He’s only a stud coming off the bench or when it’s understood that he’s the backup and not the starter. Foles is good to have on the bench. But let Trubisky start.

  24. Bears fans are good fans but they have no idea what the hell good quarterbacking is. The best they’ve had it in the modern era is jay frickin cutler and everybody knows what a loser he was. Please stop
With trubisky, he’s finished in Chicago, Foles is the guy for now. How long That lasts who knows, Chicago has always had crappy qbs.

  25. If that ARob TD held, Foles rating would go from 95 to 115.

Foles came in and operated, cold mind you. Give him first team reps and we’ll see how it goes.

    Signed,
    A Mitch Fan

  26. I never really liked Trubisky’s play, it does seem weird to pull him at this time. The Bears were 2-0, Trubisky has 6TDs with 3Ints and they were playing the Falcons who have a rep for losing big leads.

Trubisky seems like a nice guy though. I hope that he gets a chance somewhere else.

  27. The whole point is to win. I feel
Badly for Trubisky but if he didn’t want to be benched play better, this isn’t try your best and get a participation trophy

  28. No way I can hate on Trubisky – he’s a hard worker and well liked. If it’s time for a change, it’s time for a change. I really doubt Foles is the long-term answer, either, but he may be good enough for the moment. The Bears really need to be drafting more QBs. The lack of investment in position is terrible. Trubisky is the only draft pick.

  29. “see what you have in Trubisky” says neutral28.

This is Trubisky’s 4th year. The Bears have seen what they have in him. And it is not enough.

“afraid for their jobs” – based on what? Nagy has a strong 23-13 record as a head coach. Ryan Pace might be afraid for his job, but there’s no reason to fire Nagy – unless he goes back to Trubisky.

Pace doesn’t want to admit the mistake he made, although he mostly did by trading for Foles and not picking up Mitch’s option. This is just the final act.

  30. I think Tribusky’s time is running out. Foles played well in relief but can he do it again this Sunday? I think the Bears should roll with Foles so Tribusky can learn a little more and get time to learn from a vet. Thats hard to do in this results now league.

I get it the coaches don’t want to go back and forth and I don’t blame them. Foles is not as mobile as Trubisky but he is more decisive on his throws. Bears are off to a great start, Foles gives a better chance IMHO. The Bears have an awesome defense all they need is a good offense that is steady. They’ll have that with Foles and could make a deep playoff run. Yeah I know it was only the A T L, but good teams win those types of games.

Exciting time to be axBears fan.

    Signed Die Hard Vikings fan.

  31. Not sure what the coaches could really huddle about tonight? Trubisky just is not good at the progressions when choice 1 goes bad.

  32. Bears can’t QB. Never have.

Ride Foles out and then start over again in the draft as Mitch will be gone and your only QB will be a 32 yr old who’s never played a full season.

I hope I see them draft and develop a franchise QB in my lifetime. I’m not confident, but miracles do happen.

  33. LOL I love it. The Mitch haters are out in full effect. Well here are a few facts for ya.

Nick Foles was traded for by Jacksonville and given $88 million dollars. Less than 1 year later they traded him and gave the starting QB position to a 6th round pick.

Foles could not beat out 6th rounder Gardner Minshew for the position and lost every single game as a starter in Jacksonville.

Foles rarely has made it through a season without getting hurt so expect this move to be a short one.

Foles has ONLY played well in an eagles uniform, and last time I checked the bears are not the eagles.

Enjoy these times while you can, because I see a few kyle orton like games in the future. And please don’t complain when that happens.

    ———————————————————————-
Bobby Douglas? Great potential? The guy could not throw at all, he was Tim Tebow before Tim Tebow.

  35. Never understood the negative views of Foles. The press fans and some scouts are way too impressed by potential talent. It’s why people just can’t believe Wentz keeps losing. They just watch these guys “practice” and measure certain physical traits. The QB position is SO MUCH more.

It’s making the third and 8 throw -UNDER PRESSURE – to the right guy. And NOT throwing it into the dirt or 10 feet over the receivers head. ITs being at your best when everyone else is panicking. Foles has proven to be that guy SEVERAL TIMES in his career, even on the biggest stage and under the greatest pressure.

  36. “I think you have to give Trubisky another start.”

Is BobCobb really Ryan Pace’s burner account??

“He came back in Week 1 against the Lions and with the way the Falcons were playing maybe he would have come back today.”

He had ten points through two-and-a-half quarters.

“The way they were playing” only started occurring once Foles got in there. It is not “unfair” to bench him. Trubisky played terribly in the second half against the Giants and terribly against the Falcons, whereas Foles should have had 5 TDs. You’ve seen everything you could possibly need to know about Trubisky – he is not the guy. You have to give Foles the chance, not Trubisky another chance. Trubisky is not consistent and he never will be – he always has 2-3 tragic throws per game that should be picked. I believe it is unfair to the rest of the team to continue rolling Mitch Trubisky out there.

You forgot one thing, Minshew is a better QB than Tribusky. Foles should have been the starter all along but I think coach Nagy gave Mr Biscuit the benefit of being the starter out of respect and to see if he can do better.

Injuries? Trubisky missed how many games last year and the year before?

  38. Why they even debating Tribisky vs Foles. They should be hammering themselves as to why they didn’t draft Patrick Mahomes or DeSean Watson.
