Bill Belichick: We’ll need to play and coach “our best game” against Chiefs

Kansas City’s early-season tour of 2019 AFC division champions continues this weekend, with a game against the most recent winners of the AFC East. After beating the AFC South and AFC North champions in Week One and Week Three, the trifecta is within reach.

But the Patriots won’t be an easy opponent for the defending champions. They have Cam Newton. They have a potent defense. And they have Bill Belichick.

Belichick discussed the challenge his team faces with reporters on Tuesday.

“[A]nother impressive performance, like usual,” he said regarding Kansas City’s 34-20 win over Baltimore. “They were really dominant in the first half — basically scored [27] points there in a half of football on the road. That’s a good football team. They’re a very explosive group. They played the Ravens well defensively. So they’re a good football team, very talented, well-coached, played with a lot of poise and discipline, so we know we’re going to have our work cut out for us in Kansas City. It’s a championship football team and we’re going to have to play our best game and coach it.”

One of the big reasons for that is the ongoing presence of quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who can do it all for the Chiefs.

“I mean, all the superlatives that have been said about him, I’d just be repeating them all,” Belichick said of Mahomes.

The superlatives continue to be heaped on Mahomes based on last night’s performance, during which he extended his run against Lamar Jackson to 3-0.

Mahomes has never faced Cam Newton; the Panthers and Chiefs last played in 2016, the year before Mahomes was drafted. Regardless of the outcome, it has the potential to be the first of potentially two meetings this year between a pair of former league MVPs — just like last night’s game.

  1. Diguise blitzes to create a pick or two from Mahomes, get Cam to actually connect on short outside throws, and especially getting Edelman free will be the keys to the Patriots winning the game. I’m not sure if they can do it so early in the season though.

  2. Seems like the Chiefs were looking past the Chargers to the Baltimore game. Hopefully they play the same way against the Pats they did against the Chargers. I doubt it. I don’t think anyone overlooks the Pats.

  4. Bill Belichick has shown that he knows how to beat the Chiefs on several occasions in the past.

Whether he has the team in the early-2020 Patriots to pull it off remains to be seen, but I’m certainly not giving the game to the Chiefs yet. We’ll find out on Sunday.

  5. Coach is right. With that said, he’s the best at getting his team preped and ready to play. I like the Pats (team not Pat Mahomes) chances this week. I think it’s still KC’s game to lose though.

  6. Pats will have to play their best game in all ways, and Newton will have to throw like week 2 and run like he did in the other 2 games for the Pats to pull out a win. And the Pats running game has to be as effective as it was against the Raiders.

Newton certainly can’t give the throwing performance he did last weekend and lead the Pats to a win in KC. Has to be a complete game from him.

  7. I said it a few days ago, but the KC/Baltimore game would be a good indication on how this one will play out. I’m expecting Cam’s absolute best, and he has a coach that’s seen and done it all now. In fact, Reid/BB is probably a better rivalry than most want to admit. Each one a mastermind on opposite ends of the game. Can’t wait!

  8. That’s the focus every week and nobody is better at getting a team ready then belichick. The do your job cafe is open for business KC bbq is on the menu this week! 🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆

  9. you might see the 3-4 this weekend.

Spy in nickel with Adrian Phillips and Dugger as one of your MLBs. The spy is responsible for either mahomes or edwards helaire
into the flat. Use 3-4 D to set a hard edge and keep the edge to keep Mahomes inside.

Jones under on Hilll, McCourty over the top. Gilmore to remove Watkins and JC Jackson on Hardman. JoeJuan Williams on Kelce.

Pats run game should devastate a feeble run D for KC, with little fllm
to study with NE which means BB has saved stuff for this game.

    NE 34, KC 28

  10. Bill said they basically scored 31 points in the first half, meaning he’s including the missed XP and FG as their offensive production. It wasn’t his intention to say they basically scored 27 points. The use of clarification brackets ‘[27]’ make it less clear.

Pats have done this repeatedly through the years against mobile qbs like a Roethlisberger and have done it to Mahomes numerous times now.

You know, BB is the coach and all.

    lol

  12. Chiefs were really dominant last night. Wasn’t as close as the score. Reid is probably the best offensive HC, and Belichick is the top defensive HC (ever). Should be a good chess match.

  13. Let’s see what excuses you Patriot homers come up with after Patrick hands your bottom to you on a platter. You aren’t better than the Ravens and look what happened to them. We’ll talk again Sunday afternoon

  14. Translation: Bill will really have to work hard to cheat his way to a W. Chiefs aren’t afraid of the rats without Tammy.

Look at the Vikings fan chiming in on other teams losing. Thats about as funny as it gets!

  17. Grind the ball on the ground, short quick dump offs , screens, RPO’s…. long sustained drives ware down their D…. keep PM off the field as much as possible so he doesn’t get the offense in a rhythm….don’t want a score fest, that will work against the Pats…..pound the rock no matter what the 1st half & a good portion into the third quarter then open up the pass a bit to really tire them out on D

Umm, it’s early but NE is absolutely better than Balt right now and their D was better than them last year as well as the postseason games with Tenn showed.

NE currently leads the NFL in takeaways and has the best rushing attack as well, at least statistically.

Brady and a cheating Boger won’t be on the field this year. You homers got help from Goodell, but he best not pull that garbage on Sunday.

You might want to check out the newest defensive rankings even after last nights destruction by the Chiefs, the ravens are still the #1 ranked Defense followed by the Steelers then Patriots. As for you nonsense of the Chiefs having no run d, did you watch them last night? I guess not since they shut down the Ravens both passing and running. Sorry Brady left but Cam is good, but he isn’t even close to Patrick Mahomes. As far as that MVP the Ravens call a QB yeah he’s not good at being a QB.

  20. Keep Mahomes in the pocket and the prospects are good.

ok. reminds me of the “get to brady with the front 4” comments over the years. the GOAT coach might be able to have something for mahomes, but it sure was easier when the GOAT qb on the same sideline.

  21. The Patriots have a better defense than the Ravens, better coaching, a better QB than the Ravens. Let’s not the Chiefs escaped the Chargers starting a rookie QB.

Let’s look at the Patriots defensive DVOA ranks during the past decade:

    2019 – 1
    2018 – 19
    2017 – 31
    2016 – 16
    2015 – 11
    2014 – 12
    2013 – 20
    2012 – 17
    2011 – 30
    2010 – 23
    Avg. – 18

Now let’s look at their offensive ranks:

    2019 – 11
    2018 – 5
    2017 – 1
    2016 – 2
    2015 – 5
    2014 – 6
    2013 – 4
    2012 – 1
    2011 – 3
    2010 – 1
    Avg. – 4

So is Belichick the best defensive HC, or is it just Brady is the best QB and makes Belichick’s defenses look good because they faced fewer drives and never faced a short field?

  24. Well said gallopinghost! Delusional Patriot homers believe it’s Bill, lol. Kinda like a certain political figure, he serves up some tasty koolaid. NE has played 3 bottom feeders so far, watch what happens when they play a solid team. 7-9 this year, Cam will be pouting soon and Bill, don’t forget to save those timeouts, I think the league gives you a free tv if you save them up and don’t use them during the game.

  25. @didnthearwhat: “delusional” is when you’re in denial that Bill Belichick is the best head coach the NFL has ever seen. There literally is no comparison between him and Andy Reid, who has barely won anything yet after decades of coaching in the NFL.

Also, you might want to Google “Andy Reid” if you really want to joke about how not to manage timeouts – the guy literally made a career out of poor clock management.

    =======
That LA Charger defense is the real deal. The 2nd toughest defense which Mahomes and his offense have gone up against – I’m saying Spagnuolo’s defense is the toughest and the Patriots are gonna get a wake up call in Kansas City this Sunday.

Most explosive offense against the defense that’s been throttling teams (including your team last year) since week eleven of 2019.

Talk strong, but one half of the equation of the dynasty has fled to Tompa Bay. You’re no longer invincible.

Cam Newton is a taller, stronger, older & slower Lamar Jackson. He’s a major step down from Tom in talent, leadership and football IQ.

Chiefs by 3 scores and the game will never be in doubt.
