Referees’ union complains to league office about John Harbaugh lowering his mask

USA Today

Ravens coach John Harbaugh lowered his mask and got in the face of an official when complaining about a penalty on Monday night, and the NFL Referees Association is not happy about it.

NFLRA Executive Director Scott Green complained about the incident to NFL Executive Vice President of Football Operations Troy Vincent, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.

Harbaugh had his neck gaiter pulled below his chin when he was yelling at an official, getting within inches of the official’s face. The NFL has said that all coaches must wear masks at all times, although only some coaches who have violated that rule have been fined. The league has never explained why some coaches have been fined and some have not.

Asked about the incident this week, Harbaugh claimed it is unrealistic to expect coaches to keep their masks on for the entire game.

  1. Standing proud, grenades going off on the battlefield, some folks won’t take the threat seriously until they get a belly full of shrapnel.
Would that others act responsibly, we’d do much better.

  2. Ole Harbawl. Imagine him getting a complaint about his incessant whining over every call that goes against him. Maybe he should use that energy on teaching their #1 running back how to throw a football.

  3. Sure he may be right and its unrealistic to have a mask on at all time but its not unrealistic to have it up when you go tall/yell at someone. I work in a warehouse with moving conveyor belts as well as other machinery on at all times and we can still communicate thru masks. In this situation specifically it’s not like Harbaugh was trying to not be heard by others inky 1 person either so there was no reason to pull his mask doen.

  4. Why are coaches having such a hard time with this? As a healthcare worker in a hospital, I have no problem wearing one for 8 hours a day and communicating with other people with it on.

  5. I’ve seen a ref when they’re grouped together discussing a penalty pull down his mask…Just sayin’

  6. Harbaugh totally should have been ejected for that. People have been arrested for assault for doing similar things.

I’ll say the difference is elements. Being indoors your in ac even if moving quickly. Being outside in the elements is different altogether. When your outside or in the heat as you start to sweat, depending on the mask I’m sure but im just going off what I’ve used, the masks start to weigh down and your trying to breathe thru essentially a lightly used sweat rag. The hours I’m in an office I dont have that happen and the mask doesnt even look used at the end but the hours I’m in a warehouse or outside its completely different and doesnt become harder to deal with. That being said you learn how to deal with it.

  8. Why do the refs take off their masks to announce penalties? It’s not like microphones suddenly stop working because they have a mask on.

  9. The Harbaugh brothers have always been bullies. I think their hero must have been Bobby Knight, the former basketball coach at Indiana, who was the biggest bully ever in sports. He treated everyone like garbage, including his own players.
The only way to deal with guys like the Harbaughs is suspend them because they make too much money for fines to bother them.

  10. If I can wear a mask thoughout an entire 8 hour surgery that cry baby can wear it when yelling at a ref

  11. pulling it down to yell at someone is a narcissistic faux dominance display. Toughen up or lose all your money, Harbs.

  12. Harbaugh should be suspended without pay for the rest of the season. He knowingly and willingly put the ref’s life at risk because he was mad. That’s crazy behavior, and the ref’s union shouldn’t have to ask for action. This is on Roger Goodell. I’m a huge fan of Jim and John Harbaugh, and their parents. I love those people. But this was crazy behavior. No excuse.

Not saying it’s not true, but it’s a lame excuse for him. Firefighters wear full suites in 100+ degrees with masks, soldiers where outfits and masks etc in hot weather … that are more uncomfortable for a much longer period of time. Asking someone to cover up for a few hrs while standing on the sidelines is not hardship.

  14. Fines or the nfl doesn’t care, they need to put an end to simple preventable things like coaches taking off their masks.

  15. A fine? A suspension? The loss of a draft pick? All of the above? Harbaugh has a history of breaking NFL rules, so it should be at least what other coaches have received.

There are thousands if not millions of people in manufacturing and the trades that routinely wear masks that are a lot less comfortable than what we’re being asked to wear for COVID. The whole thing of people complaining about having to wear a mask just strikes me as a bunch of childish, entitled whining.

  17. The refs and league can simply enforce the mask rule in a way that does not penalize the team but does make their life more difficult: kick the coach off the field and must move to a skybox if he wants to participate in the game.

I think this week has shown testing alone guarantees nothing.

  18. They should ban him from the sidelines for 1 or 2 games. Or they should have the uniform monitor check the sidelines for mask compliance and suspend any offenders for the next game. I will bet Harbaugh will somehow “find a way” then.

  19. The Harbaugh brothers have always been bullies. I think their hero must have been Bobby Knight, the former basketball coach at Indiana, who was the biggest bully ever in sports. He treated everyone like garbage, including his own players.

    _____

Maybe Jim, but John is class act and his players enjoy playing for him. They’ll respect him more after his 2nd superbowl this year.

  20. It’s not ‘realistic’?
It’s time for a reality check as well as a check to the league with Harbaugh’s signature on it.

John is always screaming at officials, just like his brother did. Is he buying them all tickets to the Super Bowl this year? Because that’s the only way they’re going.

  22. I work 12 hour shifts in the medical field, from 730-1 I wear a mask (goggles too)… 2-8 I also wear a mask(goggles too)… so sorry it’s unrealistic to wear a mask for football half, off at half time… and back on for the second half! Pretty sure your making WAYYYYY more than I do too!

  23. Baltimore winning a 2nd Super Bowl this year? That’s priceless. You’re running back has already proven he cannot beat the best QB in the league.

  24. But the shields have been proven ineffective at containing it,, so they ought not to be considered sufficient.

  25. Yet somehow, medical people can keep masks on for several hours during long surgeries. Retail workers can keep masks on for 2,4, and 8 hour shifts (with a few breaks and lunch) at retail stores. But the big, tough football coach just can’t do it.

  26. The league needs to make an example of this guy in order to send the message that the rules aren’t optional. If they don’t, they’re sending the message that the rules are really only suggestions and others will follow his lead.

    Coach lowering his mask= bad
22 players on the field with no mask= good
    WTF?

Simply put, the NFLPA agreed to rules, one of them was that the coaches and support staff would wear a mask at all times. Period. Whatever crap you’re peddling doesn’t matter. The coaches have a legal obligation to wear a mask.

Will never happen. The Ravens have been caught cheating 3 times in 2 years here recently and Goodell barely fined the team.

Baltimore is a team that controls Goodell. Remember the Ray Rice and Suggs domestic cover ups?

Bill Burr also has a free cruise ride and a $100 Walmart gift card awariting these kinds of people.

The thinning of the Trumpy herd is overdue.

  30. How about the referee’s union look at the play in question? The tripping call was bogus. There was nothing there. How about the union and the league holding their officials accountable?
