Al Riveron: Will Fuller didn’t maintain control of the football

USA TODAY Sports

The Texans got as close as the Minnesota 5-yard line to have a chance at tying the Vikings. They needed a touchdown and a two-point conversion for a hope of sending it into overtime.

The Texans briefly thought they had the touchdown part of the equation on fourth down with 1:12 left.

Officials ruled Will Fuller‘s catch a touchdown, but after reviewing it, the league’s supervisor of officials decided Fuller didn’t maintain possession as the ball touched the ground as the Texans receiver went to the ground.

Since it was fourth down, the Vikings took over and ended the game with two kneel downs in victory formation. Minnesota won 31-23 in a battle of winless teams.

Al Riveron explained his decision in a pool report as well as on Twitter.

“The ruling on the field was that of a touchdown,” the NFL’s supervisor of officials said. “When we looked at it, the receiver is going to the ground. And if he is ruled as going to the ground, he must maintain control of the football after hitting the ground. And what he does is, the minute the football touches the ground, he loses control of the football. He does not maintain control. Therefore, we overturned it to an incomplete pass.”

  1. But all a running back has to do is break the plane and if they lose possesion its counted as a td.

That was a texan td. Awful call.

It was a catch not a running play. You have to maintain catch to the ground. Surprise Surprise another ignorant packer fan that does not understand the rules.

  3. Well Al Riveron is wrong and the NFL owes the Houston Texans an apology. Vikings have to cheat to win & Harrison Smith deserves a Suspension for that dirty hit. About time he got Ejected, he’s been a dirty player his entire Career.

  4. I really think the Texans might be almost as bad as the jets. Maybe the jets will hire billy doh’ Bryan as their next coach.

  5. It’s a stupid rule.knee down possession in the end zone it should not matter what happens after. It was the correct interpretation of a abomination of a rule of what a catch is these days. Too many lawyers writing rules.

  6. Two terrible teams. One of them had to win. It’s not like anyone is going to look back at that play and say, “If not for that call….”.

Don’t worry the Pack will definitely beat Atlanta, the Pack are going 19-0, they have the most complete team in Football.

Because that Stadium should never have been built. They should have moved to LA where they belong instead of the Rams, all the Vikings are doing are encroaching on Packers territory.

With all the injuries the Packers have dunno how you think you have a complete team taking the field tomorrow night. That so called complete team hasn’t won on the west coast since 2016. With the way Seattle is playing looks like that won’t happen this year either😝😝😝😝😝😝😝😝😝😝😝😝
