Jon Gruden tests the league’s patience on mask wearing, again

Getty Images

After Week One, the NFL made it clear that coaches who fail to properly and consistently wear face coverings during games would be subject to potential “accountability measures.” After Week Two, Raiders coach Jon Gruden and four other coaches each received $100,000 fines, with their teams separately fined $250,000 each.

After Week Three, the league reiterated the requirement that coaches and other sideline personnel must wear mask coverings at all times. This time, the league specifically mentioned suspensions and/or lost draft picks as the potential “or else.” In Week Four, Gruden has once again invited an “or else” moment.

Gruden failed to consistently pull his mask up over his chin (whatever it was that he wore last week looked more like a loincloth), and now the question becomes whether the NFL will do anything about it.

Frankly, Gruden should be concerned. Given the issues that have emerged over the past week, it’s even more important that everyone comply with the protocols. Throw in the fact that a group of Gruden’s players (including starting quarterback Derek Carr) committed a cartoonish breach of off-duty restrictions last Monday (which is a reflection on Gruden’s messaging to his players), and it’s possible that the NFL will make the kind of example out of Gruden that will scare everyone else in the league straight.

  1. Greg Williams flaunts the rule for JETS also. But we know the league will never take action against the JETS!

  2. Gruden is going with the South Park chin diaper.

They’re gonna up his fine and threaten a suspension.

  3. Great leadership by Gruden. No wonder he is an inspiration to his players. Gruden is a selfish loser and if he catches Covid, few will cry.

  4. It’s more convenient to wear a face shield. That’s what more of the coaches should be wearing. It’s a little bit more comfortable, and the coaches won’t get fined for using them.

  5. I wonder if there is going to be a report on here about the NBC broadcast joking about having to wear masks and neither broadcaster having the mask pulled up over the nose. This site has been quick to point these things out and that’s awfully hypocritical when its owned by nbc.

Goodell will do nothing. It’s not the Patriots.

LOL. Never have I known someone to cry as much as you do. Lol.

  7. Take away some draft picks! That’ll send a crystal picture that the NFL is joking around.

  8. Should not be that difficult to stop. Not wearing your mask? … Toss the flag – “Mask Violation” … 15 yard penalty.

    Each and every time.

    Problem solved.

  9. So where are the Raiders partying tonight? Will there be live music and tons of Covid babes?

LOL Like suspending Jets coaches or taking away draft picks they are going to waste anyway would be punishment for the JETS…

Except I am right so often, so really, who is doing the complaining? Maybe Goodell or Trump shod show leadership and make normal, rational decisions, so no one has to point out how they constantly move the goalposts.

Keep in mind, this is on the heels of the Raiders being “punished” for 50k (lol) for another Covid protocol violation.

If BB did what the Raiders are doing, what on earth would the public and owners be demanding as punishment to NE?

BB messes with Manboobs and Woody Johnson in Sept 2007, a first rd pick and all hell breaks loose.

All Pats fans want is honesty and fairness. Always go the source. The source is Goodell’s pathetic and obviously inconsistent rules and punishments.

Gruden had his mask pulled down constantly again, on the heels of their other violations. Talk to Oaklanf and talk to pathetic Goodell who can’t show any consistency or fairness.

  12. When will the Refs give each team fair treatment? Because until they do we will continue to have a corrupt league!

  13. Hey I’m here from 1985! How cool is 2020? Really, you have to wear a mask all day because there’s a light cold going around? Please dear god I hope I packed up enough plutonium to get back to saner times.

I think it would take one 3rd and 2 turned into a 3rd and 17 in the 4th quarter to fix compliance.

  15. It just makes me laugh OUT LOUD when a fan of the Patriots, the worst cheating team in the history of the NFL, complains about other teams “cheating”.

Woody Johnson hired Goodell. This is why the Jets never get a real punishment when caught, like tampering, which they’ve done on 3 separate occasions to NE.

This is how I can tell nothing will happen to the protected teams.

What about the 22 players on the field standing shoulder to shoulder with each other and have no mask? Yeah, the NFL and you should focus on the coaches. They are the only ones that can catch and spread COVID during a game.

  18. With TN and Cam Newton the league has to come down on him. He’ll get the message that he needs to wear that ‘loin cloth’, even if he did get it at Thunder from Down Under!

  19. The only way get through Gruden’s fat head is a million dollar fine and double it for every time after that. He’s a hard head.

  20. Ban the coach from the sidelines for one qurater.
Repeat offender – half the game.
Bump it up if they continue.

  21. Fine $150k, 1 game suspension (including the work week), team fine $250K. That would tighten up everyone. I’m not a fan of taking draft picks until the suspension doesn’t get the offender’s attention.

  22. It’s interesting that so many commentators suggest penalties, fines , suspensions, draft picks for an issue that is not in the traditional NFL rule book and complain that the refs are already far too involved in the outcome of games. NFL and fans are getting to a point of not caring about football but rather look for any percieved violation. Enjoy the game.

Why are the Pats one of the only teams who don’t even commit a real violation, to have picks stolen?

It’s just a strange thing. Rozelle didn’t do it, Tagliabue barely did it and he only dealt Denver a 3rd pick for 3 years of cap cheating.

If you commit a particular violation, the punishment should be the same.

  24. Gruden is a punk to endanger those he comes in contact with after blatantlty putting himself at risk and ignoring state, county, and NFL rules, laws and regs. Im sure he thinks it’s Chucky Cool to do such. It’s not. Book him Dano and throw away the key.

  25. Fine that jerk a year’s pay. Then let’s hear him say “Now HERE’S a guy who just doesn’t get it…”

In the Jet’s case to suspend their coach would benefit them and send the wrong message. So the league can more effectively punish them by leaving them alone.

Fine him into submission. Pulling the mask down to communicate is stupid.

    >>> I agree. He is being an idiot and he had covid! 🙄

Sean Payton had it too and for the first 2 weeks did not wear a mask.

Gruden, Pete Carroll and a few other coaches in the NFL and college pull the mask down to talk. I guess they do not understand that it is most important to have the mask covering your mouth when you talk? 🙄 The refs pulled them down too in one of the games in week 2 when they gathered around to discuss a call.

If the masks are too hard to understand how to wear properly, get a face shield. It is not that hard.

  28. As a HC, Gruden is the same kind of below-average HC and obnoxious moron that Rex Ryan and Hue Jackson were. Unfortunately for the Raiders the owner has also given Gruden power to control the draft and personnel and the results on the field speaks for itself. And now this clown further embarrasses the Raiders franchise by deliberately trivializing an infectious disease.

Forfeiting draft choices would do it.

    ============

I’m not sure if that would be a deterrent for Gruden since he has a track record of striking out on most of his draft picks anyway.

It must get really cold wearing a tinfoil hat in Buffalo during winter .

  31. Even when Gruden is ‘wearing’ his mask, 80% of the time you can still see his nostrils peeking out… No surprise, half the Raiders sideline also have their masks down half the time.

That’s a nice deflection and it’s usually what people do when they justify why they broke a rule. The OP made a disgusting statement to say about someone but behind that is the coach(just like a manager/boss at a job) are an example to their players(workers). Whether you agree with how the rules are setup are immaterial after you agree to abide by them. When a boss/manager or in this case a coacb disregards a safety procedure then as a worker you know there will be little to no repercussions when you disregard them…if you teach your kid to drive and the speed limit is 40 but you go 70 how serious are they going to take that speed limit? But if your going 40 and a cop is in pursuit of someone and hes going 70 are you going to teach them the law and that its allowed? Or are you going to tell them ok you can go 70 since they are? It’s not that difficult

  34. The league needs to lay out what the escalating penalties will be. If they just make it up as they go, they run the risk of losing a lawsuit later. But, at some point, it needs to include suspension for continuing to ignore it. And, that suspension needs to include no access to the team all week, not just not standing on the sideline on Sunday (or whatever day they play).

  35. Gruden became out of vogue many years ago.he should be one of the nfl coaches that are concerned for their job.this Chuckie lookalike should be in a tv booth and not on an nfl sideline.

  36. Either issue suspensions or shut up about it. Seriously. Get serious or get out. It’s been proven a million times that fines don’t affect behavior of anyone in the NFL.

  37. I agree, make any intentional / eggregious mask violation a dead ball penalty – unsportsmanlike activity/behavior, 15 yard penalty.

Make it if you get 2 in a game, you get ejected from game and a loss of game check.

  38. Very equal teams. Raiders were more banged up, and the difference was the late turnover. If they ever get healthy…should be a playoff run. They pretty much score on every drive not stalled out by a penalty.

  39. Why not just be transparent? Send a memo stating that if a coach does not wear a mask for the entire game the file and penalty will be ________.
