NFL already has visited New England to investigate potential protocol breaches

After the Titans’ outbreak began, it took the league several days to show up to investigate whether the team followed all applicable COVID-19 protocols. With only one positive in New England, the league moved much more quickly.

Per a league source, the NFL promptly launched an investigation into whether the Patriots complied with all relevant protocols, after news of quarterback Cam Newton‘s positive test emerged.

There hadn’t even been (and still hasn’t been) a second positive in New England. Which makes it a bit strange, to say the least, that the NFL moved so quickly.

It’s unclear whether the NFL also has launched an investigation in Kansas City regarding its single positive test, generated by practice-squad quarterback Jordan Ta’amu.

The situation suggests that the league doesn’t plan to screw around when it comes to looking for ways to place blame on teams that have outbreaks. Although it makes more sense to investigate all teams with or without outbreaks, the league seems to be focused on a more reactive approach, looking for violations only after positive tests happen — even if the violations didn’t necessarily caught the positive tests.

  1. MA had 700 new cases yesterday. The state was down to 52 icu cases weeks ago. Now 217 in the icu for MA.

The NFL might want to get a reality check. The second phase of the pandemic is hitting hard.

  2. I’ll be surprised if no one else tests positive tomorrow. They should really think about delaying this game. The Titans had no cases one day. Then, they had several cases the day after.

  3. The situation suggests that the league treats teams differently depending on whether or not their head coach made the commissioner’s Dad sad 20 years ago.

    If you cheat, you cheat.

Yeah, their goal from the start was to find a way to get Hoyer to start against KC. Lol. If that’s cheating they are doing it wrong.

If they have to delay playing games when one player has tested positive for fear of others having been exposed and potential spreading of the virus to other teams, then they might as well pack it in now. It was always going to be the case that individuals would contract covid 19 given they all go home after work and see their families, etc.

I don’t see how 1 player contracting it would indicate any protocols were violated. If anything it shows they were followed.

  6. Yeah just what the Pats wanted….lose Cam just before a huge game by breaking the league protocol …… that’s just BRILLIANT investigative actions by the league….. right up there with Ted Wells work…..why am I NOT surprised the league would take this approach….just AMAZING!!!

  7. All of the players & coaches go home each & every night. There’s the distinct possibility someone picks it up from outside & brings it into the facility. The Patriots didn’t even have a team outbreak. Is the NFL going to trace Newtons whereabouts for every minute that he’s on his own time?
We know Newton didn’t bring his family to New England. Did he go somewhere and do something that he shouldn’t have?

  8. If the Chiefs or Patriots have a bunch of positive tests after the league forces them to play the game tonight then Goodell should be fired immediately.

    ,…………………………………..

Bet they weren’t “forced” to play tonight, players want to play the game and their union is who refused the bubble to keep them safe. So who is taking this too lightly, the players or the league??

  10. Seems pretty irresponsable to play this game tonight. Cam was positive Friday, any player or coach he was exposed to could test negative this morning and positive after the game. There should be a 10 day buffer in there to prevent spread.

  11. Most of the posts to this thread seem to understand that the NFL not only isn’t quarantined in a bubble they have significant interactions outside team and league controlled environments. Of course some guys will get covid and that puts teammates, coaches and staff at risk if there’s positive case.

I look askance at posts wanting to blame the players as a whole and the Union because they didn’t go into a bubble like the NBA. The logistics are completely different for NFL teams. Their team rosters and staff are a multiple of at least ten of NBA teams. The greedy player mantra is old and obtuse. Players work hard and play hard. The NFL players, not coaches and certainly not owners, are a true meritocracy.

Every day that a player goes out on the field they take a risk, now more than ever.
