Blown call costs Patriots’ defense a turnover

The Patriots’ defense forced a Patrick Mahomes turnover late in the second quarter tonight, but the officials blew the call.

On a third down, New England’s Chase Winovich hit Patrick Mahomes and the ball came out and was caught in the air by New England’s Shilique Calhoun. It wasn’t immediately clear whether Mahomes was throwing a forward pass or had the ball knocked out for a fumble, but it didn’t matter: Calhoun had grabbed the ball out of the air and was running down the field.

But then the officials blew the play dead. They ruled Mahomes’ forward progress had been stopped and he was in the grasp for a sack. That was a bad call; Mahomes was still moving forward and trying to escape Winovich’s grasp when the ball came out.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick was furious at the bad call and began screaming at the officials, but Chiefs coach Andy Reid wisely got the punt team on the field quickly, before Belichick could challenge, and punted on the next play.

The Patriots got the ball back at their own 20-yard line, but if the play had been called correctly, Calhoun’s return would have given New England the ball in Chiefs territory. It was a big miss by the officials, and Belichick was right to be angry.

  1. Meh, Hoyer would probably just realize that time was going to expire and take a sack… Too funny!

  2. Seriously, this play was hilarious strictly because Patriots fans are THE biggest complainers even tho they have got every call for the last 20 years!

Didn’t matter ….Hoyer is out there & he stinks BAD!!!!

Maybe — but at the half it’s only 6 – 3, so the Chiefs aren’t exactly blowing the Pats out, either.

  4. Just like last year Chiefs get bailed out by the refs. Hell this year alone 3 picks of Mahomes got overturned by sketchy refs.

  5. Can’t challenge the call of forward progress stopped, so either you misinterpreted Reid or Reid doesn’t know the rules.

  6. Al Riveron is incompetent and should be stripped of his duties of overseeing and reviewing replays.
He has proven several times in this season alone, that he sees things different than 99.99% of the population.
An ask the audience vote like in Who Wants to be a Millionaire would be a more reliable way of deciding penalties than this Goon

  7. Hoyer has single handedly given this game away. Why not Stidham to start? Was it sentimental reasons to let Hoyer give it away?

  8. These refs clearly have money on the Chiefs winning this game. That’s three BS calls in a row at this time. Good lord…

  9. So this Stidham is the guy that NE fans had already elected to the Hall of Fame?

    Not seeing it.

  10. Pats yet again dominate the Chiefs and Goodell won again.

    Rinse and repeat.

If that game is played without cheating, NE wins going away. NEs D is outstanding.

  11. What does anything before have to do with the play today? Why are people bringing up a player from TWENTY YEARS AGO. Either way, NE was terrible today on offense, so it does not matter but seriously guys it is time to stop crying. I am Pats fan and the offense outside of Harris was terrible today and they would not have won if this call when their way but it is time to move on from past calls

  12. Mahomes getting the benefit of an atrocious late hit call was a nice capper too. He was not good tonight. 2 TD “passes” and should have had 3 picks.

  13. Don’t worry they fix that call pronto with the predictable make up call by taking away the
Tyranne Mathieu Interception with that bad pass Interference call.

  14. New England and Belicheck have never benefited from an obvious blown call/zebra judgement call?

I bet the Raiders and their fans would like a word.

  15. The Patriots were the beneficiary last week against the Raiders when Josh Jacobs recovered his own fumble, yet the refs gave the Pats the ball. Sometimes you get helped by the refs and sometimes you get hurt.

  16. Bad call goes against Patriots! Mark this down in history. Welcome to the real world a Pats fans. Your time is done.
Now your over-40 Bandwagon fans can go back to rooting for the teams they liked prior to the “Jordan Rules” of football were written for the Pats.
Like Barry Bonds said in 1992, “It’s Over!”

The funny and ironic thing about that comment is that this thread is mostly just Pats haters crying about Pats fans. Except for the rebranded TLP6 Pats fans are fine with that game. Everyone knew they were just shooting down there the day of the game with a depleted team to take the L against a completely for real Chiefs team that would have been tough to beat even full strength. The QB situation wasn’t even the biggest concern, the reshuffled line was what should have been their undoing. That they were competitive at all and that it stayed close until late was actually a pleasant surprise. If anything it was a moral victory except moral victories are too empty to enjoy. So we just live in peace neither happy or sad. But if you are having a giddy morning thats great. The world can always use more happiness.

And people thought the refs favored Brady? Mahomes is the new untouchable.
    ————

Because they did for 20 years. Mahomes is taking those reins now.

    Hmmmm, they didn’t.

  22. Happened last year against the Chiefs too, with officials not calling N’Keal Harry’s touchdown when he stayed in bounds and scored. That game would have been tied on that play alone. Crazy why all plays can’t be considered reviewable.

  23. All three teams, the Pats, the Chiefs and the Officials… all had a bad game last night. Obviously the better team won but it would have been fun to see what could have been if a few critical calls were made correctly.

  24. Partially makes up for that blown Sack Fumble call by the Notorious Jeffy T a few years ago in the playoffs.

  25. A lot of people are apparently okay with bad officiating as long as it goes against a team they dislike. They don’t realize that accepting bad/missed calls means they are going to happen to their team, too.

Guess you’ve missed alot over the last 20 years. Just in last years KC-Pats game NKeal Harry’s TD was wrongly called back, causing the Pats to drop in the playoff standings
