Aaron Rodgers: Down years for me a lot of times are career years for others

Aaron Rodgers has not won the league’s MVP award since 2014. He is a candidate through four games this season.

Rodgers, 36, is having one of his best seasons in completing 70.5 percent of his passes for 1,214 passing yards, 13 touchdowns and no interceptions.

The Packers trade up in the first round to select Jordan Love invited questions about Rodgers’ future. He has answered: He’s back, even though he never went anywhere.

“Every team is different. Every year is different,” Rodgers told Pat McAfee on SiriusXM’s Mad Dog Sports Radio. “Circumstances in any year which allow you to have more success, or make it more difficult for success, just kind of depends on the situation. It does help being the second year, for sure. I feel a lot more comfortable. But, you know, I sometimes laugh when people talk about down years for me because a lot of times down years for me are career years for most quarterbacks.”

He’s not wrong.

Rodgers passed for 4,002 yards with 26 touchdowns and four interceptions last season in leading the Packers to a 13-3 record. The analytics experts, though, pointed to his throwaways and his Expected Points Added (EPA) per play.

This season, Rodgers is on pace for 4,856 yards and 52 touchdowns. His career-best season was 2011 when he passed for 4,643 yards and 45 touchdowns.

  1. in 2010 he threw for 3900 yards and 28 touchdowns. In 2015 he threw for 3800 yards. Yeah sure those are pretty good numbers overall and a down year by his standards but that would be a career year?? for who, Trubisky and Foles? Haskins?? Definitely not most quarterbacks.

  2. Hopefully some day before I die I’ll get to witness a Bears QB having an Aaron Rodgers down year

  3. Show me the lie… at least he backs up his boasting with actually HoF play. Unlike a purple QB across the border… talks a great game… plays not so great unless its garbage time.

  4. Just gotta laugh. As the previous comments all point out, for all that talent, he sure still has that chip on his shoulder. Then again maybe, like others, thats what drives him.

  5. Well Aaron can say that and get away with it. Let’s see him versus a decent pass rush before we place him ahead of RUSS in the MVP race.

  6. I wonder if Aaron, on a zoom call, is one of those people who watch their own image instead of looking at who they are talking to…

  7. It is absolutely true for any other team in the NFC North anyway……….
    Thinking Aaron is a little upset with “experts” writing him off after the first year in a new system when he still put up better numbers than 70% of the other QBs in the league.Other than TB12 he is the best QB of this generation

  8. He said it on Pat McAfee. Perhaps watch how it is was said before trying to say he isn’t humble.

  9. Extremely arrogant comment. Unfortunately for him he doesn’t play fantasy football. Lack of post season success means he’s not in the same conversation with Brady and Montana.

  10. Always enjoyed watching him play and I certainly admire his ability. It’s not like we’re going to have a beer together so I’ll leave the personality stuff to the people around him to deal with.

  11. I remember watching him on draft night, how humiliating he looked, when teams were passing on him until Greenbay with the 20something pick. Maybe some of his attitude still comes from that.

  12. Ah, yes, nothing like a little snippet of pure arrogance to endear you to the fans. No wonder Olivia Munn dumped his butt,

  13. Considering his multiple trips to the Super Bowl, he’s got a point.

    ——-

    Multiple = 1 ?

  14. 2015, 2017-2019 were all decling years for Rodgers. I know dopey Packer fans put their head in the sand about it but now Rodgers is cherry picking stats about himself? yikes. He needs to keep the lights on more often.

    Oh boy. He’s obviously talking about Trubisky and Cousins.

    ——————————————

    Weird, Cousins has more yards, a higher completion percentage and the same amount of wins over the past 5 full seasons.
    His statement is more hyperbole than the truth

  16. Meh, so much hubaloo about one sentence.

    I, for one would rather have my QB be a little more like Jordan, Ali, and Lebron than to be like Brian Bosworth, Matt Hasselbeck, or Anthony Smith.

    It ain’t smack talk if you can back it up.

  17. He continues to give reasons to dislike him! Nothing like breaking your own arm to pat yourself on the back!

  18. He’s on fire and he’s right. Just cause he’s a Packer player doesn’t mean that I can’t respect his game. They needed a QB in the first round of this year’s draft like I need another chin.

  19. How insecure can you be? what all-time great athletes say stuff like that, especially at this age? Learn some class Rodgers…

  20. He is right. Possibly best pure thrower of a football ever. His TD to Int ratio is phenomenal. He makes no name receivers stars. They get big money, go elsewhere, and aren’t heard from again.

  21. Strangely enough, 2014 was also the last time the Packers Offensive line was called for holding when Erin dropped back to pass.

    RIP EVH.YOU influenced more people in 5 notes than this clown could influence in 5 years

  22. Aaron measures his success in personal stats. Tom Brady measures his success in Championships.

    Any questions?

  23. Right now, I’m wondering if Rodgers or Wilson will end up with better careers.
    It will probably come down to number of Rings…
    Both are currently in my top12 QBs of all time.

    I have a difficult time grading QBs in different eras, but in my mind those 2 share the same era.
    Higher than Big Ben, but behind Brees? Splitting hairs…

  24. I think Aaron was just trolling journeyman hacks from losing football teams like Kirk Cousins.

    It’s funny when people use buzz words like that but back nothing up or clarify. If by pure thrower you mean arm strength- obviously not, quick release- no Marino has him, throwing motion-nope Montana. Rodgers is amazing no doubt but even with your vaguely worded statement it doesnt hold up.

  26. At least he doesn’t own the trademark “You Vike that?”
    ——-
    He does pretend to wear a ‘championship’ belt though. Sorta lame.

    Dudes Uber talented, no denying that. But it’s no wonder his own family doesn’t talk to him. Oh well, he isn’t at my Thanksgiving table but instead slinging a football on national tv, kudos to him

  27. Aaron Rodgers is 117-60-1 for his career, and 17-3 with his current coach. Look how bad the Cowboys are playing under Mike McCarthy. I’d guess Rodgers would have at least a couple more super bowl titles if he had a competent coach for most of his career. But still, 117-60. That’s the only stat that matters.

  28. All these people wanting professional athletes to feign humility. You know how confident you have to be to even think of going pro as an athlete? Get over yourselves

  29. “Well Aaron can say that and get away with it. Let’s see him versus a decent pass rush before we place him ahead of RUSS in the MVP race.’

    Has Seattle even faced a decent defense, outside of maybe NE?

  30. And if they didn’t draft that love guy, he would have had one of those other quarterback career years…

    Mirror mirror on the wall, who’s the most conceded QB of them all?

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Kirk Cousins. For his entire career, he conceded whenever a defender got near him.
  32. What a jerk.
    He’s not even top 10 in QB wins or QB winning percentage all time.
    Brady, Montana, Manning, Elway, Roethlisberger, Favre, Marino, Brees all have better records.
    All-time winning percentages (through 2019):
    Otto Graham 78 0.788
    Tom Brady 324 0.769
    Daryle Lamonica 97 0.753
    Roger Staubach 131 0.733
    Joe Montana 187 0.711
    Russell Wilson 143 0.668
  33. Rogers just showed up on the injury report, hurt shoulder during interview. Patting himself on the back.
  34. He’s such a humble, conceited, egotistical creep. He’s a great QB and a miserable human being…
  35. LOL. Give me a break … all the disgust and attacks on Rodgers is petty. I don’t like him, how could he be so arrogant – what do you expect him to say? He walks the walk and talks the talk. Good for him!
  36. watch the entire interview. I know most people here won’t get his humor but the guy does what he does better than anyone. and that includes playing QB. Thanks Aaron. You are a maestro. You could take the Mayberry marching band and make them sound like a symphony. Nobody does it better. Nobody has ever done it better.
    Rodgers will always be the “discount double choke” guy…much more fitting than Cousins lame thing…
  38. There is no doubt, he is top five best regular season qb’s out there. Comparable to Drew Brees on the high side and a little less clutch than Russell Wilson on the low side. As far as taking a team all of the way he’s done it once. He’s no Brady,Peyton,Montana and probably Mahomes.
  39. Love ya, man.
    But PLEASE, just put a cork in it, and keep winning.
    THAT is the best revenge you can get.
  40. i see A-rod has a VERY high opinion of A-rod. Love it when players are humble. 🙄🙄🙄🙄
  41. He is right. Possibly best pure thrower of a football ever. His TD to Int ratio is phenomenal. He makes no name receivers stars. They get big money, go elsewhere, and aren’t heard from again.
    =====
    Jennings would have remained productive in GB, his attitude undid him as much as ability
    Jordy was all used up, and not far removed from a serious knee injury
    Cobb was absurdly overrated, and just couldn’t get/stay healthy
    These aren’t no names, all of them were 2nd round picks
    Davante Adams.. also a #2
    James Jones.. Jermichael Finley.. #3s.. Driver was a hold-over from the Wolf Regime.
    They invested heavily in targets for Rodgers.
    No. He is not.
    And if he was, he’d be wrong, at least in terms of Cousins.
  44. He’s right and why should he be humble? He’s one of the all-time best. None of you reading this including me are the all-time best at anything.
    He reaggravated the old injury.
  46. How many posters who complain and considers AR arrogant wouldnt just love to have this arrogant future Hall Of Fame QB running their own team.if he said what he said as your qb would you still say it,dont think so you would just point to the stats.its his belief in his own ability that make him great.
