Cam Newton is asymptomatic, could play Sunday if he tests negative twice

Getty Images

Patriots quarterback Cam Newton may end up missing only one game after testing positive for COVID-19.

Newton has been asymptomatic, according to multiple reports. That means if he tests negative for COVID-19 twice, and those two tests are at least 24 hours apart, league rules would permit him to return for Sunday’s game against the Broncos.

PFT has been told that the Patriots still hold out hope that Newton could return this week.

The Patriots’ offense struggled without Newton in Monday night’s loss to the Chiefs. Brian Hoyer started and was benched for Jarrett Stidham, and it’s currently unclear which one of them would start if Newton can’t go against the Broncos.

But the Patriots may not have to make that decision, as Newton’s absence may be a short one.

  1. After seeing both Stidham and Hoyer this is some great news. BB should also consider fining a better backup now.

  2. After watching his two backups last night Newton’s MVP candidacy got a real boost. Hoyer was bad and then they put Stidham in and he was so awful it left you wondering if they’d have to go to the Wildcat.

  3. Was a good game to watch on Monday night….no newton or horrible announcers that took up where booger left off with to much yacking…

  4. Good news for the Pats for sure. However, while Hoyer did not play well, you can not fault Stidham for his play. He was likely running the KC offense all week on scout team and he found out he was backing up Hoyer in the 11th hour….give the kid a break!

  5. The QB play was lousy, Edelman sucked and the D dropped a bunch of interceptions. They looked tired and out of it.

  6. “Lol Newton has been really good, but he’s not in the MVP convo”
    ______________

Tongue in cheek about MVP but when your backups have QB ratings in the 50s (Hoyer) and 30s (Stidham) it certainly gives Cam some major job security. And that’s in an offense where QBs historically tend to perform really well. Imagine how bad Stidham would have looked being thrown in for a team like the Jets.

  7. Let’s look at the upside…Jarret Stidham raised his 2019 QBR from 18.8 to 39.4. But then again, for 17 total passes he has tossed 3 interceptions…..two if which were returned for TDs. BB better start looking for a suitable backup for Cam.

  8. This whole situation could still blow up. Many who test negative are carrying the virus. We know the reliability of tests is suspect. The Pats took two planes- separating those closest to Cam. What does the NFL do if the Pats and the Chiefs report multiple positives in a few days? This is emblematic of the disregard the NFL has for player safety. Ridiculous. Also I wonder if the game would have been played if Mahomes was positive..

  9. Newton isn’t in the top 20 for MVP right now. Do you watch any football besides the Patriots?

Stidham looked pretty good excep the underthrow
to Byrd. Gorgeous td pass to Harry.

    Hoyer wa absymal.

When Goodell cheated, didn’t postpone the game due to possible
spreading of covid with both teams having a posiitve, that was the first way. Neither qb took first team reps all week.

NE was at the stadium to travel
on the day of the game at 6am. KC could not have been helped
any more by Goodell, 48 hours after owners claimed NE was somehow “catching a break”. Some of us actually
    pay attention.

NE dominated the Chiefs, own them defensively and dropped 2 ints and another scoop and score on blocked by another convenient cheating ref
in the game. Corrente’s explanation didn’t even make sense.

NE has outplayed KC in the last 2 games and each one was manipulated by 345 Park Ave.

I wonder how the newest “investigation” is coming?

Jarrett Stidham has been in the Patriots system for a while now. By way of comparison, Chargers rookie Justin Herbert had never taken so much as a preseason NFL snap, probably also ran the Kansas City scout team all week, found out just before game time he’d start, yet played infinitely better than Stidham while nearly leading his team to an upset of the same Chiefs.

Those of us that take better care of ourselves don’t have to worry about catching heart disease from someone in the grocery store, or at work.
That’s the difference between heart disease and COVID. Cam Newton and most other young, healthy athletes likely won’t die anytime soon from either disease. But they can pass on COVID to their families, or others who might be more vulnerable. They can’t pass on heart disease.
Yours is a straw argument. But keep blaming the media.

How do you explain all these incorrect calls in favor of KC that magically get missed in these games? Good lord, NE beat KC in the title game
and I can still see BB slaing thay tablet down after a missed pick play right in front of Watkins by Conley, 12 yards downfield. How many more examples of incorrect application of rules do we need?

It is a fact 345 Park Ave instructs ref crews to call games a certain way. An unnamed replacement ref confirmed this in early 2012. They were instructed to call things a certain way. This
    was after the GB/Seattle debacle.

Rememebr when Blandino was caught changing the rule after the Jets overtime loss in 2013? He changed the wording of the rule
wrong, posted it at nfl.com and Tom Curran caught him doing it.

I could go on for days on how he manipulates rules and games the way he does by how he controls officials and tells them to favor one team or another.

Clement TD back of end zone for Philly in the sb. Not a catch by rule but he adjusted the rule to help Philly. He has owners calling him to cheat the Pats to keep his iob. Sal Palantonio confirmed this
reality during Framegate 2. I watch enough football to know this amount of calls, wrong calls, are not as consistent as they are in Pats games. It’s beyond suspicious at this point.

We went from “wondering aloud NE is catching a break” with Newton testing positive with Covid to playing less than 48 hours later having to be up at 4 am to fly to kc, to play 14-15 hours after you awoke to fly out the same day.

If Mahomes tested positive the game gets postponed.

Goodell’s antics are so well known at this point, I can predict his every move.

  47. So does this mean that Belichick’s ‘system’ without a great QB doesn’t cut it?

BTW, TB12 is doing pretty well without the system.

  48. Are you one of these creepy and weird Cowboys fans from
NE who also roots for the Pats on the side, Danny?
    —————

I am not a Cowboys fan. I cannot tell you enough but you do not listen to facts and you make up your’s. Your handle was about Ty Law. So are you a Jets, Broncos or Chiefs fan? Seeing you take abuse is always amusing. It’s is fun watching you spin like a top doubling down on nonsense just like #45 does.

Again with keeping 2 QBs with Stidham. The Pats had Kessler for half of last season and cut him in April 2020.

  49. Stidham was overhyped. He has some ability, but looks more like a backup out there.

The Pats really need Cam. I wonder if they’ll extend him or if Cam will test the market…

  50. Cam will be ok playing against Denver on Sunday. After all….Von Miller isn’t playing and we all know Miller lives in Cam’s head after the Super Bowl.

  51. Hoyer doesn’t take two bonehead sacks and score was likely 16-19 with either QB driving for a game tying FG/go ahead TD with 8:40 to go. Then we’re all having a different discussion: like, what the heck happened to Mahomes last night?

  52. Everyone do yourself a favor and listen to the Benny Hill theme song while reading P6 posts. Will bring a smile to your face.

  53. Good luck with that. Most people are asymptomatic. We have a girl at work that’s come back now and is still testing positive 4 weeks later

  54. “gomyguys says: Asymptotic like almost all healthy people. Meanwhile one person dies every 36 seconds in the US from heart disease.”

Thank you for your uninformed message. Heart disease is not contagious by the way.

  55. Honestly, the NFL is showing us how unreliable the tests really are.

There has been a disparagement between the number of infections here but the very low fatality rate. The reason seems to be that the test is unreliable.
