J.J. Watt: Deshaun Watson is the future of the franchise, Texans must build around him

Texans defensive lineman J.J. Watt is a three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year and a hero in Houston both on and off the field, but he knows that no one is more important to a football team than its franchise quarterback.

That’s why Watt said that as the Texans begin the process of finding a new coach and G.M. following the firing of Bill O’Brien, the highest priority is building around the quarterback.

Deshaun Watson‘s an incredible quarterback,” Watt said. “He’s the face of this franchise. He’s the future of this team and this city. We have to do whatever we possibly can to make sure that he’s in the best position to have success and to lead this place to success, not only this year, not only next year, but for the next 10 years. Whatever it takes to give him all the tools he needs to be successful in order to be and flourish and build into the best possible version of himself he can be, that’s what we need to do.”

It’s hard to argue with that. The Texans — under O’Brien’s leadership — gave Watson a huge new contract this year. Now they need to find the coach and G.M. who can build the rest of the team around the most important piece.

  1. Well JJ you are probably the only asset that BOB didn’t trade. Draft Picks .. gone. Cap Space .. gone. Hopkins .. gone. Clowney .. the Texans actually paid him to play for the Seahawks .. gone.

If you want to help this team it won’t be on the field. It will be at the trade deadline.

  2. Good thing the new GM will have tons of cap space and draft pics to do that!!!!!

  3. If you fired your HC 4 games into the season? You don’t have a franchise QB on your roster.

  4. Watson, like Prescott, needs to learn to take what the D gives him. Too often, with all the marbles on the line, Prescott forces a bad throw/decision into double/triple coverage and a pick is the result. He had Zeke wide open in the flat on the final play of the last game and he threw a pick to clinch it instead. Watson suffers from the same I-must-show- off-my-arm-all-the-time syndrome. Stop playing hero ball and matriculate the ball down the field. Beat them at their own game and take what they give you.

  5. I would have waited to see Watson play at least one season without his Hopkins before giving him an extension. So far, he’s 0-4.

  6. Obviously. The real question is…Will the new GM know and understand that?

  7. It sort of sounds like he’s making an argument to be traded or released. You can’t build around the quarterback if you have lots of money tied up on an all-time great pass rusher who can’t stay healthy anymore.

  8. Watson has been trying to get first and tens with two downs since he got here because of pitiful play calling by Bill Obrien. The first play in most series was a plunge over left tackle! Watson will prosper with anybody calling plays to the strength of the offense. Texans will be fine now!

Bill O’Brien deserved to be fired just for the DeAndre Hopkins trade alone. How do you allow yourself to get ripped off that hard letting go an elite multi-time All-Pro WR who’s arguably the leagues best WR all for a freaking 2nd round pick and a washed up RB. And then on top of it YOU PAY David Johnson’s $10M contract and allow AZ to dump salary onto your books, and o Ya you give them a 4th round pick to boot for good measure.

That trade is one of the moronic moves in league history. And what’s DeAndre Hopkins doing in AZ? He’s only paced to shatter the league receptions record on pace for 156 receptions & is on pace to put up a career high 1,600YDs receiving. Lets compare that to David Johnson, who has just 197YDs rushing on 51 carries AVG’n just 3.9YPC with only 10 first down runs & just 2TD’s. In the passing game Johnson only has 9 catchs for 100YDs & ZERO TDs. David Johnson is who the majority of NFL fans thought he was which is washed up and well past his prime. The Texans are paying $10M per year for that, I still cannot believe O’Brian allowed AZ GM Steve Keim to dump that contract onto the Texans.

  10. They’ve done to Watson the same thing they did to David Carr. Watson may still be able to succeed in this league but it won’t be in Houston.

  11. The difference between Bill Belichick and Bill O’Brien is Tom Brady. The difference between Bill Belichick in Cleveland, where he was fired, and Bill Belichick in New England where he won 6 super bowls is Tom Brady. So Bill O’Brien will get another opportunity, just like Belichick did after he got fired. Maybe next time around O’Brien can get lucky on a 6th round draft pick that only got on the field because of an injury to the starting QB. I guess sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good.
