Russell Wilson throws fourth-down TD with 15 seconds left to keep Seattle undefeated

The Seahawks remain undefeated, escaping the jaws of defeat yet again at home.

DK Metcalf caught a 6-yard touchdown pass on fourth down with 15 seconds remaining to give the Seahawks a come-from-behind 27-26 victory over the Vikings. It was the second fourth down Metcalf converted in the 13-play, 94-yard drive as he caught a 39-yard pass on fourth-and-10.

The Seahawks moved to 5-0 for the first time in team history, and the Vikings fell to 1-4 in giving away a game they should have won.

The Vikings led 26-21 with two minutes left and faced a fourth-and-one at the Seattle 6. Instead of trying a chip-shot Dan Bailey field goal in a driving rain, Vikings coach Mike Zimmer opted to go for it.

Bobby Wagner and Benson Mayowa stopped Alexander Mattison for no gain with 1:57 left.

That gave Russell Wilson plenty of time, too much time, despite having only one timeout.

The Vikings led 13-0 at halftime, holding the Seahawks to only 66 yards, but Seattle scored 21 unanswered points in the third quarter. Will Dissly, Metcalf and Chris Carson had scores to give the Seahawks their first lead.

But the Vikings regained the lead on Adam Thielen‘s touchdown passes of 3 and 6 yards before Russ cooked yet again.

Wilson finished 20-of-32 for 217 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. Metcalf caught six passes for 93 yards and two touchdowns.

Kirk Cousins was 27-of-39 for 249 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.

The final play of the game was ruled a fumble by Cousins on a hit by Mayowa that Kyle Rudolph recovered as time ran out. It appeared Cousins’ hand was going forward, which would have given the Vikings one last play, but replay upheld the on-field ruling and the game was over.

Mattison, who had two carries for 13 yards in the first half, replaced the NFL’s leading rusher early in the second half when Dalvin Cook left with a groin injury. Mattison finished with 112 yards on 20 carries but came up 1 yard short of delivering the win.

  1. As an AFC fan, no preference here but looked like a clear incomplete pass. That said, MN had timeouts too, so even if it’s a fumble, he was down with 2 seconds left. That’s really bad officiating!

    That all said, on the Vikings side, with a backup RB, I’m taking the 3 points, up by 8, in the rain, with your defense playing well.

  2. Two fourth down passes. Clutch when needed. DK caught two HUGE 4th down catches, the last one for the win. Russell Wilson provides the most intense moments in football. If you give him the ball with 30 seconds left and a chance to win the game, he somehow always finds a way. It is unreal. I don’t see how this guy isn’t the unanimous MVP.

  3. Russell is a great player, but he’s not the MVP. That was an ugly interception and he was off on quite a few throws.

    Tonight the MVP for the Seahawks was a completely inept Minnesota squad that has no business being in the NFL.

    Kick the field goal, idiots.

  4. Mike Zimmer is by far the worst coach in the NFL. Vikings fans hope he joins BIll O’Brien and Dan Quinn on the unemployment line tomorrow.

  5. Can anyone explain to me why they gave Seattle the ball on the first fumble, when the whistle clearly blew well before anyone had recovered it?

  6. Once again, Vikings snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. People are going to blame Zimmer for not taking the FG late. But he played that right. His mistake was earlier when he went for 2 to even the score at 21. YOU TAKE THE POINTS ON THE ROAD everyone knows this. That put him off schedule the rest of the way. If the score had been 20 to 21 back then, and you fast forward to the 4th down play, you take the fG because you go up 9.

  7. The guy took that team 95 yards in the rain in a minute and a half to win the game and some of you don’t want to give him credit. Can your QB do that kind of thing or lead a team over and over again from behind late in games? Come on. Give Russell Wilson his due.

  8. I keep saying DK is on his way to being the best WR in the NFL, his stats for the first 5 games are insane..

  9. It was an incomplete pass. Period.

    It’s almost like the NFL is trying to kill itself. Yet another horrible horrible call.

    A fumble??? Does anyone really believe that if a Vikings player had picked that ball up and run all the way into the end zone they would have called it a touchdown??

  10. Some interesting calls here:
    That first DK Metcalf throw was a TD, and the fade to him seemed to have been PI (or holding) on the defense.
    That last ‘fumble’ was an incompletion, too

    But it was a great game, and the Vikings are back to being the Vikings.

    This game was eerily similar to Week 17 vs San Fran

    Down 13 at half, rallying in the third, becoming a slugfest, coming down to fourth and goal from the six yard line,

  11. This game was eerily similar to Week 17 vs San Fran

  12. Damn It!
    I was really hoping the Vikings would finally take a step forward and knock off the Seahawks tonight.
    But in their usual Viking way, they couldn’t even get that right.
    Dumb decision by Zimmer to forego the field goal late, and I don’t care how you rationalize it.

    Russell Wilson was stellar as usual, great QB, and though the season’s still young, definitely deserves to be in the MVP discussion.

    Let me ask you Barneys an honest question, do y’all still have all that trust in Zimmer yet?

  13. The ruling on the field was fumble, no clear evidence that was the wrong call. Couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch of fans.

  14. All those the last few years saying all Wilson is, is a game manager, well I hear you now.

    Crickets crickets

  15. This is the third game this season I feel the Seahawks should have lost. How can you not kick a field goal when you’re playing on the road, knowing that you could have had an 8 point lead? These games just look so fake and scripted sometimes. It’s like when Malcolm Butler knew exactly where Wilson was going to throw the ball from the 1 yard line at the end of Super Bowl XLIX. They practiced it ahead of time.

  16. Wow that was a horrible decision. Kick the field goal and go up by 8 points. There is just no way I thought they would actually hike that ball.

  17. Zimmers to nervous to be a coach…every big moment our D nuts up… his losing in Cincinnati has rubbed on the Vikes…

  18. I’m thinking that the ball was in control and hand starting forward. I’m positive it was very close, but sure it was not clear & convincing. I’m sure it would have not have been overturned regardless of what the call was on the field. I’m also not sure I don’t do the chip shot to go up by 8 instead of going for it on 4th down. That’s on the Vikings shoulders.

    Entertaining game. Nice to go into the Bye 5-0. Go Hawks!

  19. Any other game, that last pass by the QB is ruled incomplete – but because no one could maintain crowd control they deem it a fumble and end of game – more fixed than a John Cena match.

  20. Man, Zimmer is a horrible coach. So much talent on that roster and they’re saddled with the worst coach in the NFL. If it wasn’t so hilarious, I’d really feel sorry for them.

  21. No dog in any NFC race but as a football fan I find it ridiculous that any end of game official call or review in Seattle always goes in their favor. It can’t be a coincidence that teams consistently get the short stick on calls there that impact the final score. Weird man.

  22. Mike Zimmer is an idiot. Why give Wilson a freebie? The Vikings defense did the best I’ve seen against Wilson this year and their coach blew it. Wilson did what he always does but he shouldn’t have had the chance to.

  23. Zimmer continues to make stupid in-game decisions. Guys played their hearts out and he can’t manage the scoreboard. Kick extra point early in game, field goal on 4th and 1 and you win the game!

  24. Big physical receiver like Metcalf and you cover him with a single corner in crunch time. Vikings deserve to lose that one.

  25. Going for it on 4th down was 100% the right play, you make that and you essentially ice the game. Even if you miss they still need a touchdown to win and they have a longer field.

    Sometimes you have to give the other team credit for making the play.

    Stupid take. Even if they kick the xp on the first TD there is 0 chance they kick the xp up 5 in the 4th.

    _______________________________________________________________________________________

    You realize there were about 10 seconds left in the game when that ‘fixed’ play happened, don’t you? Even if it was ruled incomplete, the Vikes needed to go 30-40 yards in a downpour and make a field goal to win and Cousins is not RW… Seahawks win either way.

  28. Again, Cousins did his best to screw the game in the 3rd quarter.

    First a fumble at his own 25, followed by a Seattle TD.
    Then on the very next possession, interception at his own 25, followed by a Seattle TD.
    So in the span of one minute on the clock, MIN goes from leading 13-7 to end up trailing 21-13, by giving 2 back to back red zone opportunities.

    Lol, what??

  30. I’m the biggest Zimmer fan there is.,.. but honest to god he should be fired after that..,,, that’s unexplainable

  31. Twice in 3 weeks Zimmer screwed up on going for 2 point conversions.
    Against the Titans with more than 10 minutes to go Zimmer got greedy and went for the 2 points and failed so instead of a 6 point lead for the Vikings … they were up by 5. The Titans had two more possessions they got 2 FGs for 6 points and won by 1 point.
    Tonight in the 3rd quarter instead of being down only one point 20-21 Zimmer got greedy and went for the 2 points and FAILED. Fast forward to the last 2 minutes of the game … Vikings instead of being up 6 points and kicking the FG for the win. Zimmer did the math and figured out if the Seahawks got the ball they could tied it up with a 2 pt conversion.
    The last 2 Viking losses are on Zimmer for going for the 2 point conversions too early in the games.

  32. Plenty of bad officiating in this game, and neglect of proper review in last two minutes.

    I agree with Belichick, challenge flags should be usable for any call at any time.

  33. The FG wasn;t a definite win… even if they kick the FG…go up by 8? Then Wilson doesn’t have as afar to go right? They still get the TD and then need a 2pt for overtime…which could totally happen.

  34. Just kick the FG.

    It would have forced them to score a TD and get the 2 pt conversion just to tie.

    Unbelievably bad decision

  35. As a Packer fan I recall only too well what it’s like to have a game in your hands and blow it in Seattle. I would’ve believed the Vikings could still turn their season around, if not for another Cook injury.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Uhhhhm… you do know that all professional wrestling matches are fixed, yes?
  37. Someone should take a full page ad in the Philly newspapers with this article and put a question at the bottom. Philly would you rather have Metcalf or JJAW?
    JJAW’s lone catch yesterday (lone catch on the year) ended the 1st half while the Eagles were in FG range because he couldn’t get out of bounds. Metcalf is running past defenders toe tapping the sideline to preserve the Seahawks last time out and catching the game winning TD.
    JJAW will probably be out of football after this year but hey, i hear he is great at the cone drill.
  38. What difference does it make on the last play? The refs took pity on the Vikings, looked in the future, saw Cousins pick six on the next play, and decided the play was close enough to put them out of their misery with a moral victory one point loss. Personally I thank the refs for that.
  39. If Madison opens his eyes, there’s a lane big enough to drive a truck through to his right. Instead he bowls into his own guy and doesn’t get the first down. Classic Vikings.
  40. Go easy with the MVP talk, it was against a 1-4 Vikings team that gave away the game when they refused to kick a FG to put them up 8 points with 2 minutes left to go in the game. There are bad coaching decisions, terrible coaching decisions and then there is Mike Zimmer.
  41. Zimmer obviously watched the video of Seattle’s game in Miami the week before. It’s very difficult to beat the Seahawks with Russell Wilson’s offense by kicking field goals. It was the right call, the players have to execute. Hold your heads up, Vikings fans, I still think your team is very good. The schedule should get easier.
    They will need to march into Lambeau Field the first day of November and send a message that they can win big games.
  42. Hey Vikings, Russell Wilson is NOT Sam Darnold. Asking Sam Darnold to go 90 yards is a little different.
    But I’m glad you lost.
    #fieldgoal
  43. “Mike Zimmer is by far the worst coach in the NFL. Vikings fans hope he joins BIll O’Brien and Dan Quinn on the unemployment line tomorrow.”
    Even as someone who seriously dislikes the Vikings, I would still have to disagree with that statement. Zimmer is a fantastic coach who has had the Vikings squad outperforming their talent level for several years.
    Their drafting is not great and salary cap hell kicked in this year, but saying Zimmer is the worst coach in the NFL is plain dumb.
  44. Tough loss for the Vikings. I have no problem with them trying to ice the game on 4th down instead of kicking the FG. Besides, as a Viking fan, a ‘gimme’ FG attempt late in a game, against Seattle, brings back bad memories as well. The offense was moving, a first down ices the win, and Wilson never gets a chance.
    But, for all of those showering love on DK Metcalf, how is he allowed to push and jab at defensive players after the whistle on nearly every play? He may be talented, but he didn’t show much professionalism on that.
    Also, not sure why on multiple obvious helmet to helmet hits by Seattle, that didn’t look worse than the one by Harrison Smith last week, only one even draws a flag, and their defenders didn’t get run out like Smith did. I am fine with whichever way they want to call that, but let’s be consistent. Maybe they need to review those hits, like college football, to decide if someone gets tossed or not instead of leaving it to the on field officials, who have so many other things to be concerned with.
  45. Crazy game. Easy to question Zimmer on going for it, but they were absolutely GASHING the Seattle defense on the ground. If he gets that less than 1 yard, it’s V formation as the Hawks only had 1 timeout left. Zimmer hailed as a genius.
    If they don’t get the 1st down or kick the FG, either way RW3 has to come through with a drive for TD in under 2 min with 1 timeout. With the way the defense had been pressuring and covering, I suspect the percentage game says go for the win.
    On the “fumble” at the end, I honestly don’t know. They kept saying during the broadcast that “full control” of the ball in the hand. I think the ball was in the hand, but I don’t think he had control. As a Hawks fan, I’m of course fine with the result, but I dunno if it was the right call or not.
  46. As a longtime Viking fan I like the aggressiveness of going for it on 4th down. My biggest issue is the play calling. Why not max protect KC, he’s not that mobile or quick. Why not a jumbo package for the 4th down or wide spread with a qb sneak. The 3 turnovers by KC cost us the game, not a fix, not an official. Metcalf should have been doubled when you have a rookie on him for 4th down.
  47. Madison picked the wrong hole on 4th down. If he goes 1 player to his right then he walks into the end zone. Terrible play.
  48. 2015: Vikings miss a field goal against Seahawks and lose
    2020: Vikings pass on a field goal against Seahawks and lose
  49. Terrible coaching by MIN.
    Not a Seahawks fan but man I wish Wilson was my teams QB. Has to be the best QB in the NFL right now.
  50. Me and I’m sure most Seahawks fans were praying they kicked the fg . Going for it was the right call. Hawks d just came through big when they needed it . Then it was all Russ! Seahawks might not be the best team out there . But they got more heart than any of them.
    Going for it on 4th down was 100% the right play, you make that and you essentially ice the game. Even if you miss they still need a touchdown to win and they have a longer field.
    ==================
    If you miss, as they did, then Seattle can win the game outright with a TD, as they did. If you kick the field goal, there’s no way Seattle can win outright – the best they can do, even with a TD and 2-pt conversion, is tie and send it to OT.
    Even with the way Seattle was playing, a TD+2 is unlikely for any team on a given drive. And even if they get it, you don’t lose yet.
  52. Again, Cousins did his best to screw the game in the 3rd quarter. First a fumble at his own 25, followed by a Seattle TD. So in the span of one minute on the clock, MIN goes from leading 13-7 to end up trailing 21-13, by giving 2 back to back red zone opportunities.
  53. It was the correct decision to go for 4th and 1 instead of field goal. Zim should have kicked the X point instead of going for two though, letting Cousins try to run for it. The green and yellows are upset because they know the Seahawks are head and shoulders above them and if they face the Seahawks in Seattle during the playoffs, the pack will lose much like the pounding they received in San Fran last year. That is all
  54. Wonder if coach Mike Zimmer woke up this morning screaming kick the field goal idiot and win the damn football game? its bad enough when players make mistakes on the field but when coaches do from the sidelines that lose games its magnified.it was a chip shot for their kicker. did Zimmer really think his rotten defense could stop the Seahags offense from scoring.
  55. Everyone calling Gruden a genius for going for it on 4th to seal the game and not let Mahomes back on the field.
    Now Zimmer’s an idiot.
    If it works, game over.
    It didn’t work.
  56. This is obviously a game that the NFL wanted the Seahawks to win. It was apparent in the calls, especially down the stretch. It doesn’t matter though, Minnesota put the rest of the league on notice with their performance. Cousins was by far the best QB on the field last night, and Cook showed once again that he’s the best back in the league. And Mattison would be a starter on any other team. And that O-Line!! What a group of studs!! And all young and under contract for a very long time. Add to that the top receiver tandem in the league and that suffocating defense, all coached by the best coaching staff in the game, and what you have are 31 other teams that do not want to face Minnesota – especially in January when it all counts!
  57. I just don’t see the upside to not taking the points and giving Wilson 90 seconds at home to drive for a winning score. If they kick the field goal and are up by 8, then it’s a much tougher scenario for Seattle to win.
    Glad you still have your sense of humor
  59. Lol Vikings fans… so predictable. Don’t blame the officials. Blame your coach. Still haunted by Blair Walsh and a missed FG in the playoffs (I was at that game), they go for it on 4th, and can’t get one yard when they have been running at will all night. Not kicking the field goal was a terrible decision, and that’s why the Vikings took the L. All I could think when I saw it was ‘you deserved it’… trash talking all game long, celebrating every 1st down like it was a touchdown. When you confuse progress with victory, this is the outcome. Another top 10 pick for the Vikings… this is how it gets done in MN.
    Thats a different situation. The Raiders were already up by 8 and out of field goal range.
    The Vikings were up by 5 and could have been up by 8
  63. Zim has his faults, most NFL coaches do, but that 4th and 1 call was just fine (it worked two times previously and if Mattison keeps his head up and hits the right gap, he scores), and folks conveniently forget that the very Zimmer run defense they are trashing, held Wilson to his poorest performance of the year and like 50 yards in the first half. This is a defense without half its starting D line, a pro bowl LB and an all rookie defensive backfield. If anything, this game was lost by the team’s lousy RG.
  64. Another fine play by the traditionally horrific Viking offense;
    No go on 4th and one,
    Seahawks go on to win,
    Vikings season done!
  65. Wow the Vikes sure showed the weaknesses of the Sea Hawks – no pass rush, poor running game, not able to stop the run. Their record reflects a lot of luck. Teams will ajust going forward and the going gets tougher for them.
  66. I like Zimmers move. It wasnt even 4th and one it was about a half foot and Seahawks hadnt stopped anyone all night.
    The D had the opportunity to stop the drive down field and failed.
  67. The percentage sheet these coaches use for going for 2 point conversions are definitely insane…you should only go for 2 when you HAVE to…that is where the Vikes lost this game…I never understood why this coach was ever hired in the first place. Hell, he wasn’t even a good DC before his hire, and he sure can’t manage a freaking football game at all…
  68. After the bye they get back Adams, Brooks, Green, Hyde, maybe Thorpe, Dorsett and maybe Flash Gordon.
    Hopefully Snacks will also be ready.
    I expect their defense to improve as well as their offense
  69. As a football fan, it is just fun to watch Russell play football. How has this guy never even got a MVP vote?
