49ers embark on seven-game gauntlet

Last year, the 49ers had a three-game November gauntlet that helped prove their status as one of the best teams in the league: Packers, at Ravens, at Saints. (The 49ers went 2-1.)

This year, the 49ers embark on a seven-game stretch that will either re-establish them as contenders or seal their fate as the latest team that lost the Super Bowl and then failed to get back to the playoffs.

Consider this stretch, starting next Sunday night on NBC: Rams, at Patriots, at Seahawks, Packers, at Saints, at Rams, Bills. Given the injuries and their current quarterback struggles, how many of these games will the 49ers win?

Some 49ers fans fret that the answer is none. Indeed, it’s entirely possible (although not likely) that the 49ers will now embark on a seven-game free fall.

Whatever they do, they can’t hide. Six of the next seven games are slated for prime TV placement, from Sunday Night Football (vs. Rams) to 4:25 p.m. ET on CBS (at New England) to 4:25 p.m. ET on FOX (at Seattle) to Thursday Night Football (vs. Packers) to 4:25 p.m. ET on FOX (at Saints) to Monday Night Football (vs. Bills).

Although it would be foolish to write them off, at this point it would be more than foolish to write them in for a spot in the Super Bowl, or even in the postseason.

  1. 49er fans been thumping their chest saying they still got wins despite their injuries yet both of their victories came against winless teams.

The article lays it out perfectly, this is the stretch you prove if you are contenders or pretenders. The game agaist the Rams may cause some people to get fired. The Dolphins made them say uncle at halftime.

  2. Got alot to fix in a week. Right now we’re a total mess. It can be done but I’m not holding my breath. The adversity doesn’t get much bigger than what my Niners are facing right now.

Saleh would be the only one that could possibly get fired but that won’t happen. Shannahan just signed an extension this summer, so did Lynch. The problem is Kyle’s offense has become vanilla. It all starts with his play calling. Deebo, Kittle, Aiyuk and Mostert…that should be 30 points a game easily. The o-line is terrible right now. The secondary is the worst in the league. No question. The front 7 is not getting pressure, missing tackles and getting gashed. Jimmy G is off. Like really off. As a Niners fan, I’m definitely worried. The NFC West is the best division in football. They cannot afford to drop another game.

  4. The Niners haven’t recovered from the huge losses on both sides of the ball. The defensive line is missing the top two players. The secondary is missing the top two defenders.

The offense is almost together, but the O-line is a mess, and Garoppolo isn’t healed, yet.

They will get really good towards the end of the season…..but way too late to make a difference, or to even get to the playoffs.

  5. Super Bowl runner up hangover. All the comments about the 49rs in house and through the media about how great of a team they have etc. Yet, poor QB play won’t get fixed overnight and even if they win 3 of the tough 6 ahead it’s tough sledding for a playoff spot.

  6. Reportedly after the game Shanahan went into the Dolphins locker room and made Fitzpatrick a sandwich and rubbed his feet.

  7. This game was on the defensive backs which started a backup and literally two guys signed off the practice squad. Once the 49ers fell behind, they stopped running the ball.

  8. Not as “foolish” as your constant chatter up until five weeks ago about the Vikings being a “strong Super Bowl contender”.

It is indeed “foolish” every offseason when you claim the Vikings are going to the Super Bowl.

  9. In other words, every prime time game over the next seven weeks will be just like watching Monday Night Football…

  10. They’re already three games behind Seattle and two behind the Rams.

They don’t turn it around quick, no playoffs.

  11. They have been hammered by injuries. I am a Hawks fan, but have a lot of respect for 49ers team. I see them getting back on track later in the season. If they squeeze into the playoffs they will be the team nobody wants to draw, or maybe not.
