Seahawks’ defense on pace to shatter NFL record for most yards allowed

The Seahawks are on pace for an NFL record they’d rather not break.

Seattle’s defense has allowed 2,356 yards this season. That’s not just the most in the NFL this year, it’s a record pace: At their current pace of allowing 471 yards a game, the Seahawks would allow 7,539 yards in a 16-game season. That’s by far the worst ever.

Only one team in NFL history has allowed 7,000 yards in a season: The 2012 Saints, who allowed 7,042 yards.

The biggest difference between those Saints and these Seahawks is that the Saints went 7-9 in 2012, but the Seahawks are 5-0 this season. The Seahawks’ defense is giving up a lot of yardage, but Russell Wilson and the Seahawks’ offense are playing well enough that the defense hasn’t lost any games.

  1. They are also creating turnovers. I don’t think the defense is good and I put that on Ken Norton Jr. but the talent there is creating take aways needed.

  2. That may last to the division win, but you can’t win in the playoffs like that against good teams…. I mean they came back and beat the Vikings…

  3. Yards allowed doesn’t matter as much as points allowed.

10 teams have allowed more points than Seattle. So, they’re not a top ten defense, but they do enough to allow their offense to win 5 straight. Not too bad.

  4. As a Seahawks fan I’m glad we are 5-0 but that defense is horrendous. This is our bye week and a good time to replace Norton. They are not even close to playing up to expectations.

  5. They were also ahead by 10+ points in each game up to yesterday. These 3rd and 4th qtr leads mean the opponents will be passing and passing some more. This leads to a lot of yardage because the Seahawks are another team that for some reason changes their pass defense to allow lots and lots of 5-15 yard pass completions to allow the other team to eat the clock.

Don’t know if that’s Pete’s decision or Norton’s, but Pete was a defensive back and coached defensive backs so it’s probably just as much him as the problem. Norton was a LB and a LB coach. He never dealt with DBs and pass coverage until he became the Seahawks DC.

  6. “…but we were told that the Colt defense is the best in the league!”

It is. They’ve allowed the fewest points in the league, while recording 10 sacks, 2 safeties, 7 interceptions, and 2 TDs.

  7. Sure, but the Defense also saved 2 games. They stopped Newton a couple weeks back and then shut the door on the Vikings on 4th down, giving Russ a chance to win the game.

Without those 2 stops they have 2 losses.

    Not a contender.

    _______________

Hawks have been a contender for 8+ years… If you want to see who’s not, look at the basement of the NFC West.

    Go Hawks!!!

It’s all great until the playoffs start and you run into complete teams, teams that have as good of a D as the offense and then you’re toast!

  10. Soon they’ll realize that Wilson is winging it too. That backyard passing game wears off, and he will be exposed too

  11. The defence hasn’t been great, in terms of yards and points conceded.

However, when required, in almost every game, the defence makes game changing big plays, creating turnovers and vital stops at vital stages, somewhat mitigating the points and yards conceded.

  12. D will get back Adams, their best defender,Brooks (they’re using third string LB), R Green, last year’s sack leader who is yet to play, Snacks, who should shore up the run defense, and at some point their second pick, Taylor, who some said was the best pass rusher in the SEC.

The D has to improve, but it doesn’t have to be great. They have been clutch.

Also remember on O they’ll also get back Hyde and Penny (over 5 YPC career), Dorsett (more deep receiver speed) and possibly Flash Gordon. Their offense may get even better.
