PFT’s Week Six power rankings*

[Editor’s note: With the NFL playing a Tuesday night game for the first time in nearly a decade, I had a decision to make regarding the Week Six power rankings: Hold them until Wednesday or post them on Tuesday? I decided on a mixed approach. The original version comes Tuesday. The rankings then will be updated on Tuesday night, after the Bills-Titans game. If there’s a Bills-Titans game.]

1. Seahawks (No. 2; 5-0): The Seahawks have made it to 5-0 for the first time ever. Far more importantly, they’ve made it back to No. 1.

2. Bills (No. 3; 4-0): Whether they hold this spot depends on whether they can win in Tennessee. If they win big enough, could they leapfrog Seattle?

3. Packers (No. 4; 4-0): They’re so good that they go up a spot even when they don’t play.

4. Chiefs (previously No. 1; 4-1): They’re vulnerable when playing opponents that don’t have their full attention.

5. Ravens (No. 5; 4-1): They’ve recovered pretty damn quickly from their Week Three encounter with Kryptonite.

6. Patriots (No. 6; 2-2): The fact that a team as buttoned up as the Patriots are having COVID-19 issues shows how unrelenting it is.

7. Steelers (No. 9; 4-0): With four close wins against not-great teams, how good are they? We’ll find out this weekend against the Browns.

8. Titans (No. 8; 3-0): Must . . . resist . . . making . . . a comment . . . that refers to . . . that movie.

9. Rams (No. 12; 4-1): Winning can make ugly uniforms look a lot better.

10. Saints (No. 10; 3-2): A win is a win, but the Saints are still a long way from the dominant force they’ve been in the past few regular seasons.

11. Browns (No. 13; 4-1): Cleveland fans deserve this. Based on the schedule, they should get a lot more of it.

12. Bears (No. 14; 4-1): If the offense could put it together for four quarters, they’d run the table.

13. Raiders (No. 18; 3-2): To his credit, Derek Carr finally unleashed the deep ball.

14. Panthers (No. 15; 3-2): Who needs Christian McCaffrey? (Actually, pretty much every team. But the Panthers somehow are 3-0 without him.)

15. Buccaneers (No. 7; 3-2): Tom Brady‘s mental mistake has been compounded by his refusal to admit it.

16. Colts (No. 11; 3-2): Just when the bandwagon was starting to fill up, everyone is going to start jumping off.

17. Cardinals (No. 19; 3-2): Kyler Murray gets his chance to show a national audience what he can do on Monday night against the Cowboys.

18. Dolphins (No. 21; 2-3): Does that count as revenge for Super Bowl XIX?

19. Cowboys (No. 17; 2-3): Losing Dak may lower expectations just enough for Andy Dalton to exceed them.

20. 49ers (No. 16; 2-3): The next seven games will either re-establish the defending NFC Champions or bury them.

21. Chargers (No. 20; 1-4): They’re too good to be 1-4.

22. Eagles (No. 22; 1-3-1): They’re not good enough to be 1-3-1.

23. Bengals (No. 23; 1-3-1): It’s time to take whatever they can get for A.J. Green.

24. Broncos (No. 24; 1-3): An unscheduled bye gives Drew Lock even more of a chance to return for the Patriots game.

25. Vikings (No. 25; 1-4): They squandered their best chance to beat Seattle, without an assist from Blair Walsh.

26. Texans (No. 30; 1-4): The Artificial Interim Coach Bounce is real.

27. Lions (No. 26; 1-3): Texans, Falcons, Lions?

28. Washington (No. 27; 1-4): Alex Smith gives them a much better chance than Kyle Allen to turn this thing around.

29. Jaguars (No. 28; 1-4): Tank for Trevor is back on.

30. Falcons (No. 29; 0-5): The fumes of 28-3 have lingered longer than anyone ever would have expected.

31. Giants (No. 31; 0-5): If they could ever get a win, maybe they could string a few together.

32. Jets (No. 32; 0-5): The current path is not sustainable, for any NFL franchise.

Uh, did you happen to see the Seahawks unis? Rams are hardly the worst unis out there.

  2. I like how writers keep over-rating the Seahawks. Without Russ this team would be 1-4 at best. No defense. It took until the last second to not lose to a 1-4 team at home. Bandwagon fan base back on!

  3. With my team headed for mediocrity this early in the season, I’m intrigued by the race to the “Dead Sea” of the Power Rankings.

  4. Washington should be 31 (and I say this as a fan who follows them). They have shown absolutely nothing over the past two weeks. They essentially laid down and died.

Only the Jets seem to be worse at this point.

Seriously, if you had all 12 one or zero-win teams play each other right now in a round-robin format, how many wins do you think Washington would get? I’m thinking one…over the Jets.

  5. I guess it makes sense the Bills should leapfrog the Chiefs, considering the Bills beat the team who just beat them. Kinda. Sorta. But if they lose to a Titans team in disarray, a massive tumble is in order

  6. When the Seahawks actually play a decent team* that can close, they’ll lose some games.

*The Pats are 2-2 and aren’t as good as people think they are, don’t @ me.

  7. Why are the Pats with a 2-2 record ranked #6, and the Steelers with a 4-0 record ranked #7?

    MAKES NO SENSE!

  8. This is weird seeing the Bills so high up. I’m afraid of having high expectations, because of the fear of being let down. One can only hope this keeps going!

  9. Raiders are far better then ranked 13! I see mike is following the league mandate, keeping the patriots relevant at 6. What a joke!

  10. The Raiders just beat the formerly #1 ranked, undefeated, Super Bowl champs in their own house HANDILY. They also beat the Saints in week 2 HANDILY. But somehow the Saints are ranked 10th and the Raiders 13th? That makes a lot of sense.

  11. 32. Jets (No. 32; 0-5): The current path is not sustainable, for any NFL franchise.
    ==

The Jets have been treading a path to nowhere — without GPS — for a very long time, and aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. Perpetuating incompetence is what they do best. Isn’t that the very definition of sustainable?

  12. The Giants are going to do the unthinkable….JUST miss out on Chase Young and Trevor Lawrence in back-to-back drafts. You cant it up if you tried.

  13. Seahawks barely winning several games and having the worst defense in the NFL?

Nah, all set. Top five maybe. Top team? lol

  14. The Vikings blow it against the Seahawks and you move them to 1? Seahawks are toast if they play a team that doesn’t choke.

  15. The Seahawks defense is too terrible for them to be the top team.

It pains me to say it, but Green Bay should be ranked number 1 right now. They’ve been the most dominant and well-rounded so far and have a HOF QB. You could make an argument for the Bills too.

  16. Why are the Saints 3 spots higher than the Raiders? They both have the same record and the Raiders beat them. Saints look to be slipping as Brees is finally starting to show his age – can’t keep them on a pedestal because of past performances! They barely escaped with a win against a rookie QB last night. C’mon Man!

  17. Both the Giants and the Jets are bad this year, but the Giants at least have some fighting spirit, and they made competitive games against the Rams, Bears, and Cowboys, but the Jets, wow, that team is a real mess.

  18. The Chiefs are shaky. Mahomes should have had 2 picks against NE and probably lost as he was off target all night. His pick against LV was another ugly throw. The defense was shredded by LV as well. I don’t see the Chiefs making it to the SB unless there’s a truncated season.

    ——-
It makes perfect sense, it’s not a ‘what do the standings read’ it’s a power rankings. The Pats lost to the #1 and #2 team at the time (Hawks/chiefs) at the goal line and another competitive game without their starting WB, with some very questionable plays/calls.

In a nutshell, the editor is telling you he thinks the Pats would beat the Steelers if they played right now. Simple.

  20. Not saying Tampa Bay is the team many were predicting they would be, but they trounced Carolina, yet somehow are ranked behind them with the same record… The list is trash

  21. Good drop on the 49ers. They are last year’s Rams when they fell apart after making the Super Bowl.

  22. 8. Titans (No. 8; 3-0): Must . . . resist . . . making . . . a comment . . . that refers to . . . that movie.

    ————————–

No seahawks fan would argue with you about their Defense. It has been/is putrid…but they’re still 5-0.

Whether or not they ‘should’ be ranked first, the fact that they’re 5-0, have the hottest QB in the league and a juggernaut of an offense can’t be ignored.

  24. Hawks number one?! Get a grip, Florio. They’ve played the Falcons, Cowboys, Vikings (who they barely beat, and the Dolphins!! The only good win they have is the Pats and the jury is still out on them. They beat up on a bunch of crap teams and had to have a touchdown with 15 seconds left to beat my team. They might be a fringe top 10 team but without Russ they are in the bottom third of the league, no question.

  25. Packers don’t play and you move them up. You’re really biased. Or you have that man love thing going on for Rodgers.

The Patriots are always better than the Steelers. Especially when it matters.

  27. “28. Washington (No. 27; 1-4): Alex Smith gives them a much better chance than Kyle Allen to turn this thing around.”

Did you watch this game at all??? Great story but Smith can’t move anymore.

  28. 12. Bears (No. 14; 4-1): If the offense could put it together for four quarters, they’d run the table.

I’d be happy with three quarters of competent offense

  29. I stopped reading after I saw the Pats at no. 6. I think these rankings are based on past seasons performances and not now. Oh and the Chiefs are very very vulnerable as are probably 31 other teams this’ season including the Packers and Seahawks.

  30. It’s hard to believe there are three teams considered worse than the Jags. Too bad those teams don’t get the chance to play the Jags and get them in the win column.

    ________

Obviously, you must be new to this site, because your two statements couldn’t be further from the truth.

  32. I don’t think the Bills have proven too much yet – the tough part of their schedule still likes ahead.

But the good start & current high ranking are a reflection of the new regime there. They have done an outstanding job of building a team not just for the moment, but for the future. There is a young core that they can build around for years.

And did they ever get the QB pick right in that draft. Allen looks like the best of that bunch right now.

  33. These rankings only count when it comes time for bowl bids at the end of the season.

Wait…what? There are no bowl games? Then what’s the point of the rankings??

  34. New England will be exposed. No way they should be ahead of the Steelers and would lose head to head.

  35. Seahawks finally made the jump that they deserve. But how much can that offense offset that defense throughout the season?

  36. When the dust settles after Sunday the Steelers will be #1 and the Browns will be kicked out of the top #25.

  37. Here is my bold take. Swap the Patriots with the Buccaneers. The Pats are awful without Cam Newton, they have a harder schedule, and they had like eight players who opted out. Currently, Tampa Bay has allowed the fewest rushing yards, and they lead the league with seven interceptions on defense that led to touchdowns. The Bucs also rank top ten in scoring points offensively.

  38. giants and washington play for the rank 32 bowl this week…i know my giants will find a way to win just to put some space between us and the top pick, it’s what we do

  39. Props to the Raiders but as the yarn goes, every dog has his day, Chiefs would beat them 9 out of 10. Not a fan but the Chiefs are still #1 in my book.

    Go Pack.

  40. I used to like PTF’s power rankings until this season. I don’t understand the infatuation with the Patriots, how are they at #6 lol.

I feel like there’s a little bias going on with Pats/Brady. Pats lose and they don’t move down much. Bucs on a 3 win streak and finally lose a close one and they plummet down to 15, yes makes total sense.

  41. You should use reasoning over records more often, like you did with the Chargers. Calling the team with the worst defense in the league the most powerful team lacks credibility. If their defense doesn’t improve, their record will soon be corrected. IMO, Chiefs are still on top, even with their loss this week.

  42. You heard it hear first. LV is 55. This years Super Bowl is 55. LV will be there and win Super Bowl LV.

  43. Have some semblence of credibility or brains and drop the Pats out of the top 10.
Utterly ridiculous. And the rams unis are not ugly.

  44. Lol the Packers are way too high. I can’t wait for them to be crushed and exposed in the playoffs once again. DISCOUNT DOUBLE CHOKE!

  45. I generally don’t care about power rankings. It’s too much like having an employee of the month. However, this gave me the lulz: “15. Buccaneers (No. 7; 3-2): Tom Brady‘s mental mistake has been compounded by his refusal to admit it.”

Grandpa Brady should’ve retired after SB 53. Gone out on top, like Jerry Seinfeld. Hey, at least he would’ve had his dignity intact, and nobody would question his cognitive skills, eh? Well, at least not on the field. I’m afraid he damaged that “dignity” with the old “if you drink enough water, you don’t get sunburned” snake oil.

The only problem with your take is the fact that Brady wouldn’t have set a 5 touchdown pass record against the Chargers at the age of 43, had he retired after winning Super Bowl LIII. He can definitely still play. Let’s be honest, if Belichick re-signed Danny Amendola and Trent Brown, and Gronk didn’t take last season off, Brady would have won his seventh ring last season. Belichick’s stinginess on offense led Brady to the Bucs.

Pats @ #6 and Fins @ #18. By Nov.16 Fins will be ahead of Pats in their own division.

    ——-
Caesars Sportsbook currently has the Pats at 15-1 to win the AFC Championship and the Dolphins at 50-1. Just a little reality check for the rational out there.

  48. Maybe the Titans should take the Bills spot at #2 and maybe leapfrog Seattle? Really don’t care though.

  50. The CFL already has a team called the Lions…that being said, it did have two Rough Riders for the longest time!
