Colts say all four tests were false positives, game vs. Bengals is on

The Colts closed their facility today after four members of the team initially tested positive for COVID-19, but their game against the Bengals on Sunday is still on.

“The four positive samples were re-tested and have been confirmed negative,” the team said in a statement. “The team will open the practice facility this afternoon under the league’s intensive protocol and will continue preparation for Sunday’s game against Cincinnati.”

Colts owner Jim Irsay wrote on Twitter that “all is well” and the game will be played as scheduled.

What remains unclear is why the NFL has had so many false positives. Both the NHL and the NBA made it through their entire postseasons testing every player every day without ever having to shut down a team because of a false positive test. The NFL has had several false positives, and four false positives hitting one team at once has to concern the league.

Still, the news is good: The Colts are healthy, and the game is on.

  1. Between players coaches staff and front office, the colts employ about 400+ people. How many people do the NBA and NHL employ per team?
I would guess closer the about 30% of that.

More testing means more room for error In the results

  2. NBA bubbled. Tests in one place, one lab. No transport, and one quarter the number of people (less teams, smaller teams). The NFL should bubble in some form.

  3. 9 months into this virus and billion dollar franchises can’t get proper testing.

Yet all the average Joe’s out there, testing positive at their local clinics, are all spot on? Arsenial Hall says; “things that make you go hmm”…

  4. so if these positive tests are proven to be negative all the time, how true are the numbers the media tells the public about every day?

  5. Should that particular test even be considered valid anymore?
Is the NFL using a different kind of test than other leagues used?
Can’t compare the NBA as they were in a bubble, but MLB figured it out.
Can’t let Rob Manfred or maneuver you.

The rapid tests are low accuracy–exact numbers aren’t known but usually 90-95% for both positive and negative results. So you have some number of false positives as well as some number of false negatives. There are more accurate tests but they take longer to return results, too long to keep sick people from infecting others. So what it sounds like is that the NFL is ignoring the false negatives everyone assumes they have, and telling the teams to isolate when they get a positive result–while they run better but slower tests to “confirm” the positives.

  7. 4 false positives at once is a weird number for me. like 1 would be some random problem with the test. but if it was contaminated reagents (which happens in research labs for sure, ideally not in clinical testing labs), i feel like it should be a larger number than 4.

  8. If all the false results are from same lab or same brand/model lab equipment and test kits a change needs to be considered, or perhaps get 2 samples to run simultaneously.

  9. And just think about how often this happens in the “regular” world and how many times just the initial numbers are reported and never followed up with the false positives.

  10. Pretty sure the NFL uses batch sample testing methodology. As in, each test is not done individually, but grouped into a larger population of other samples, and then that is tested for the virus. A negative means everyone in that group is cleared, while a positive means someone in that grouping has it and further testing is done by breaking that group down smaller. This saves on ost and more importantly, saves on limited testing resources.

Further testing takes time, but all clients are still notified of a possible positive in the mean time.

The rapid antigen testing the NFL is using is KNOWN to be less accurate than the more reliable PCR testing done for the public. However, you get much quicker turn around time, hence why the NFL needs to use it.

  12. we cant be having all these false positives. Why is one of the richest organizations on Earth using unreliable testing? it makes you wonder how many false negatives are out there

  13. I worked in a lab in biotech for many years and the errors are likely due to analyst error because there’s a huge number of tests that have to be processed now. Overworked, underpaid, understaffed

  14. I’m not making a judgement on the 4 false positives, but it seems a little strange, at least, from my experience with testing. Our business has 70 employees, and 4 people have gotten Covid at various times (not passed from/to each other), we have all been tested at least 3 times and some people 4 times…we have never had a false positive result. Just seems sort of strange that that NFL, and now one team in particular, has 4 false positives in one round of testing.

  15. Yeaaaaaahhhh. The same front office that started de-flate gate in middle of a playoff game when the whole thing a nonissue. Tied up taxpayers money to higher courts and now want to trust what they say of ‘false positives’

  16. The rapid tests are low accuracy–exact numbers aren’t known but usually 90-95% for both positive and negative results. So you have some number of false positives as well as some number of false negatives.

as usual, posts lacking proper details. Errors in antigen testing are primarily false negative. It’s very likely these were PCR. And regarding the post about the media, they also won’t tell you that a true positive does not mean one is infectious.

Bingo! If the general public knew about all the manipulation of the numbers by city, state, and federal government agencies, the Healthcare industry and the media people would never believe anything they are tole rest of time. No worries, im pretty sure after the election all the fear mongers will realize the “pandemic” that has a 99.7% survival rate wasn’t such a big deal after all. No matter how much the MSM told them to cower in fear and stay in their basement.

Who is doing all this testing with so many blunders? Adam gase labs?

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

No. Nothing positive comes out of there.
