49ers climb back to .500 with 24-16 upset of Rams

The Rams have four victories. All four came against the NFC East.

Unfortunately for the Rams, they don’t play in the NFC East.

The Rams fell to 0-2 against teams outside the NFC East, losing 24-16 to the 49ers. San Francisco improved to 3-3 in the first of a brutal seven-game stretch.

The 49ers jumped out to a 21-6 halftime lead and held on without running back Raheem Mostert, who left with an ankle injury after one carry in the second half.

After the two-minute warning, Deebo Samuel took a flip pass from Jimmy Garoppolo that was more a rush than a catch and picked up 11 yards on third-and-seven to ensure the Rams wouldn’t see the ball again.

Garoppolo, who rebounded from last week when he lasted only 31 plays because of his ankle injury, went 23-of-33 for 268 yards and three touchdowns. George Kittle had seven catches for 109 yards and a touchdown, and Samuel made six receptions for 66 yards and a score.

The biggest plays of the game came late in the third quarter after the Rams reached the San Francisco 2. On third down, Cooper Kupp dropped what should have been a touchdown pass from Jared Goff.

The Rams elected to go for it on fourth down, and Goff’s pass, intended for Josh Reynolds, was picked by Jason Verrett. It was Verrett’s first interception since Sept. 11, 2016, against Alex Smith and the Chiefs.

Goff finished 19-of-38 for 198 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.

After making four sacks last season, Aaron Donald had only two tackles and a quarterback hit.

  1. Bounce back game.

What a tremendous effort by all three phases. All the Jimmy G haters can suck it, he performed exactly as expected. Despite all the doom and gloom the banged up Niners went toe to toe with a playoff caliber and division foe. The next 6 games are a gauntlet and I’d be happy if they went 3-3 but even when that clock runs out I’ll always be Faithful.

    GO NINERS!!!!!

  2. Rumors of the 49ers demise have indeed been greatly exaggerated. Rams and Seahawks will continue to be little brother this year.

    GO NINERS!

  3. 49ers lost to a team that surprised them as not as bad as advertised last week. Beat a good team this week. Probably thanks to Jimmy actually looking healthy this week.

1-0 on this so called “gauntlet”

You’re not good at math, are you?

  5. Shanahan called a great game tonight. Still would have liked to see deebo get more touches and put him in some space. Also thought they under used Aiyuk as well. Gotta get the ball into the hands of these dynamic players. All in all good win tonight.

  6. 49’ers in an “Upset” of the RAMS? Didn’t they just make the SB last year? Seahawks now 2 losses ahead in the ‘toughest division in the NLF’. Seahawks didn’t have a down year after they were in the SB and they lost most of the fabulous D after the New England game.
I know, I know, you all can’t have Russell Wilson in command.

Apparently rumors of the niners turning their season around have also been greatly exaggerated as well. Niners beat a team who only has wins vs teams with losing records and 2 of the niners wins came against arguably the 2 worst teams in the league. But yea, your season is saved!

  8. What is worse is the score really flattered the Rams.

They have no pass rush if Aaron Donald is managed. None.

Combine that with the ridiculous soft coverage the Rams keep playing and it was a recipe for disaster that the whiners were good enough to grasp.

Fortunately, Garoppola is still a horribly inaccurate QB past 10 yards, otherwise they could have really run up a score.

  9. Was surprised that 9ers won since they were so short handed (Bosa, Sherman, etc). Was really surprised that McVay called two passing plays when Rams were on 9ers one yard line since Collinsworth was extolling the Rams O-line and they had had success running the ball. Both QBs missed a lot of open receivers.

  10. “Great win Niners, although I hate both the Niners and the Rams.”

Any loyal Seahawks fan should hate division rivals. I’m looking forward to the two Niner-Seahawk games. They are usually very entertaining.
