Mike Tomlin: Defense answered the challenge Sunday

The Steelers came into Sunday’s game with a 4-0 record, but they weren’t happy with the way their defense played late in last week’s win over the Eagles.

There wasn’t much to dislike about this week’s outing. They allowed the Browns 220 yards while intercepting Baker Mayfield twice and racking up four sacks in a 38-7 win that keeps them at the top of the AFC North.

Head coach Mike Tomlin called his team’s performance “varsity ball” after the game and specifically praised the way the defense kept the Browns from extending drives.

“Part of being good in this league is identifying problems and eliminating them, hopefully before they happen but once they happen you have to eliminate them quickly,” Tomlin said, via the team’s website. “We acknowledge that third down was an issue for us last week defensively. I thought they answered that challenge well and emphatically today. It was necessary to slow down a dangerous Browns attack, one that had been ringing up a bunch of points per game. Just can’t say enough about the effort all the way around in all three phases of the game.”

The Ravens had their own issues closing out the Eagles this Sunday and are up next for the Steelers.

  1. Stefanski got schooled by Mike Tomlin today. A veteran head coach/QB combo will more often win against a first time head coach/young QB combo.

  2. Ben didn’t have a great day, but he’s been great this season with his ball protection. When Pittsburgh wins the turnover battle they can be very difficult to slow down. James Washington was the wr who came up biggest today, Pittsburgh can clearly draft those really well. Two tough games with the Titans and Ravens coming up, so they have to keep it up every week.

    Go Steelers!

I believe it’s the Titans next, then the Ravens

You’re correct. It was originally supposed to be Steelers vs. Ravens in Week 7 with both teams having a bye Week 8. Due to the Steelers vs. Titans postponement to Week 7, the Ravens now have their bye Week 7 and play the Steelers Week 8. The Steelers had Week 4 as their “bye.”

  4. The Steelers were still salty over the bush league Myles Garret helmet-swing of last year. They were motivated and happy to send Cleveland back to the kiddie table. Loved seeing OBJ remove his shoes in typical pouty fashion…and his rookie coach attempt to defend him.
