Adam Gase: No great answer on Sam Darnold’s return

Many people wondered if the Jets might fire Adam Gase after falling to 0-6 with a 24-0 loss to the Dolphins on Sunday, but it doesn’t appear that the latest lopsided defeat has shaken the team’s faith in their head coach.

Gase met with the media as scheduled on Monday afternoon and it was business as usual rather than a moment for a farewell address. Gase said he’s spoken to CEO Christopher Johnson since the loss and expects to speak to him again on Monday as part of their regular routine.

When he does, it doesn’t sound like they’ll be discussing quarterback Sam Darnold‘s return to the lineup. Darnold missed his second game with a right shoulder injury on Sunday and Gase offered no timetable for when he might be back in action.

“I don’t have a great answer for you on that one. . . . We’re progressing in the right direction,” Gase said, via Ralph Vacchiano of SNY.

If Darnold does miss the Week Seven game against the Bills, it will be the ninth missed game in the first 39 games of his NFL career. Joe Flacco was 21-of-44 for 186 yards and an interception in the loss to Miami.

  1. In other words, the Jets are desperately trying to trade Darnold, and won’t play him until they’ve completely exhausted that option.

  2. It’s not Darnold fault he has missed nine games, he has no offensive line. I wouldn’t fire Gase, not now anyway. Why give him the easy way out. Make him suffer with the rest of the team.

  3. Worst coach of all All-time?

    Hue Jackson vs Adam Gase
    Any other contenders?

Rod Maranelli piloted the Lions to their legendary 0-16 campaign in 2008. Gotta give him the nod over Hue just because he was the first to pull it off. Patricia could match him if they let him hang around long enough.

  4. Are some of you kidding me with this thread? Sam Darnold has been running for his life for 3 years now. If he were on even an average or good offensive team with a good offensive line to protect him, this kid would be producing at a high level. I’m a Jets fan and I’ll concede the god-awfulness of his offensive line and offensive talent around him since he’s been with the Jets. John Idzik and Mike Maccagnan be damned. Give me a break!

    In better words, FAKE NEWS.

ZERO evidence they are trying to trade Darnold.

    Tanking for Trevor.

It’s not tanking when you are the worst team in the league. Tanking infers a team is purposely doing what they can to lose so their draft position is protected.

The JETs are as bad as their record says they are.

You must be very young or older with a bad memory.

None of these guys come close to being the GOAT of bad head coaches.
