Ezekiel Elliott on his two fumbles: I’m sorry; this one is on me

USA TODAY Sports

The Cowboys didn’t have Dak Prescott and his 371.2 passing yards per game.

And Ezekiel Elliott‘s two fumbles — which came in a three-play span in the second quarter — got the Cowboys in a hole they couldn’t dig out of without their star quarterback.

“I don’t think we can use that as an excuse,” Elliott said of playing without Prescott. “I’m just going to keep saying it over and over. I started the game out with two fumbles, gave the ball away and that gave them all the momentum they needed to go and take off. I want to say I’m sorry, and this one is one me. I need to be better for this team.”

The Cardinals used Elliott’s two fumbles for touchdown drives of 54 and 27 yards and a 14-0 lead.

Elliott now has five fumbles this season, losing four. No other running back even has three.

Elliott said he has worked on keeping the ball tight in practice. It obviously hasn’t worked, and he conceded, “I need to figure something out.”

Elliott has never lost two fumbles in a game or more than two fumbles in a season.

“Honestly, I can’t really even…,” Elliott said, not finishing the sentence. “I don’t know why. I’ve got to be better with it.”

Elliott stayed on the sideline the next time the Cowboys got the ball after his second fumble, with Tony Pollard replacing him.

“Zeke is our bell cow, and we need to get it right,” Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy said. “He’s part of the plan. He’s going to be part of our success. So, we have to get it right. We have to take care of the football. That’s for everybody that touches the football on our team.”

Elliott finished with a season-low 12 carries and 49 yards and has gone six games without a 100-yard game, the longest stretch without one in his career.

“I think it was me,” Elliott said. “I’m supposed to be a guy that this team can rely on. I’m supposed to be a guy that this team can lean on when times get rough. I just wasn’t that today. I got us started off to a terrible start. . . . I killed our momentum. I can’t do that. I can’t.”

The Cowboys have 15 giveaways and three takeaways for an NFL-worst minus-12 turnover ratio.

  1. So, the two fumbles led to 14 points. The Cards won by 28. It wasnt totally on him. The Cowboys were thoroughly dominated.

  2. Jerruh cannot be pleased. We need a good Jerruh rant. And does Mike McCarthy get a 2nd season in Big D? I say yes but time will tell.

  3. I love the Cowboys fans blaming injuries. Especially when the eagles will only have 2 starters on offense on Thursday. They are playing 3rd string tackles on both sides and a 3rd string guard. It’s not even close when you compare the two teams and what they’ve lost.

This is also what happens when you put all of your stock into your offensive skill positions and then say “whats with this defense?”

Nfl thinks ratings are bad now wait until fhey loose the cowboys fans

    2 10 Rate This

All 7 of them? Oh and it’s lose, not loose.

  5. Amazing how after they gave him that big contract he can’t seem to hold on to the ball anymore.

  6. Zeke hasn’t played as well since he got his big contract. His fumbles put them in a hole, but their defense is atrocious. The winner of the NFC East may only have 6 wins at this rate.

  7. All I can say is the Bearded Woman Beater has earned the contempt he is now feeling. You are worthless and disgusting. You reaped this harvest and you should be removed from the sport for being an extortionist and a weak player.

  8. I used to play and will tell you part of the issue for his fumbling was the long sleeve shirt he was wearing underneath his jersey. Once the ball presses against the shirt it becomes the weak point of the hold and can easily be fumbled. I tried a shirt 1 time and took it off after fumbling twice as well when I had not fumbled the entire season.Lose the undershirt Zeke.

  9. In other words, Zeke Elliott is no Emmitt Smith.

When Tony Dorsett was having troubles securing the ball, Tom Landry gave him a football and told him if he was ever seen without in his hands, including in the shower, he would be fined $50. Every time.

That sure solved Dorsett’s problem with ball security, and that’s coaching.

McCarthy is incapable of that. Elliott has “FEED ME” tattooed on his stomach. Why, so you can cough it up? Pollard is better at ball security than him.

Dalton is a good enough quarterback; he just needs more practice and game time to get into a rhythm.

It’s this defense that is going to kill Dallas. Good grief, New York was averaging 12 points a game before they met Dallas, and they put up 35 points! Arizona put up 38. Nolan sucks.

Prescott could at least win games in a shoot-out, but he’s out for the season. It’s all on Elliott now; he’s got his mega-contract, but he can’t hold on to the ball?

These Dallas Cowboys are on the long way down. They won’t be relevant again for at least a decade.

  10. It wasn’t all Zeke but the two fumbles opened the flood gates and yeah injuries do matter a little when since last season you lost Travis Frederick, Tyrone Smith, LaEl Collins, and last night Zack Martin. That’s every good offensive lineman you had. Also this defense is garbage.

  11. Cowboys need to take a couple days off, unwind in their White House, have some snowfall, libations, some Ft. Worth women……….dey be OK, dadgum it!

  12. It amazes me that Andy Dalton has stayed in the league so long, he has always been a below average QB, and he showed again last night against the Cards; some things never change.

  13. At least Elliott was honest about his bumbling, er, I mean fumbling. And with that horrid Defense the Boys are in for a longggg season of losing. Go elsewhere, Dak. Bail while you can.

  14. He will not fumble nor will the QB stink against Washington next week.

Signed the Washington Football Team Fan base. We suck.

  15. I think the tattoo guy used that special slippery ink when he did Elliott’s ridiculous tattoo. Must be an Iggles fan…

  16. Dallas defense has now given up 218 Points (36.3 PPG), shattering the team record for most points allowed after 6 games. Any discussion of the Cowboys problems this year can begin and end with the defense.

  17. Zeke, this is on Andy too. OMG, he looked worse than Brian Hoyer when he got in a few weeks ago.
And the Cards are no joke this year. Kyler wears rocket shoes. My first exposure to him last night, and wow, speedy little dude.

  18. i’m surprised Zeke didn’t take off that stupid blue long-sleeve shirt after the first fumble. doesn’t have the grip that skin has

  19. As Dartmouth notes…. Go see Tiki Barber! High and tight is your answer and two hands in the crowds.

  20. Almost after the fact, looked like the Cowboys tanked the game to say “see how important Dak is, give him his big money now or lose him to free agency”. They could tag him next year but the effort or lack of last night makes you wonder cause they did nothing right.

  21. Andy Dalton was one of the most over rated QB’s ever. Cinn kept saying, wait til he gets more experience. He always tanked in big games always and led Cinn to nowwhere land for a decade. Why would fans expect any better performance from this guy?

  22. “Once the ball presses against the shirt it becomes the weak point of the hold and can easily be fumbled. I tried a shirt 1 time and took it off after fumbling twice as well when I had not fumbled the entire season.Lose the undershirt Zeke.”
    ____________

Particularly weird he wears that playing in a warm weather city. Not like it’s the frozen tundra.

  23. I used to play and will tell you part of the issue for his fumbling was the long sleeve shirt he was wearing underneath his jersey. I hear you on this, but you gotta admit those turf burns hurt like a so-in-so. I know it’s all field-turf nowadays so it may be different than the old astroturf used to be, but some of those slides on astroturf would leave scars that took years to get rid of.

  24. At least theres a high probability of two nfc East teams winning this week. If either end in a tie, I think we might all just give up on 2020…

  25. .Lose the undershirt Zeke
    ‐‐————–,——-,–,—
Makes sense to me. I wonder if any Cowboy personal come to the board for helpful hints?….msybe they should.

  26. Zeke is one more bad game from claiming he’s got a “groin” or “hamstring” injury.

  27. To quote Todd Hailey “Two hands Dwayne! TWO HANDS!”(While yelling at Dwayne Bowe for dropping a pass)

BTW respect to Zeke for taking the responsibility.

  28. I understand Cowboys fans going off on Zeke, he deserves it after last night. However, notice this; when McCarthy was the coach in Green Bay Aaron Jones was a shared backfield running back. As soon as McCarthy left Jones became one of the best running backs in the league. Before McCarthy, Zeke was considered an elite running back, since McCarthy has taken over he’s now in a timeshare and an average running back. Coincidence? I think not.

  29. Not a fan at all but he needs to stop wearing long sleeves.. Anyone who’s carried a ball knows it’s harder to hang on to it with long sleeves. He was the only guy on offense with them. One fumble clearly slipped from his arms with just a little tug..

  30. Jerry never says a word about this player but one who has not played give him the thumbs down in Dalton.

  31. His best days are in the rear view mirror. Horrible signing to an extension. Pollard is just as good and cheaper. The Cowboys in total decline , again.

  32. Typical I got my money now I don’t have to work. He has been terrible and very costly to his teams results. Along with a very very bad defense. The defense was terrible last year, so the Zeke thing is new.
