Patriots brace for diverse 49ers running game

The Patriots are reeling. The 49ers were reeling. When the two teams meet this weekend, the 49ers will be running.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick knows what’s coming, and he offered up from praise for the San Francisco ground game on Tuesday.

“Yeah, they get everybody involved in the running game,” Belichick said. “They hand it to tight ends, receivers, backs. They run multiple personnel groupings with the fullback, with no fullback, with three receivers, two receivers. So they give you a lot of different looks.

“They’re very well-coached, they have a good scheme, they’re sound, they are fundamentally very good. Coach [Kyle] Shanahan does a great job of attacking defenses by creating formations and conflicts that are hard defensively and he can take advantage of them in a number of different ways, and then of course they make some big plays in the passing game, as well, by setting up those things in the running game.

“They’re well-coached, they’re very good fundamentally, they have an explosive group of players and they put pressure on you across the board. Certainly, the receivers carrying the ball is something that you’ve got to defend, but there’s a lot of other things you’ve got to defend, too, so that’s the whole problem with San Francisco is it’s not stopping one guy or one play or one player. It’s about being able to play good team defense and everybody’s got to hold up and do their job, and that’s challenging at all the positions — quarterback, tight end, running back, wide receiver and a good offensive line, and as I said, very well-coached. You can see why they won the NFC last year. Offensively, they’ve got a strong group.”

Yes they are, and they showed it again on Sunday night, with a win over the Rams. The question is whether they can make it two in a row, and whether the Patriots can stop their losing streak at two.

  1. Patriots brace? Laughable. Phillip Lindsey ran for over 100 yds against them. What do you think Mostert will do?

  2. Mostert isn’t playing, McKinnon is a below-replacement level RB. If Shanahan doesn’t wake up to that fact, it will be a long day for the 49ers. 49ers rookie Hasty looks good, hopefully he will get the majority of the snaps until Coleman comes back.

    Nothing because he’s hurt. lol

Who cares if Lindsay had 100 yards? NE couldn’t move the ball offensively.

BB chooses one aspect to take away and NE did that vs Lock and the receivers. NE allowed 18 points with no offense to do anything. The concern is offense not defense for NE.

The D graded out very well on Sunday yet again with no offensive help due to atrocious playcalling and personnel deployment by McDaniels and simply poor qb play and mechanics from
    Newton.

What game were you watching? For the majority of the game the Patriots Defense couldn’t get off the field. They allowed the Broncos to score on their first four possessions. They also gave up a first down on 3rd and 21!!! And this was all to a 1-win team.

Take off your homer glasses and live in reality man.

    I agree.

Run-game-wise it’s more of a Hasty/Juzscyk and Deebo factor than it is McKinnon. The latter doesn’t look the same at all.

The question is, how BB defends all of that because Jimmy has to have a good run game to be Jimmy.

If they can minimize that, they will be fine on D.

    Lie.

Their 3rd down D was outstanding again and their red zone d, which wasn’t needed much outside of a chintzy call on Gilmore, meant 50+ yard fgs from McManus.

If you had told me Denver could only kick fgs, I would have said NE would win the game going away. Anyone who watched that saw a putrid offense lef by Covid Cam.

Almost Sidham time if he keeps it up.

Only a complete moron who glosses over bad offense in an easy offensive league with holding calls down by 60%, would come to your pathetic conclusion. The D hadn’t practiced and didn’t have Cowart or Butler available either. You’re a liar.

NE also had 2 ints by arguably the 2 best cbs playing in the nfl right now.

  10. It ain’t the defense, or the play calling of the QB. The WRs and TEs are the worst group in the NFL. It’s a joke. Screens and gadget plays are all McDaniels can call. Nobody is open downfield. That’s on Belichick. Meanwhile, in TBay…
