The Vikings released center Brett Jones on Tuesday, the team announced.

Jones played 18 snaps on special teams in five games with the Vikings this season. He signed Sept. 18 after an injury to guard Pat Elflein, whom the Vikings designated to return to practice Monday.

Elflein underwent surgery to repair a torn thumb ligament.

Jones had an offer to join Seattle’s practice squad, according to Chris Tomasson of the Pioneer Press, but Jones elected instead to remain with the Vikings. He will sign with their practice squad Wednesdya, his second stint on their practice squad this season.

Jones, 29, played 16 games for the Vikings in 2018-19 after a trade from the Giants.

He played 30 games, with 14 starts, in two seasons with the Giants after two seasons with the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League.

The Vikings also announced Tuesday they cut linebacker Cale Garrett from the practice squad. They signed cornerback Marcus Sayles to take Garrett’s spot on the practice squad.

Minnesota protected kicker Chase McLaughlin on its practice squad this week, preventing another team from signing him.

  1. Lol he’s probably their best interior lineman but the inept GM and coaching staff seem to think Elflein or Samia will eventually learn how to block someone despite it never happening.

  2. Brett Jones is terrible. The Vikings have the worst guards in the NFL and have gone through several of them already this season, and Jones wasn’t even given a chance.

  3. You know what, he was probably the best of the guards on the team and he never got a chance. I hope he lands somewhere he gets a chance to play. And I hope he plays great and calls attention to the monkey dance that is the Vikings o-line coaching process.

  4. I think the Vikings cutting and resigning of Brett Jones is a quarterly requirement at this point.

  5. Saying Brett Jones sucks is proof you don’t actually watch football. The Vikings best guard according to PFF last year was Josh Klein and they cut him. Zimmer and Speilman have an obsession with players they draft that isn’t based in reality. If you think Elflein is better than Brett Jones, I have a bridge to sell you.

Brett Jones hasn’t played since the third game of the 2018 season. He started the first three games because Elflein was hurt. If he was so much better than Elflein, he would have gotten another opportunity at some point.
