Report: Packers have interest in Texans WR Will Fuller

With the trade deadline approaching and, as a practical matter, the trade deadline imminent for teams that hope to have any new players on the field in Week Nine, a former first-round receiver is drawing interest.

According to Aaron Reiss of TheAthletic.com, multiple teams have inquired about Texans receiver Will Fuller. One of those teams, per the report, is the Packers.

Fuller was the first of three straight receivers taken in the 2016 draft from picks 21 through 23; the other two (Josh Doctson of Washington and Laquon Treadwell of the Vikings) are out of the league.

Fuller currently is in the option year of his rookie contract, at a salary of $10.162 million.

Reiss explains that the Texans aren’t interested in a fire sale, and that they won’t trade just to trade. That’s what they have to say to maximize leverage, especially if only the Packers have significant interest.

The Texans have been criticized for doing bad deals in recent years. Currently, their interim General Manager is executive V.P. of football operations Jack Easterby, who has limited (if any) qualifications for or experience in matters of this nature. That could cause other teams to try to take advantage of the Texans.

It also could make Easterby leering about doing any deals, for fear of being taken advantage of.

Packers coach Matt LaFleur was the quarterbacks coach at Notre Dame in 2014, one of the three years that Fuller played for college football there.

Fuller’s value could be hard to gauge, given that he’s one half of a season away from becoming a free agent. Last year, the Broncos got a third-round pick for Emmanuel Sanders from the 49ers; Sanders left San Francisco earlier this year, after his contract expired.

For the Texans, the first question is whether they want Fuller beyond 2020. The next question becomes whether they want to try to get value for him now or whether they want to let him leave in free agency, enhancing the team’s potential collection of compensatory draft picks in 2022.

  1. Makes sense, I don’t expect Fuller to be a lifelong Texan.
Has any of their players been lifelong Texans?
    Maybe Brian Cushing?

  2. thank god BOB aint still the GM, otherwise Fuller would be long gone by now, for a low price too

  3. Marquez Valdes-Scantling career averages – 32 rec, 516 yards, 16.1 yds/rec, 4 tds
    Fuller – 39 rec, 557 yards, 14.3 yds/rec, 4 tds

This guy is not an upgrade.

  4. Will Fuller will be a beast if he gets to work with Aaron Rogers. Rogers is much more accurate than Deshaun Watson. Look at he stats below:
    Watson:
Pct Yds TD Int Sck QBR
    Regular Season 69.5 2095 15 5 22 108.7
    Career 67.2 11811 86 34 147 102.3

    Rogers:
Pct Yds TD Int Sck QBR
    Regular Season 65.9 1657 17 2 7 113.4
    Career 64.6 48603 381 86 455 102.8

  5. I’d be surprised if they don’t trade him. Fuller has his moments when he can be good, but he’s wildly inconsistent and extremely injury prone. I don’t think the Texans will resign him next season, so they might as well get something for him.

  6. “Marquez Valdes-Scantling career averages – 32 rec, 516 yards, 16.1 yds/rec, 4 tds
    Fuller – 39 rec, 557 yards, 14.3 yds/rec, 4 tds

There you go – that’s the trade. Maybe a change of scenery would help them both.

  7. Absolutely embarrassing when the new GM is described as “[having] limited (if any) qualifications for or experience in matters of this nature” concerning personal moves and that is considered an upgrade over the previous GM.

  8. Ben there don that with this team. Probably more about sending a message to Scantling and St Brown, your days are soon over better get your bags ready to pack your leaving soon. Two busts the pack must own up to and just handle the truth.

  9. Not an upgrade?

    Valdez-Scantling Catch percentage 46.4%

    Will Fuller 69%

Doesnt matter – Not likely to happen.

  10. As a Texan fan letting him go for anything less than a 1st or 2nd is dumb. You’ll get a 3rd round compensatory pick if they let him walk in free agency. The problem is he’s not worth a first or a second. So I would be shocked if Fuller gets moved. Then again it’s the Texans they’ll probably trade him for a back up janitor and a hand shack. And I’m a Texan fan

Will fuller through 7 games in 2020:

    31 rec, 490 yards, 5 TD

I am no math major, but if he plays just 14 games, that’s 62/960/10. This is his current value. Career averages are meaningless when assessing 2020 value.

  12. We could use some help – help in the form of a real stud linebacker – Is Sean Lee ready to play – Mingo from Houston has some gas left. Or maybe Kerrigan – this is our weakness – much more than the receivers – especially with Lazard coming back. Time to stop the TT approach of doing nothing – Seattle and others are beefing up – We have good running backs – we have good offensive schemes and players – our Dbacks can play but we can be exposed in the running game. Add some depth and meanness in the middle. Pullease

  13. MVS can not be trusted at all – had 2 bad drops in Houston. Need another piece. Fuller fits the bill. Gotta make it happen.

  14. The Packers perhaps thought O’Brian was still their so they could get Fuller and Texans first round draft pick in 2021 for the rights to Donald Driver.

hasnt had aaron rodgers throwing to him. He also had Hop on the other side before this year. The only concern they should have is can he stay healthy.

  17. Absolutely embarrassing when the new GM is described as “[having] limited (if any) qualifications for or experience in matters of this nature” concerning personnel moves and that is considered an upgrade over the previous GM.

  18. If Fuller is lucky, he gets traded somewhere with a quarterback. If he were to finish his contract in Green Bay, his next deal will be many million of dollars richer than if he finishes out in Houston. Fuller hopes he gets to catch passes from a thrower like Rodgers.

  19. I have heard the Packers “inquired” about Fuller, but the personnel dept. inquires about multiple players every week. Making a call and finding out if a player is available is not a team expressing “interest” in said player. I personally have no interest in giving up a high draft pick for a player that the Packers probably won’t sign long term after this season. I’d rather pay Bakh, Jonesy, and Corey than this clown.

It is possible the Packers are interested in Fuller, but the Packers have not expressed that as of now. Tuesday is trade deadline so we will see. Lazard being back makes this even less likely, but stay tuned and find out what happens.

  20. Thankfully the Packers have demonstrated very good depth at nearly all positions, especially OL, RB, and WR.

  21. Why would the Packers be interested in a half year rental whos stats are the same as what they already have at reciever.Fuller will be looking for big money next year and the Packers have to get new deals with four or five of their starters next year just to keep being competitive.

  22. The Niners gave up a No. 3 and a No. 4 to rent Sanders last year.

Since it’s the Texans, the Packers will probably have to give up a conditional seventh rounder. 🙂

  23. Who starts these goofy rumors? Sure trade for a WR that will need a new contract after this season while you have players already on the team that are due for contracts. Expect the WR to learn a new system and earn Rodgers trust in a few weeks so the team can benefit down the stretch. But hey if you want to light a fire under current employees rears, let them think they are in danger of being replaced.

He’s also constantly on the injured list with soft tissue injuries. He’s never played a full season, he has issues with drops at crucial moments, and basically he’s a Desean Jackson with more drop issues.
