Avery Williamson celebrates his trade from Jets to Steelers

In August, the Jets did veteran linebacker Avery Williamson no favors, squeezing him into taking a pay cut a year after suffering a torn ACL. On November 1, the Jets did him a huge favor, sending Williamson from at the time the only NFL team without a win to the only NFL team without a loss.

As expected, Williamson is happy about the development.

Goin’ to the ‘Burgh!” he said in a video posted on Instagram. “Goin’ to the ‘Burgh! Let’s go man. Get me to the airport. We’re gonna get that ring. . . . Pittsburgh, let’s go man. I’m hyped. I’m so hyped, I couldn’t even sleep. Couldn’t even sleep last night. You know me; I’m a baller, now. I’m ready to go hit shit, man. Let’s go. I can’t wait to be part of this defense.”

The trade is official, pending a physical. Both teams have announced the transaction that will result in the Steelers getting Williamson and a seventh-round pick from the Jets in 2022 for a fifth-round pick in 2022.

  1. Great optics: “we’re gonna get that ring,” when *they* have beaten everyone on the way to a 7-0 record, and *he* is coming from an 0-8 mop team.

  2. You wanted out? Fine. Kinda understandable with a team that’s 0 – 7. But screw that overly delriously happy routine. You’re showing what true character you had while playing for the Jets. Being a winless team tests the true character of the players on that team, as well as the true character of that team’s fans. Williamson, in my opinion, showed his true character by obviously making it clear he wanted out. So I say don’t let the door kick you in the you-know-what. And I hope Douglas continues to clear out his type of player.

  3. Getting traded from the worst team in the league to one of the best has to feel like winning the Powerball lottery.

  4. He can be excited. He is going to a winner- he basically hit the lottery. PLus if he plays well he could make the team next year.

It is important to note the timing here. Did Williamson say or do anything to indicate he wanted out *before* the trade? If not, celebrating *after* the deal was done is perfectly appropriate and is not an indication of poor character.

  6. Maybe he should be more worried about making a contribution. He’s not going to be a starter and if he doesn’t play well the Steelers are going to wish they hadn’t traded for him.

I looked at his stats. It looks like he has been productive but it doesn’t look like he’s much of a force on passing downs.

  7. Big Ben over Scam any day. Also Steelers have a chance to get to the Super Bowl…the Pats…..please child quit dreaming.

  8. The Steelers have a legit shot. But Big Ben needs to get a couple weeks off in say week 15 and 16 to rest his shoulder a-la Elway in his last Super Bowl season.
