Chan Gailey: Tua Tagovailoa will get better and better, he just needs reps

Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa‘s first start for the Dolphins didn’t set the world on fire.

The Dolphins kept things conservative on offense early, dialed things back even further once they went up 28-7 on the Rams and wound up 28-17 winners in Tagovailoa’s debut. Head coach Brian Flores said there are “a lot of things we can get fixed” after Tagovailoa went 12-of-23 for 93 yards, a touchdown and a lost fumble on a sack.

Flores said he hopes to see improvement against the Cardinals this week and offensive coordinator Chan Gailey explained Tuesday why he thinks Flores will get what he wants. He said “the game starts to slow down” for young quarterbacks when they have more experience under their belts and that’s the best thing Tagovailoa could take from his debut.

“He needs reps. He’s just gotta keep working timing with these guys and keep getting reps,” Gailey said, via Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald. “Those reps that he got the other day were invaluable and I think he’ll start to get better in bigger jumps as we go forward because the more he sees, the more he understands, the more feel he gets with the receivers, I think he’ll get better and better. He just needs to play. He’s got a lot of talent. I’m anxious to see what steps he’s going to take this week.”

The Dolphins forced four turnovers and scored touchdowns on defense and special teams against the Rams, so they didn’t have to ask the rookie for much in his debut. That’s unlikely to be the case every week and Gailey won’t be the only person in the organization anxious to see what happens when they put more on his shoulders.

  1. Hard to follow a game plan when your defense and special teams won’t let you do much and give you a 28-7 lead. Of course you’ll dial it back a bit for a rookie QB. Plus, you were facing the best defensive player in the league. Don’t get him killed.

Next week will be very interesting…

  2. It is great that he will be playing chargers and Herbert soon. He didn’t look much different than Dallas’s new third stringer, who legit has the BS reps excuse old man Chan is peddling, in a game which was a dream scenario for a new QB, gift wrapped. Dolphins screwed this up when they blew chance to get 1st pick last year, that was their opportunity, that failure will be Flores legacy.

  3. One game into Tua’s career and the couch potatoes Einsteins utter their grand pronouncements of an utter failure. The Dolphins aren’t going anywhere this year so why not use it to prep for next season. As for coach Flores, he had the entire team playing hard, and mostly smart, football. Things are looking better for a franchise that had seen a lot of bad years.

  4. Herbert and Burrow have set the bar. I’m pulling for Tua but just based on what I saw I don’t think he’s going to achieve what they’re achieving. Those dudes are regularly throwing multi-TD and 300+ yard games.

  5. It never fails. One game in, & the sky is falling, they need a new QB, Tua isn’t the answer, etc. All of the couch GM’s out there have all the answers. Amazing. No vision. I remember Peyton’s 1st season tossing Int’s. I bet some here laughed at the Pats going with the 199th pick after Bledsoe got injured. It’s so easy to manage a $100 million + organization from your living rooms, isn’t it? After one, count it, 1 game. Amazing.

  6. Everybody that is arm chair quarterbacking needs to RELAX. Did you watch the game or just going by what the pundits are saying after one start????? Williams had 3 drops, one pass to the TE was perfectly defended, one over throw to the endzone, an errant throw to Parker on a screen, and a missed pass to Gaskin due to the rush in his face. All we heard leading up to the game was Donald, Donald, Donald… so of course the team was going to do what they could to protect him, with quick passes and etc.. The defense was so good that the offense became vanilla in a sense, why show something if you didn’t need to. The goal was to win the game, not go out there and drop back 61 times like Rams did. What do you want, Burrow and Herbert are putting up 300+ yards every game, because they need to, and what are their records as starters 2-5-1 and 2-6 respectively. Meanwhile Tua is 1-0, what matters more yards or wins????

  7. We got a very small sample size from Tua on Sunday. I thought he did good for his first ever start against a formidable defense. He did have four drops. He had some good throws that were completed and a really well placed 50/50 ball to Gesicki that he couldn’t come down with. One thing that was clear is he is very accurate with his throws. People want to hate on him and that’s fine. I’m willing to give him more time before I give have an opinion on whether or not I believe he could be their franchise quarterback.

Did you watch the game? The defense and ST plays were only TWO plays.. Miami had 143 yards of offense, ran 47 plays and only held the ball for 23:00. Flores had totally ignored the offense, especially the running game. Tua is not the answer… Period

  9. What really frosted my biscuit Sunday was the fact that Tua would string 2 or 3 good plays together and then Gailey would call up an off the wall gadget play, taking the ball out of Tua’s hands. It’s like they were telling him, “we really don’t trust you at all with the football, so split out wide left and we’ll let the guy that hasn’t ever played a down in the NFL take the center snap”.

The way a young QB gains experience and confidence is when you let him play football. Let him run the offense, let him take all the snaps and do all the ball movement. All the stupid gadget plays did was ensure that Tua’s confidence and experience level will run stagnant until Gailey FINALLY trusts him to run the offense. They never let him get any momentum going.

Let the kid string an entire series on his own instead of running the wildcat and triple reverses and other nonsense plays. Especially against the Rams defense, are you nuts Mr. Gailey?
