Giants deactivate Golden Tate

The Giants have had enough of Golden Tate.

Tate, the wide receiver who has been complaining about not getting the ball more, won’t be getting the ball at all on Sunday because he won’t be playing.

The Giants announced today that Tate is not accompanying the team on its trip to Washington and will not play in tomorrow’s game. It’s apparently a disciplinary measure because of Tate’s public complaining.

It remains to be seen whether Tate can get back in the Giants’ good graces, or whether he might be released before the season is over — a move that Tate might welcome, and that might result in some playoff contender picking up a veteran receiver who can help, and who may be a happier camper on a good team.

  1. I like it. It’s Joe judge showing the team that not one single person is above the collective. Being a new coach he has to set those boundaries and stick with it. Set the tone. Set the example.

  2. He’s open consistently, they’re either choosing not to go to him or the QB is incapable. They should’ve traded him when they had the chance, now they’re paying him big money for nothing and look stupid.

  3. He’ll be realeased soon thanks to his big mouth wife and himself. Maybe he can grab some doughnuts on the way out of NY?

  4. I imagine that Tate wanted to be traded and I can not comprehend how the Giants would not have been able to move him for a late draft choice or better. There are playoff competitive teams that badly need a quality receiver, Green Bay jumps out. Hell yes, Tate has been ticked off at not being a bigger part of the Giants–can anyone really blame him? The dude can still play, if motivated. And he sure seems motivated.

  5. He was the Seahawks leading receiver, had a good connection with Russell Wilson, and the ‘Hawks chose not to re-sign him. Any questions?

  6. “He was the Seahawks leading receiver, had a good connection with Russell Wilson, and the ‘Hawks chose not to re-sign him. Any questions?”

No questions, just observation. He would have come at a huge price tag. Seattle still had a spectacular Doug baldwin to take care of and a young fellow named Locket. They also were in midst of upgrading Wilson’s contract. That Tate commanded $$ they didn’t have did not mean he wasn’t worth that $$, it only means that he wasn’t worth that $$ to Seattle at that time. Seems that was a sound decision by Seattle, but sure not a refection on Tate as much as a reflection on $$.

  7. This was simply a stupid marriage from the beginning. Tate and agent took the best $$ to play for a rookie hc and a raw quarterback who is a long way from NFL ready and is a lot closer to becoming Josh Rosen than to be becoming Pat Mahomes. But that was then, now is now. Plenty of teams can use him if not a drain on the $$.

  8. Guy’s with poor ‘teammate skills” tend to get kicked around to many different teams before they are so toxic nobody wants them. My eyes are now on Dez Bryant in Baltimore. I hope he can finally be a TEAM guy and play to his full potential once again and has evolved.

  9. Tate is the type that needs to be ensured of either a highlight or game stat leader regardless if the team wins or loses. He has ability and talent but his ego is a tad bigger and eventually will create the same issue anywhere and everywhere.

  10. The squeaky wheel gets the grease, but sometimes it’s better just to change the tire. Couldn’t the Giants just placate him by buying him a box of maple bars?

  11. guys like this and TO and AB that bounce from team to team tells you all you need to know about them. cancers that eat at the team from the inside out. and can someone please explain why it’s ALWAYS the wide receivers?

  12. Maybe the Eagles can take Tate off their hands and the Giants can take Alshon Jeffrey off the Eagles hands. That sounds like a fair swap of malcontents to me.

  13. as i said when he got in the fight with ramsey, this guy is toast. detroit figured it out, and peddled him off to the eagles. they overpaid for him, and regretted it. gettleman being clueless then picked him up only to learn the same thing. then he probably did try to move him and got nobody willing to pay him.

and if you’re toast as a player and also a bum in the locker room they leave you off the plane. i’m sure they would release him if he would agree to give back the salary he would be due, but why would they just let him get paid again by someone else?

  14. “had a good connection with Russell Wilson.”

Unfortunately, Russell Wilson isn’t the only one he had a connection with.

    ________

No he isn’t. He barely gets any separation anymore. He’s good at coming down with contested throws, but he isn’t a good route runner and doesn’t have the speed to be as good after the catch as he once was.

  16. If they can suspend him for conduct detrimental, that will likely void any future guarantees. Then they can cut him without owing him any additional salary. Deactivating him is the first step in the process.

  17. Golden Tate should ask Brent Grimes and Colin Kaepernick how well it works out when your girl starts running her mouth about the team on social media.

  18. A desperate Belichick picks up just the sort of guy he likes to throw at the wall and see if he sticks. Maybe he comes into his own, or maybe he cant learn the system, has attitude, and flames out. But however it came out its the sort of thing BB would try. Especially when his situation on WR has turned a bit desperate to where he could use a good hail Mary.

  19. we don’t need this clown, when a guy bounces around like he has recently it speaks more about the player than the team…i hope we keep him on the bench just so he can’t sulk his way on to a playoff team

  20. “He was the Seahawks leading receiver, had a good connection with Russell Wilson, and the ‘Hawks chose not to re-sign him. Any questions?”
_______________________________________________________________________________________I believe the Seahawks chose not to resign him because he slept with Russell Wilson’s girlfriend. Wilson leveled up and Golden Tate has spent the rest of career on losing teams.

  21. “Dudes always been about himself.”

The likes are sky high on this comment but I just wanted to point out that during his tenure in Detroit there was never a big public issue with Tate and the Lions got him at 5 years for $31m. By comparison for the last few years he was drastically outproducing his contract and never was there a public issue.

I do believe part of the reason he got shipped out was maybe not being the right personality fit for what the new coaching regime was looking for but as a fan I have nothing but appreciation for what he provided the Lions in his time there.

  22. Tate is talented & his real frustration is being on losing teams after leaving Seattle. He left Seattle after fighting with a couple players about his relationship with Russell’s first wife. It resulted in his departure and Russell’s divorce after only two years of marriage. It was back in the 2014 when Russ filed for divorce against his wife, Ashton. The reason for their divorce was widely speculated to be because of extramarital relationship of Ashton & Golden Tate. Tate denied the inappropriate relationship, but it ended up being the reason for his departure.

He has only broken 1 tackle out of his 29 catches this season. Read up, he was shopped, but nobody wanted to trade for him. Check the dead money as well. Take away almost half his salary for the games he has already played this season and you’re left with a savings of $1.5 million if you cut him. As a team owner, I’d rather see him deactivated every game for the rest of the season. Best money spent. QB incapable? Please check the stats on Clayton and Shepherd.

You do realize this is Tate’s second year with NYG, he was sought by Gettleman as a replacement for OBJ in the lineup, and he signed when Shurmur and Eli were head coach and starting QB, not Judge and Jones.

  25. How many teams does this guy need to be with before he starts to realize maybe it’s him? It’s always everyone else’s fault…
