Dalvin Cook and the Vikings destroy the Lions

Vikings running back Dalvin Cook has been unstoppable since returning from a groin injury last week.

Cook topped 200 yards from scrimmage in last week’s win over the Packers, then had 206 rushing yards and 46 receiving yards today in a 34-20 win over the Lions. The Lions’ defense was in shambles, and only had 10 players on the field on a 70-yard Cook touchdown run.

With Cook leading the way, the Vikings dominated, and the Lions’ defense could do nothing. This is Year 5 for Lions General Manager Bob Quinn and Year 3 for Lions head coach Matt Patricia, and all their talk about building a tough, physical defense has been exposed as just talk. The Vikings pushed them around all day today.

Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford had an ugly game after missing practice all week because he had close contact with someone who had COVID-19. He eventually got injured and replaced by Chase Daniel, who threw a touchdown pass, but only in garbage time.

The Lions seemed to want to get Adrian Peterson his first ever touchdown as a visitor in Minnesota, but he couldn’t do much. On one occasion Peterson got the ball at the 1-yard line but lost four yards on the play, and on another Stafford tried to force the ball to Peterson in the end zone when he wasn’t open.

It was a terrible game for Detroit, which drops to 3-5 and appears close to having to blow everything up and move on, perhaps without Quinn, Patricia or Stafford. This team is going nowhere.

The Vikings improved to 3-5 and are trying to dig their way out of a deep hole they fell in to start the season. It may be too late, but they’re playing good football at the season’s halfway point.

  1. Vikings played well today. It’s highly unlikely they make the playoffs, but they could save the jobs of Zimmer and Spielman – which is a mixed bag. Hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst.

  2. Mattison is a good backup but he can only dream of aj dillon’s 4.5+ 40 time. 😛

  3. Win or lose is always great playing detroit. Lions fans are class fans and great people.

  4. Man, I can’t believe that pretentious slob Patricia turned out to be a bad coach who was just riding on Belichick’s coattails.

  5. I dont wanna hear no more talk from Packers fans how great Aaron Jones is, nor how injury prone Cook is. Packers don’t have a running game and they can’t stop the run. One and done first round. Vikes prolly won’t make the playoffs but having a good running game opens up the passing game for your WRs.

Oh oopppps Packers didnt take a WR in the draft.

  6. Quinn and Patricia put the Lions in last place. No reason left not to fire them Monday morning. Nowhere to go but up, but with someone else.

  7. That’s good Ford family. Keep hanging on to a pathetic GM and head coach. What a joke organization…..

  9. I’m not sure why people think the Vikings can’t make the playoffs. They are a solid team overall with a much easier second half schedule. If they go 5-3 or better down the stretch they have a solid chance of making it in.

  10. Nobody should be surprised. Staff was out of practice on the Covid list for most of the week.

  11. hey how about Boyd at corner? It’s hard for a laymen to tell for sure, maybe he got a lot of help from the safeties, but he looked pretty solid. better than the exempt Holton Hill.

  12. Its time for Adrian Peterson to realize he will not be remember as the best RB in vikings history

  13. Rebuilding continues for Lions. Build around Swift, Golladay, Hockenson on offense. We need a new QB. Stafford is no longer the right Guy to lead Detroit. On defense I’d get rid of just about everyone aside from Okudah and Tracy Walker. Get pass rush and some LBs who can cover the RB out of backfield. Hopefully the next head coach and GM get it together.

    +++++

First the Packers ranked 10th in the NFL in rushing yards per game before games started. That is top third of the league, not exactly “don’t have a running game”.

Second Aaron Jones has exceeded Dalvin Cook’s yards per carry in all three of the previous seasons.

Third one and done in the playoffs is better than 7-9. Be happy about Dalvin Cook, he’s a world class running back. Too bad his organization decided to extend Kirk Cousins for two more seasons to save a marginal amount of money on this year’s cap due to eating Stefon Diggs and Xavier Rhodes contract. Big oops. SKOL!

Can anyone find the irony in this that a Packer fan rushes to a Vikings post to read all of the comments and reply?

  16. The “Packers can’t stop the run” but they were giving up 13 fewer yards per game than Minnesota coming in.

Is this where I demand I don’t want to hear no more talk about the Packers run defense?

Look no further than your boy cheesey picking an unnecessary fight with the Packers in post No.5 of this thread.

  18. I don’t care what the haters think the Minnesota Vikings are going to make the playoffs!

So you don’t get the humor in it. Packer fan criticizes a Vikings fan for paying attention to GB… while that Packer fan is doing the exact same thing by following and commenting negatively on every single Vikings post. Now, other Packer fans show up in droves trying to say that they don’t care, or are threatened by, the Vikings by commenting dozens of times on every single Vikings post.

    Get it now?

  20. Such a weird season for all the obvious reasons. Difficult to gauge the quality of a team this early in the season during a normal year, let alone this year.

It always looked like a “reloading” year for the Vikings even under the best of circumstances given the dramatic overhaul of the roster on the defensive side of the ball. Throw in a ton of injuries to defensive starters and what we’ve seen is that the young talent that’s been acquired the past few seasons in the draft has some real potential.

Perhaps the brightest spot if you’re a Vikings fan is that the draft capital invested into the offensive line is finally paying off. We’ve now seen the offensive line exert their will on a defense two weeks in a row. Granted, the Lions do not have a good defense but the packers d is at least average. Both weeks we’ve seen the offensive line dominate in the second half.

It will be very interesting watching this team over the next two seasons, especially if Spielman can continue to draft quality talent in the later rounds.

You sound confused on a number of things. First being that the Vikings played Detroit today, not GB, so why are you talking about the Packers? Second, we have a fantastic rb and a fine run game. Of course we have Rodgers behind center and not a scrub, so we aren’t a run first team but only a fool would say we can’t run.

  22. Vikings fans crowing here need to be reminded that beating the Lions is nothing to brag about, especially with Stafford sick and then injured. I can picture them winning 5, or even 6, of their next 8 games. But 9-7 won’t make the playoffs. They’ll have to be perfect for the rest of the year to make it into the tournament.

That scrub beat the Packers in Lamebeau. Fantastic RB? He’s not even in the top ten in rushing. The Packers are no where as good as the Bucs or the Seahawk. They are a Paper Lion and speaking of Lions weren’t the Packerscdown by 17 when they played and had to come back?. Minnesota dominated from the get go. Packer fans so delusional thiking the train is back on the rails after beating the 9ers junior varsity team. Not saying Vikes are gonna make a run at the play offs but its too easy to get your fan base riled. So whose living in whose head. Sometimes you have to pick your battles, why Packer fans even have to comment is beyond me. Guy trolls you about Jones and right away you lose it like a jealous ex girlfriend.

  24. So, are you purple turds all done with the whining about, Tanking for Trevor, like you were back in Week 3?
Congratulations, the Vikings pulled into a dead heat with the Lions for the NFC North cellar. *Slow Clap*
Hopefully your team will win a few more, maybe even scrape together a .500 record by season’s end.
Maybe even enough to trigger a few more extensions. 🤣
Hey, one can hope, right? 😉

I think only one person mentioned play offs. Beating the 9ers back ups is nothing to brag about either. Enjoy your last year with A A Ron.

  26. During a Vikings 70 yard TD run the Lions only had 10 men on the field! It happened TWICE last week as well! Pop Warner doesn’t have these problems. Fire all except our special teams coach.

  27. I just want the Vikings to make the playoffs and beat the Saints in another miracle ending… Everything after that is a bonus

  28. Wow packer fans have no civility or class. Just give credit where credit is due and move along.

Haha……..Packers have played two legit play off teams one is a shell of what Saints used to be…… the other they went against The Goat and got smoked. *Slow Claps*

  30. Perhaps one day the Vikings will have a player better than a Packers player. Moss came close but for now we all must bow to their greatness.

  31. Vikings fans crowing here need to be reminded that beating the Lions is nothing to brag about, especially with Stafford sick and then injured. _________________________

9-7 is good enough to make the playoffs many years with 6 teams. This year with 3 wild card teams per conference, 9-7 is a pretty solid bet to at least be in a tie breaker for a playoff spot

  32. While the playoffs are a long shot, at least the Vikes seem to be improving. The Texans canned Obrien after the Texans game, so I wonder if the Lions’ loss to the Vikes will similarly be Patricia’s demise. And I don’t get why Vikes fans even bother worrying about the Pack in a post about the Lions’ game – that team was exposed for what they really are last week.
