Sunday Night Football: Saints in driver’s seat in NFC South after crushing Bucs 38-3

The Saints didn’t seem to take kindly to those who picked the Buccaneers to win the NFC South. New Orleans reminded everyone who has won the division the past three seasons and who the favorite is this season.

The Saints crushed the Buccaneers 38-3 on Sunday Night Football.

The Saints moved to 6-2 in the division, while the Bucs fell to 6-3. But New Orleans has swept the Bucs, so it holds the head-to-head tiebreaker.

The Saints won the first meeting, 34-23, in the season opener. The Bucs could only wish that Sunday night was that close.

It was a blowout from start to finish as the Saints imposed their will.

The Saints gained 420 yards against the league’s third-rated defense, while holding the Bucs to 194 yards. It was so dominant that former Bucs quarterback Jameis Winston got mop-up duty for the Saints.

The Saints led 31-0 at halftime.

Drew Brees went 26-of-32 for 222 yards and four touchdowns. He threw touchdown passes of 14 yards to Tre'Quan Smith, 7 yards to Adam Trautman, 12 yards to Emmanuel Sanders and 3 yards to Josh Hill. Alvin Kamara also had a 1-yard touchdown run.

Michael Thomas returned to catch five passes for 51 yards, and Taysom Hill did a little of everything with seven rushing attempts for 54 yards, two pass completions for 48 yards and one catch for 21 yards.

Tom Brady was 22-of-38 for 209 yards and three interceptions. David Onyemata, Malcolm Jenkins and Marcus Williams had picks for the Saints. Brady was sacked three times, including twice by Trey Hendrickson.

Antonio Brown caught three passes for 31 yards in his Bucs’ debut, and Mike Evans had four catches for 64 yards.

The Bucs had only five rushing attempts for 8 yards, including a kneel down by Blaine Gabbert on the final play.

How did he throw so many TD passes and the Bucs score so few points?

  2. Man

    That was a beat down.

The worst was the field goal.

Go for the td like a man or take the goose egg

  3. From what I have watched so far this season the Bucs have looked like an above average team. They could get hot but they certainly haven’t looked like the super team they’ve been hyped up to be.

  4. Saints D came to play. Drew was surgical. Division locked mid season and light seas ahead. Nice to know your team made the playoffs in week 9.

  5. Bucs were not prepared at all, starting from coaching. I really hope this was an outlier for them and they use this as a wake up call and fix up everything in time for the playoffs. No mistakes then.

  6. LOL I think every “expert” except possibly Tony Dungy picked the Bucs in this game. I picked them also. Wow. What a complete slaughter this game was. Brees looked like Mahomes and Brady looked like Methusala.

Is this the beginning of another late season dip in Tom’s performance?

BB had it all the way.

  8. The GOAT sure doesn’t look like it when he actually has to play real teams in his division unlike the jv teams he’s been playing the last 20 years getting that automatic first round bye year after year…..

  9. blowncallssuck said the same thing that I did weeks ago when the Bengals elected for a last second field goal to avoid a goose egg instead of playing for a touchdown. I just wish people kept that same energy for the Bengals that they have for the Buc’s decision to go for three down way late.
That being said, nobody should be surprised by this. The Buccaneers are merely a mirage. The teams with long-term chemistry were going to have a big advantage over big free agent constructed teams with no offseason due to Covid. The Bucs are like that kid who smokes cigarettes/vapes to look cool and fit in and ends up with irreversible lung damage. They sold out to meet Tom’s demands because they are so desperate for a winning record and recognition, let alone a Super Bowl/playoff success that it came back to bite them and they sold out. I mean, I know AB is a cancer, but he’s that much of a cancer that the chemistry of the offense is disrupted in his first game back? With all those weapons that they have? In a home game? Same reason why I wanted both the Ravens and the Seahawks to avoid contemplating realistically signing him. No chance they win the division now because with the sweep, do you really see the Saints losing two divisional games to either the falcons or the Panthers? Ha! Don’t make me laugh… These Bucs lost to the 5-4 Bears. They are not forreal.

  10. The Saints D came to play today….Five picks in two games against the Saints for Brady. Can’t win a game running the ball only five times, I don’t care who the opponent is

  11. Please bottle that motivation and open it at the start of the remaining games. Finally no blown deep coverages. What a difference maker to enable the offense.

  12. Welcome to the NFC South. Tommy Boy. It’s not that cupcake division you been playing in and virtually getting a bye for the last 20 years. Drew Brees is the MAN down here. Geaux Saints!!

  13. It was a complete horrible performance by the Bucs period. They were out coach by Sean Payton and Dennis Allen. Brady, Gronk, and Brown were non factors. In actuality they played poorly. The best receiver tonight was Godwin who was playing with a broken finger. The defense which has been dominating at times, was mostly a non factor. The Bucs are now 2 games down to the Saints with little chance of winning the division.

Bad day in Tampa Bay. Out coached and out played!

  14. Not a Brady, nor Buc’s fan, but how as a head coach (Ariens) do you leave Brady in down 38-3 midway thru the 4th quarter and he is getting hit? Idiot!

  15. The Saints certainly have the Bucs number this year, easily Brady’s two worst games. Bucs better hope they don’t face them in the playoffs, assuming both make it.

The curse of AB is real Tampa, beware

  16. Tom Brady showed some limitations of his age. However the loss is a team loss in that the Tampa defense could not stop Brees. Well not until the Saints had a huge lead. Brady was so short on a deep pass route to Antonio Brown that Brown had to stop in an attempt to catch the ball. Brady had his time taken away and that’s how the better teams will beat Tampa Bay. Antonio Brown must be thinking that he should have approached the Miami Dolphins on the east coast of Florida where he lives instead of pursuing the Tampa offer. The Dolphins have a better team now but need some wide receiver help! Antonio after this pandemic season is over check out Miami! Tua will accurately throw you many attempts!

  17. The GOAT sure doesn’t look like it when he actually has to play real teams in his division unlike the jv teams he’s been playing the last 20 years getting that automatic first round bye year after year…..

So what’s the excuse for when he beat all the other good teams in the AFC 9 times and went onto beat the best the NFC had to offer 6 times?

Division games are hard, as much as fans want to make them seem easier. Brady’s record vs AFC East compared to the rest of the NFL for 20 years wasn’t all that different. And much like last night, it only counts as one loss no matter how bad you lose. Brees thoroughly outplayed Brady last night, that we know.

  18. This is what we saw in NE that last couple years, turtling at the first sign of pressure, no REAL mobility to evade pressure, pissy attitude. At least in NE he had a crutch to lean on having very little to work with He has arguably 3 #1 WRs on this roster. I expect they’ll gain some semblance of an offensive flow in upcoming game, only to be shattered again by a real team with real defensive pressure capabilities. You can’t win in this league unless you can truly escape Defensive pressure around the QB. Caveat emptor TB, this is what you get when you plunk down $ for damaged goods

  19. Who kidnapped the team that laid waste to the Packers and Raiders? I’m sure glad I don’t bet on football.

How do you explain Brady’s winning percentage being higher against some other divisions (like the AFC North) than it is against the AFCE?

  21. 4 three and outs on the first 4 drives. Taking deep shots in 15+ mile hour wind without getting into any sort of rhythm, that is as stupid play calling as you would see. The Bucs offense has struggled number of times in the 1st half only to be bailed out by the defense.

Credit to the Saints they have won the division and will host a playoff game. Must have been fun for Jameis Winston to watch that game from the sidelines. I hope Arians and other Bucs’ players stop taking shots at him every time they win a game after trailing.

  22. Another Arians dud. Five rushing attempts, one of which was a kneel down. Arians has always put together a nice scheme, but completely loses it when the clock starts. A good coach, yes. But terribly overrated.

  23. Never thought I would route for NO being a past Pats and Brady fan but got tired of his shtick. The bucs went out and got Brown who IMO should be in jail or out of the league, got Gronk who is terribly out of shape and making a fool of his past career. All to make Brady happy and basically he too, looks like he played two years too long.
Love to have a dollar for every person in sports I’ve seen in my long lifetime who stuck around too long thinking they could be father time.
Maybe just maybe a light when on in bradys head, its time pal, give it up, your not going out a winner.

Classic overreacting Monday comment. Where were you the last 5 weeks?

Coming into this game he was 4th in passing yards 3 rd in tds the team was 6-2 and Brady was playing every well. The 7 previous games he had 17 tds and 1 int.

One bad game in 6 weeks and “it’s over” ,”he should retire “
    It dumb

A few weeks ago A Rogers looked just as bad vs the Bucs had a QB rating of 34 yet somehow the packers season went on.

This game will have absolutely ZERO effect on how the Saints or Bucs play next week.

    ==

There’s a fair amount in truth in that statement.
But perhaps the defense would be fresher and play better if it wasn’t on the field for far too many snaps, courtesy of a great many three-and-outs by the Bucs offense, not to mention three Tom Brady turnovers.

  26. As the Packers and Aaron Rodgers found out against the Bucs the Bucs found out against the Saints, its very hard to play up to your talent against a good defense when your quarterback is on the ground instead of on his feet and his recievers cant get open when he is on his feet and his offensive line decides to go on a working vacation along with the teams entire defense.the Bucs fans mock opposing teams when they win but its their qb and team that is getting mocked this morning.

  27. Anybody who watched the Cardinals will tell you this is a very familiar outing for Arians. The bigger the game, the less prepared he seems to have his team. And their line play is horrid and they’re just asking for Brady to get hurt. They should have had him out of the game early in the 4th quarter.

Funny! Bet BB would be VERY happy to welcome Brady back.

  29. The only reason the Saints picked up Winston is for games like this. Nobody should be surprised. Nobody should be surprised that Brady threw three picks. Who better to know how to make a Bucs QB throw three picks than Winston. He did it every other game.

What people failed to see is that New Orleans probably played their best game of the season. Not to hard when you have the teams prior qb who running your scout team.

The blame is on Arians! He is never win anything as a head coach.

    ******************************************
Without a doubt! I mean how can anyone blame Brady for his absolutely horrible showing last night. Has to fall on the coach or the rest of the team. Tom Brady is never at fault. Never ever.

  31. James Wnston has beaten the Saints wen he was a Buc, but now he is a Saint thanks to Ariens dumping him after Brady signed. Good ol Karma rearing it’s head again. As for people saying that he being on the Saints team is an unfair advantage, he never asked to be cut and besides that doesn’t account for why their defense couldn’t stop Brees and the Saints offense..
