Christian McCaffrey may miss time with shoulder injury

Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey suffered a shoulder injury at the end of Sunday’s game that may force him to miss more time.

McCaffrey’s status for Sunday’s game against the Buccaneers is very much in doubt, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

After signing a contract that made him the highest-paid running back in the NFL this offseason, McCaffrey has had an injury-plagued 2020. The ankle injury he suffered in Week Two caused him to miss six games, and yesterday was his first game back.

On Sunday McCaffrey appeared to be back to full speed, carrying 18 times for 69 yards and a touchdown, and catching 10 passes for 82 yards and another touchdown. But the Panthers now may have to go back to Mike Davis carrying the load.

  1. By the time these guys ewrn the monster contracts their bodies are so beaten up they can’t come close to the same performance. Sad to say but stop paying RBs

  2. This is why you don’t have a bellcow back at 17 mil per. All you are doing is playing a guy for fantasy production and shortening his career.

He also missed an entire year hurt in college. AND Carolina wanted to play him basically every play, putting him a receiver, having him return kicks… It was like they thought he was indestructible.

This. Carolina has run him in to the ground since he’s been the guy. Can’t expect any player’s body to hold up with that kind of usage. Not in the NFL.

  5. This is exactly why Denver wanted to pair someone with Lindsay in the backfield. These kids get broken down when they’re young and can play through the pain, but it comes back to sap their longevity in the end. Granted, Denver’s plan has backfired in just about every possible way, but pairing these small, young rbs with someone to take the load off every now and then is an absolute must.

  6. The Panthers played their best football since 2017 during October 2020 without McCaffery. Just saying as an unbiased Whodat.

  7. Teams take heed. This is why teams invest cap space into other positions. Running backs are too interchangeable and quickly diminished to Garner this sort of cap hit.

  8. Not the first time we’ve seen Carolina take an incredibly talented athlete and run them into the ground. It’s a poorly run franchise that ought to know better by now. You get lucky enough to have another talent like this you don’t wear him out, you do your best to surround him with more players to support him so he doesn’t have to be on the field all day long and more importantly, so that when he is on the field he isn’t getting destroyed. Protect your investment!
