Carson Wentz calls Eagles’ performance “extremely frustrating”

Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz turned in another ugly performance in Sunday’s loss to the Giants, and when reporters told him after the game that the offense had gone 0-for-9 on converting third downs, he was stunned.

“I knew we struggled on third down, I didn’t realize we were that poor,” Wentz said, via the Times Herald. “Anytime you’re 0-for-9 you’re obviously not doing something very well. Hats off to them. They had a good game plan. That’s a good defense over there. They made it hard on us. It’s extremely frustrating.”

Wentz indicated he thought the story of the game was more that the Giants’ defense played well than that the Eagles’ offense played poorly.

“We don’t go into a game thinking we’re going to struggle like that and go 0-for-9 on third downs and only put up a couple points,” Wentz said. “But I’ve got to give a lot of credit to that defense. I thought we had a good game plan ready to go. They made a lot more plays than us and we didn’t deserve to win.”

Wentz seems to keep running into defenses that play well, week after week. His contract makes clear that the Eagles are committed to him, but they need him to play a lot better.

  1. how can you have any continuity when you have to be a third baseman on kelce’s snaps. you can not look down field when you are looking at the ground. at least 10 snaps way to low plus at least one roller.

  2. Eagles were terrible coming off a bye which never happened under Andy Reid. This team needs an enema.

  3. It’s only frustrating because he thinks they’re better than they are. It’s as expected for most people.

  4. The Eagles are sunk for years due to Carson’s contract. The best case scenario is cutting him after June 1 2022. They still will be hit by 16 mil in dead money but that is the quickest out they have; that is without having to have 26 plus mil in dead money. He obviously is not a starting caliber QB. His flashes fooled many people and he got paid. The Eagles need to do a complete overhaul this off-season. Trade away anyone over 30 that they can while still maintaining a solid roster and gather draft picks. They can tank next season and hope a good QB is available in the draft. While they have Hurts, I don’t see anything in his demeanor on the field that demonstrates he belongs.

  5. Pederson has lost his patience with him, but Howie gave him the contract. Howie can’t afford to continue looking bad (a lot of bad contracts), so he is in between Carson playing and Carson on the bench. This will get ugly soon.

  6. I don’t understand how the Eagles have regressed so much after their Super Bowl. They should have stuck with Foles and traded Wentz, but hindsight ya da ya da

  7. Mr Lutie, as 2017 drifts further into the rear view mirror, it is becoming painful clear that this team is saddled with a below average head coach (thanks for the Super Bowl Frank Reich and Dave Filippo!) and an overrated general manager. Wentz’s regression is obvious and I can’t think of one player who has appreciably improved under this regime. In fact, several have moved on and gotten better (Exhibit A: Nelson Agholor). It’s time to clean house.

  8. The Eagles offense ran at will yesterday, while Kielce was burning weeds with his snaps in the shotgun all day. I’d like somebody to explain why after every 18 yard gain on a run, “somebody” immediately calls 4 pass plays in a row after watching the aforementioned horrible snaps and coupled with Prince Harry’s abysmal performance all year. Asking for a friend….

  9. Head coach and GM need to go as well.

    Graham Mooney says:
Carson wentz is terrible. Replace him. Problem solved.

  10. This is what happens when you hire Wentz’s best buddy to be the QB coach. Instead of telling Wentz what he needs to hear, he tells Wentz what he wants to hear and they go hang out together.

The narrative is that it’s not Went’z fault that he missed open receivers or that he made bad decisions but hey he didn’t turn the ball over 3x yesterday so that’s good right?

I see that the Eagles have already written off JJAW because they played Alshon Jeffery over him but had the same impact, no catches. The Eagles top 3 WR outside of the rookies will be released this offseason and no talent will be lost.

It’s really hard to tell if Wentz is the problem or the coaching some times. Busts go to other teams and flourish so i think it’s a combination of both.

I would also like to know how many of those pass plays were audibles from runs because Wentz’s insecurities.

  12. Pandemic year excuse? (egg on my face)
That was my explanation for horrible start- looking a lot like 1972 Boo Birds….
Hard to watch. Wentz is talented, but playing like Pete Liske

  13. Carson Wentz is getting sacked at a rate that’s consistent with David Carr. Y’all need to fix your OL. You can’t expect your QB to take 60+ sacks in a season and win games. That’s not on Carson.

  14. There were only 3 low snaps all game and even the low snap was very easy to handle but of course Wentz failed the rest of the snaps were great and webtz overthrew wide open receivers all game

  15. If your QB
    has 0 playoff wins
    60 fumbles
    7-25 vs teams over 500
has no heart no desire to win
started 5-6 in 4 of his first 5 seasons
    Never upset after losing
    hated by teammates
    makes everyone near him worse
    holds ball too long
    ignores open receivers
    Your QB is Carson Wentz

  16. I hope that this is addressed by Lurie. The team construct seems suspect e.g. signing old and/or injury-prone players, and coaching status and expectations.

Why are we consistently playing from behind? Defense can’t stop ANYONE. Wentz is not a great QB and is steadily regressing. At times he’s the OTHER TEAM’s best player.

Our defense is exceptionally weak! Our vaunted D-line is way over-rated, awful LBs, and so VERY predictable. Schwartz needs to go – period.

As a passionate Eagles fan, I am extremely disappointed! We very well may need a head coaching change, revisit Wentz, and move on from an ever-expanding failed player roster. With our cap, this unfortunately may be the time to (gulp) rebuild. We’re that bad.

  17. No single reason this team currently stinks:

    1. Pederson has lost his mojo
    2. Too many offensive “consultants” instead of a bonafide OC
    3. Wentz has clearly regressed
    4. lack of consistent play calling
    5. lousy LBs
    6. no imagination with defensive scheme/playing calling

  18. I was a defender of Wentz….until that night game against the Giants where he was absolutely awful. He still makes too many dumb mistakes which isn’t something you’d expect from a franchise QB in his fifth year. He has the lowest QBR of his career. This year it’s 50.1 which includes some real stinkers. He’s starting to look more like Blake Bortles.

  19. A real leader will shoulder the blame publicly for losses like this, something Wentz does not really do. I wonder what his teammates really think of him.

  20. “I don’t understand how the Eagles have regressed so much after their Super Bowl. They should have stuck with Foles and traded Wentz, but hindsight ya da ya da”
    _____________

The answer is that neither guy was the right pick, not that they should have dumped tons of money into Foles who has been hurt and/or not starting material consistently since leaving. Plug him into the current Eagles and he looks identical to Wentz.

Um, it’s not like Foles has exactly been lighting it up since the SB with Jacksonville and now Chicago…

  22. Be careful what you wish for on dumping Wentz. It’s not like good NFL QBs are available at will down at the local sporting goods store. With better offensive coaching and a healthy O-line, I bet Wentz wouldn’t be regressing.

    *******

All the sacks are because Wentz holds ball too long eagles oline is top 5

Wentz has best oline in nfl in 2018 and 2019 and started 5-7 both seasons foles won with same coaches so yiur entire comment is inavlid

  25. It’s certainly frustrating watching them play. Honestly, I think Wentz is the least of their issues. This team is underprepared and not coached well at all. Time for a regime change. Get rid of Pederson, Schwartz and Taylor. Keep Duce and find a guy that holds people accountable, knows when he’s too far out of his depth. Hire a new head coach, a real offensive play caller and a defensive coordinator that knows how to make adjustments. I’m not remotely kidding when I say I firmly believe this team is a new coaching staff away from being super bowl contenders again.

Meh, Foles has been through several coordinators and coaches since then, I’d think with consistency he would have played better for the Eagles going forward and avoided much of his post SB drop off. But that is pure speculation based on woulda/coulda/shoulda. I’m not an eagles fan but I do like Napoleon. He played great for Philly with Chip, then saved the day with Pederson in the SB. Philly mismanaged a “really good” QB and their franchise QB that took his place, who was supposed to be a “great” QB, is on a path to being a backup elsewhere after an inevitable rebuild.

  27. We’re just fans. We get to look away if what we see on the field is too ugly.

Imagine how frustrating this must be for HIM?

  28. Start with getting rid of Gym Shorts and overhauling the defense. Then ditch the geriatric offense players (yes, I’m looking at you JP, DeSean & Alshon) and hire a real offensive coordinator. Reid went through a bad stretch here as well and turned it around in KC, so replacing Doug isn’t the answer.

  29. Carson is taking pretty much all the blame, Doug Pederson deserves a huge chunk. His play calling is just confusing and some of his decisions to go for it on fourth and 2 pt (yes I know they make it a lot) are VERY questionable. It’s almost as if he just likes the rush.

  30. Doug Pederson is 12-2 with foles so all the blame goes to Wentz same team wins amaot wvery game with PEDEROSN when Wentz isn’t qb
