Patrick Mahomes overtakes Russell Wilson as MVP favorite

Burning meals, as it turns out, has consequences.

The #LetRussCook campaign has fizzled in recent weeks, fueled by a significant uptick in turnovers. He had three in the team’s first five games, and 10 in the last four. As a result, Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson has fallen out of the pole position for the MVP race.

Via PointsBet, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has overtaken Wilson as the favorite for the regular-season MVP award. Mahomes currently has +180 odds, meaning that a $100 bet will win $180. Wilson has moved to +225.

Next comes Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers at +300, followed by Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray, at +700.

A significant gap comes after Murray, with three players at +2500 each: Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady, and Bills quarterback Josh Allen.

Vikings running back Dalvin Cook has moved from +8000 to +4000 to, most recently, +3000.

Saints running back Alvin Kamara lands at +5000, followed by Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson and Saints quarterback Drew Brees, at +6000 each.

  1. If somehow Brady helps take this Bucs team to the super bowl and wins it, he’s the MVP in my book. They were 7-9 last season. It’s too bad it’s just a regular season award.

  2. the difference between Aaron Rodgers and the other candidates is Rodgers is padding his stats and hogging all short yardage TDs from their running backs, all against garbage teams. Rodgers’ entire career is based on being a stat hog. it’s why their offense is never balanced and why they have 1 super bowl appearance in 13 years

  3. MVP Top 5 (In order)

    -Kyler Murray
    -Pat Mahomes
    -Russ Wilson
    -Ben Rothlisburger
    -Derek Carr

  4. Big ben for mvp, steelers run game sucks and he wins the game. No other teams offense depends as much in their qb except maybe the Seahawks. 22 td 4 int. 9-0 from 8-8 last year so….

  5. If we start counting all the “almost interceptions” everyone’s numbers go way up, not just Mahomes.

  6. (Mahomes throws an int)
    * Flag is thrown *
Ref: “Penalty on the defense, intercepting the ball. 5 yd penalty, first down Kansas City”

  7. With a $175mil(or less) cap coming next year the only thing Russ and a few other QBs are going to get is a pay cut!

  8. Russ will bounce back with an upcoming super soft schedule once we get past Thursday night. We will get some healthy RB’s back and win the NFC West but there’s no path to a super bowl with a historically inept defense. What is Tre Flowers doing in the NFL?

  9. If A-Rod has big game against the Colts he will move into the MVP favorite position. I really am not that impressed with Mahomes season so far. Great QB, but isn’t having some amazing season. Aaron is right there with him.

  10. Wilson has been so bad the last 3 games, he won’t get a single vote….like his entire career thus far.

  11. Rodgers has been pretty vintage Rodgers for much of the year after off-season proclamations that he was over the hill. Imagine if Rodgers had the WR corps Mahomes has? He’d probably lead the league in every category and the GB defense would just have to come to play in the 4th quarter. Well, they kinda do that anyway.

With Davante Adams and a bunch of nobodies, Rodgers is in the top echelon of percentage completions, TDs, passer rating. I think he would get the nod over Mahomes with his bevy of skilled receivers.

  12. @ freefromwhatyouare:

Isn’t it crazy you’re not “impressed” with Mahome’s year so far when he’s only thrown for 24 TDs/1 int YTD… that’s how great he is. The fact that you’re not “impressed” by this, speaks to his greatness. In only his 3rd FULL year.

  13. I get people hate Big Ben and/or the Steelers but he should be the leading candidate for MVP. He has highlight plays such as his backwards pass to Eric Ebron, throwing a dart to Juju with a guy on this throwing arm, or him making up plays on the fly. The biggest indicator of Ben’s value is comparing the Steelers with Ben and without Ben.

    Steelers 2019 w/o Big Ben: 8 wins / 18 Passing TDs / 7 Rushing TDs

    Steelers 2020 (9 games) w/Big Ben: 9 wins / 22 Pasting TDs / 9 Rushing TDs

  14. No surprise there as it should be. He’s simply the best current NFL player, period. Certainly more substantial than the corny “Let Russ Cook” campaign.

  15. DALVIN COOK!! Is there even any doubt?!! While the vikings have several players deserving consideration (Cousins, Thielen, Jefferson), Cook is far and away the best running back (and thereby, the best player) in the league today!!!

  16. First and foremost can we not call it the MVP award? It is clearly the Sports writers favorite quarterback award. The person most valuable to their team clearly has nothing to do with this award.

  17. The way Chris Collingsworth gushed about and fawned over Lamar Jackson in that game versus NE, you would think the guy had MVP wrapped up without any competition. One one play, Jackson ran for about 9 yards and Collingsworth acted as if he’d just witnessed a miracle of some kind. Makes you wonder who else would be considered for MVP with that kind of hype machine following them around.

  18. Seniority gives it to Wilson, recent resume gives it to Mahommes, but 2020 play it should go to Murray. Kid is at another level already, and I’ve said that before the Hail Murray.

  19. The posts trying to diminish Mahomes…the refs cheat…Mahomes flops…just LOL!

Hate all you want. He’s still the best player in the game and he’s having another all world season. Oh, and he’s not going away anytime soon.

    Deal with it.

  20. Only one of these candidates is establishing NFL records. As in “history”. Never before. Canton, Ohio type of criteria…. Kyler is on pace to be the first 4,000+ passing, 1,000+ rushing, and who knows how many rushing TD’s in the history of this game. HELLO! Yes, they are all great players, but simple facts folks…. And BTW, what is the money on (not odds) in Vegas?

The Hail Murray should more accurately be called the Hail Hopkins. That play says a lot more about Deandre than it does about Kyler.

Every NFL player is one snap away from a season or career ending injury. No one wants that to happen but the reality shows up every week of the NFL season. It would be a shame and great loss but no one can guarantee it won’t happen.

  23. Wilson was quoted in the Seattle Times today as saying he thought he was “great” four times in a row. Kid you not. How does this guy get his helmet over that big head?

  24. Kyler. . . 17 tds, 8 ints and a qb rating of 98??? Derek Carr has 16 tds, 2 ints, rating of 103. C’mon man

  25. I’m throwing Alvin Kamara’s name into the mix. Look at what he’s done this year for the Saints. I’m not just saying that because I’m a Saints fan.

Let Russ Cook is really getting to his head huh

  27. derek carr number every bit as good as murray…and carr means everything to that team…….not to mention all the dropped TD passes….easily 4 more

  28. The MVP Favorite should be coaches who are smart enough to Run the ball, not these players from Obviously pass happy teams that will get themselves burned in the playoffs. The Trend in the NFL since last season RUN THE BALL, whether you are Balanced, Run Balanced, or just Run Heavy. That Stats don’t lie. Teams who are more balanced, Run Balanced or Run Heavy then their opponents are 112-32-1 with 2 pushes 77.2% win,
Teams with more rushes then pass plays 56-5 91.8% win
Teams with Even balance or more runs then passes 61-5 92.4%
Teams with less then 20 rush attempts 8-30-1 20.5% win
From the data I can actually find on the info teams with less then 10 rushing attempts
1-41 the original research goes from 1960-2008. This yr it has happened at least twice
both of them the same week Bucs 5, Washington 9.

  29. Mahomes is the best player in the league, and he plays QB in a QB league. He’s easily the MVP. Roethlisberger would be 2nd, and Kyler Murray, Tom Brady, and Aaron Rodgers fighting for 3rd place.
