Sean McDermott: “Coach’s decision” not to play Mitch Morse

Center Mitch Morse started the first eight games of the Bills season before suffering a concussion in Week 8 that caused him to miss the team’s win over the Seahawks in Week 9.

Morse was off the injury report in Week 10, but he wasn’t back on the field. Morse joined backup quarterback Matt Barkley as the only players on the gameday roster not to play a snap in the 32-30 loss to the Cardinals.

On Monday, Bills head coach Sean McDermott said there were no last-minute health concerns and that it was strictly his decision to go with Jon Feliciano at center.

“He was healthy, coach’s decision right there,” McDermott said, via Sal Maiorana of the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle. “We know Mitch is a good player and just felt like for that week, meaning last week, we felt like we had at least some momentum with the group we had had in when Mitch went down and wanted to take a look at it one more week there.”

McDermott insisted that Morse was not benched, although that would seem to be an exercise in semantics given his previous place in the pecking order. He also said nothing has been decided on an ongoing basis.

The Bills failed to get anything going in the run game against Arizona and Seattle picked up seven sacks in the Week 9 win, so there would seem to be a good chance that they’ll make some more tweaks to the offensive line during their bye week.

  1. The guy has had a bunch of concussions, made a lot of sense to have him there if needed but otherwise take that week and the bye week off for two extra weeks of healing.

  2. Coach being very careful with the concussion history with one of Buffalo’s rocks. Smart call. More football to be played.

  3. He’s the second highest paid center in football and one concussion away from retirement…. yeah I’d give him a few extra weeks as well knowing the bye week was one game away.

  4. Bills have had to shuffle the offensive line pretty much every week all season due to injuries. I’m guessing they were trying to get a shred of continuity this week so they could focus the game plan on other things. Morse will be back at center after the bye.

  5. “Their Oline and D are terrible.”

Well, not really. And Allen turned out to be the best QB out of that whole class, didn’t he?

    How is 3rd place, btw?

Your D i giving up 30 points per week like it’s an automatic. Pats are coming. Oh yes.

And you will lose in Foxborough. I hope you enjoyed your Covid19 gifts because that’s over. Gilmore, Edelman and Michel are returning and there is no reason why NE can’t run the table. The 2 LA games and Miami present the biggest challenges, not Buffalo because your team kinda is overrated and NE owns Allen.

    lol

Without one of the most miraculous plays in NFL history, the Bills are 8-2.

They’re still 7-3, and are undefeated in the division. I’m worried about Miami. I’m not worried – at all – about the Pats.

You kept saying all offseason how they were “loaded w/ talent.” They’re not. This year is a real testament to BB, because it’s one of the most middlin’ rosters in the NFL.

They won’t run the table. And Allen’s 1st full season was last year. He’s 1-0 against NE this year. I guess you’re using “owning” in a very loose way.

Michel won’t even start, btw – and no one is concerned about Edelman, anymore. He should retire.

Buffalo still wins the division. Miami grabs a wildcard. NE does enough to miss the playoffs AND miss out on one of the top QB’s in the upcoming draft.

BTW, I wouldn’t be too secure with fumbleitis as your QB….

Man, you are so dumb and delusional all at once. Who cares who starts? It’s about options and depth and no egos.

And, yes, they are loaded with talent. BestOL in football.

Slowly but surely with reps, the 2019 and 2020 classes are coming along week by week. Just because you don’t get it and are not knowledgeable about the sport, doesn’t mean BB didn’t draft good players in the last 3 years, because he did.

    NE owns Buffalo still.

  10. The Patriots won’t sniff the playoffs. They were lucky to beat the Jets. That win against the Jets and the win the other night will keep the Patriots out of the AFCE cellar. The AFCE standings will be the same at the end of the season as they are today with NE a solid 3rd.

  11. Wait…Buffalo has already beaten NE this year. Not sure if anyone can claim “ownership rights” when the win/loss column doesn’t even agree.
