Tua Tagovailoa aims to be first rookie QB since Ben Roethlisberger to win first 4 starts

If the Dolphins beat the Broncos on Sunday, Tua Tagovailoa will join Ben Roethlisberger in some exclusive company.

A Miami win would be the Dolphins’ fourth win in four starts for Tagovailoa, and the Dolphins would join Roethlisberger’s 2004 Steelers as the only teams in the last 40 years to win their first four games with a rookie starting at quarterback.

Prior to Roethlisberger, the last rookie quarterback to win his first four starts was Phil Simms with the 1979 Giants. That team started 0-5 with Joe Pisarcik and Randy Dean at quarterback before turning to Simms and winning four in a row before ultimately finishing 6-10.

The Dolphins were 3-3 when they benched Ryan Fitzpatrick for Tagovailoa and are now 6-3, and with games coming up against the Broncos, Jets and Bengals, it’s easy to see them improving to 9-3 and being playoff contenders down the stretch. When coach Brian Flores turned to Tagovailoa, some thought he was giving up on the season. But the Dolphins are winning with Tagovailoa at the helm.

  1. Anyone that bets against this Dolphins defense vs. a second string Quarterback needs their head examined. Tua will be the frosting on the cake.

  2. 0 INT 0 Fumble in 3 games.
He might, if he keeps those stats clean.
I can’t see the Broncos win without their Defense scoring points or giving the Offense a great field position.

  3. Let’s have this talk again at the end of December after a few games in the North.

  4. Brian Flores is by the far the coach of the year so far, and most people couldn’t name the Dolphins’ coach if asked. That’s mind boggling, but par for the course. I’m sure the coach doesn’t mind, but the media has been late to this party.

  5. Tagovailoa has done well thanks to the Dolphins O-line, D-line and special teams. If they make the playoffs, they might give the Steelers and / or Bills a tough time. Kudos to Coach Flores.

  6. I thought it was a mistake to bench Fitz and start Tua, I was wrong about that. Looks like Flores is the real deal. The real test will be at Buffalo. I do think the Dolphins will make the playoffs.

  7. Ben won his first 12 regular season starts I believe.

Ben won his first 14 starts incl. playoffs (first 15 regular season).

  8. These stats / milestones say more about the teams and more specifically the team’s defense than the rookie QB. Look at the two other teams cited here, Pittsburgh, and NY Giants. Both had outstanding Defenses.

Miami only has no games in the North in December. They have one game in January against the Bills. That should be a good game.
