Doug Pederson: Eagles would trade for Carson Wentz all over again

The Eagles were so eager to draft Carson Wentz in 2016 that they gave up the No. 8 overall choice, a third-rounder and fourth-rounder that year and first- and second-rounders in 2017. Philadelphia got the No. 2 choice from the Browns, which they used on the North Dakota State quarterback, and a 2017 fourth-rounder.

Wentz has gone 35-29-1 with no playoff victories since arriving in the NFL, though the Eagles, of course, won Super Bowl LII after Nick Foles replaced the injured Wentz.

With the struggling Wentz facing the Browns on Sunday, Eagles coach Doug Pederson claims he would do the trade all over again.

“Oh heck yeah, I’d do it all over again,” Pederson said on a conference call with Browns reporters Wednesday, via Mary Kay Cabot of cleveland.com. “He’s the guy we wanted back then. He’s still the guy we want today. And I love everything about Carson Wentz, and he’s a great leader for our team and our city and I’d do it all over again.”

What is Pederson supposed to say? Like it or not, Wentz is the Eagles’ franchise quarterback until he’s not.

Wentz swears he’s not listening to outside noise. But with Wentz’s 73.1 passer rating ahead of only Drew Lock and Sam Darnold this season among qualifying quarterbacks, questions abound about why and how Wentz has become one of the worst quarterbacks in the NFL.

In 2017, Wentz was in the MVP conversation until his season-ending knee injury. Since then, he is 17-18-1, with 60 touchdowns, 26 interceptions and a 90.7 passer rating.

“He’s doing really well,” Pederson said. “He’s obviously battled through some of that. He’s such an aggressive style of player that sometimes it can get him in trouble from time to time with some of the aggressiveness. But he learns to manage it and he handles it, and we’ve had some injury up front with the offensive line.

“We’ve obviously had some players at the skill positions and receiver position that aren’t playing and it hasn’t been all perfect. You can force the issue at time. Last week, he played a lot better. We didn’t turn the ball over. We just didn’t capitalize on third down and in the red zone. I think he’s really handled it. He’s working through it not only with himself but with the offense that’s what’s encouraging and we’ve still got seven games left, and we’ll see.”

Who knows if Pederson can get Wentz’s confidence out of the crapper, but he’s trying his best.

  1. He can play, the team stinks around him. He isn’t an elite passer but you can win with him, just can’t keep signing old players to big deals and expect them to not get hurt. His top WR is a rookie who would be a #3 on most teams. The O-line is old and depleted. This team is old.

  2. Like always, Pederson is just telling Wentz what he wants to hear. Wentz, Pederson, and Roseman are all on the hot seat.

  3. When the team is down to 4th string WRs and 3rd string OL due to injuries, it’s not the best situation for any QB. Still, he needs to get rid of the ball and not take those crazy sacks.

  4. That’s all fine and good but Wentz is going to cost him his job. I wonder if he’ll still feel the same after that.

  5. Just dont believe he inspires his teammates. Maybe things can change but he should win the division unless Dalton can come back and get the Cowboys to play football …

  6. And Eagles fans would love to trade Pederson (and whatever else it takes) back to the Chiefs for Andy Reid.

Can the eagles trade Doug Pederson and a first round pick for Frank Reich?

    ********
Reich would be 0-9 if Wentz was his qb

Funny to hear that now since so many Eagles fans were constantly calling for his firing and were glad when he finally left.

  9. Eagles oline was best oline in nfl in 2018 and 2019 and Wentz started 5-6 both seasons eagles oline gave Wentz 4 seconds or More this year on most of his sacks keep trying

In 2019 the line was good but Pederon’s play calling was so bad that it didnt matter
    ********
So how is pederson 12-2 without Wentz if his play calling is so bad how does he win with foles? Because the play calling is excellent Wentz is the problem

  11. Sunday the run was the only thing that was working. Did Pederson stick with it? No. He decided to pass on 61% of the plays. He finally had receivers and his RB back from injury, and continued to run “12” personnel. He went for 2 when there was no reason and continued to do so even after running out of 2 point conversion plays. Would a good coach do this? No. Would an average coach do this? No. Would a terrible coach do this? Yes. He’s a terrible coach and has lost the respect of the players. That’s why he’ll be fired at the end of the season.

  12. Foles made a playoff run in 2018 with same line that went 5-6 with Wentz enough said Wentz has always been the problem

  13. By comparison, if you look at a small sample size of Russell Wilson and Tom Brady, you can see Wentz is elite but he has almost no help around him. Wilson gets sacked 6 times by the rams and as a result throws 2 picks and the Seahawks lose. Brady gets mauled by the saints and looks awful in route to a very lopsided loss. People want to find blame in Wentz but no quarterback in NFL history could be consistently successful in this offense right now. Reshape the offensive line, get a new coaching staff that knows how to formulate a game plan and watch Carson rise to the occasion. If you need further proof, look at game tape of Aaron Rodgers this year and on any given play, see if Carson Wentz has half as much time in the pocket as him. Want 2017 Wentz back ? The biggest difference is the time he has in the pocket.

  14. In 2018 most of the offensive line was injured and did not come back at full strength until week 15. Wentz played behind back ups, Foles played behind starters. Mike Groh was calling plays at that time and not Pederson. Every week Pederson is exposed more and more as a bad coach and is proving he should be fired at the end of the year with his terrible game plans.

  15. Frank Reich went 7-9 in 2019 because his franchise QB retired a week before the season started and then the back up was injured along with the No. 1 WR, RB and TE. before that happened they were 5-2 before that happened and even beat the mighty KC Chiefs who went on to win the Super Bowl. Pederson has no marquis wins against elite teams since Reich left. Pederson ruined the Eagles.

    ********
Jason Kelce lane Johnson Jason Peters issac seamalu Brandon brooks best oline in nfl none of those guys are backups every one of those guys played in every game with Wentz in 2018 and Wentz went 5-6 good job lying and making a fool of yourself Wentz destroyed the franchise foles won in 2018

  17. Giants loss is all on Doug it wasn’t wentz’ fault. Not that he helped…give the ball to miles try something new

  18. Getting hurt during the game and not finishing and then starting the next game is the same as missing a game. Peters did this on a number of occasions as well as Lane Johnson missing time during games due to a nagging knee injury. Again, the line wasn’t fully healthy until week 15. Pederson should have been fired on Monday. Oh, and Wentz was also playing with a fractured vertebrae which was the result of rushing him back due to Foles poor play early in the season.

  19. Eagles oline wa ranked top 1 in nfl they had zero injuries on oline in Wentz games In 2018 and Wentz went 5-6 foles won with same team

  20. Again, for the second time, coming out of the game in the first quarter is the same as missing the game. So it’s not the same offensive line. Also, Golden Tate was added late in the season. It helps to follow the team and not just look at stats. Also, for the second time, in 2018 the Steelers, Browns, Colts and Patriots lines were all rated higher so that’s wrong.

  21. @pmlang none of them came out after the first quarter they all played 4 quarters so your literally just making things up also golden Tate played in more games with Wentz than foles in 2018 so your entire game argument is invalid

  22. Golden Tate played in more games with Wentz in 2018 than foles get Wentz was under 500 and foles won almost every game with Tate

  23. Jason Peters lane Johnson Jason Kelce Brandon brooks issac seamalou played all 4 quarters in every game with Wentz in 2018 and Wentz went 5-6

  24. Golden Tate barely got into the games until week 12 because Pederson admitted, like the idiot he is, that they needed to figure out how to fit him in the offense. Hmmmmmm, sounds like a coaching issue there. Everyone knows Jason Peters hasn’t played all 4 quarters of an entire season since 2016. Stop making stuff up.

  25. Jason Peters missed half the game against Indianapolis and part of the last game against Washington. Lane Johnson missed snaps against New Orleans in week 10 and missed the ENTIRE game against Dallas in week 9. So your argument is invalid.

  26. @pmlang

    *******

Wrong Jason Peters and lane Johnson played in more snaps
per game with wentz than foles also golden tate played in only 38% or less of the snaps with Foles Tate played in at least 60% or more of the snaps per game with wentz

  27. Jason peters played in every single quarter vs New Orleans so your literally just making things up golden tate played in more games and more snaps with wentz so wentz had a healthier team and still went 5-6 vs easiest part of schedule

Right. He said they played every snap of the season. They did not.
