Most NFL players who have been placed on the COVID-19 reserve list have recovered relatively quickly and returned to the field. But Bills tight end Tommy Sweeney is a reminder of how serious this disease can be, even for healthy young people.

Sweeney, who was placed on the COVID-19 reserve list on October 24, has developed myocarditis, a heart condition related to COVID-19, and will miss the rest of the season.

Myocarditis is an inflammation of the heart muscle that can affect the heart’s ability to pump and cause rapid or abnormal heart rhythms. Many viruses can cause myocarditis, and it is a major concern for athletes who contract COVID-19.

The 25-year-old Sweeney was a seventh-round pick of the Bills out of Boston College last year.

  1. Nobodies knows how long people will deal with health issues. Wearing a mask and staying home is a small price. Hope the vaccines they are talking about are legitimate and get here without hold up.

  2. Can’t believe we are coming up on a year and people still don’t see how serious this virus is.

  3. And this is exactly what I was warning people about. I had a similiar case with Bronchitis though less severe. The inflammation from lungs spread to outer layer of heart and caused chest discomfort but thankfully that was it. I was 19 them, I’m 28 now, and I never forgot that and have been using it to warn people when they talk about youth and covid like its some kind of immortality. Don’t play with fire if you don’t have to cause you just may be the one getting burned.

  4. I’m skeptical because of how fast the diagnosis’ are just assumed to fact. And the cause of deaths all seem to be immediate. My Mother passed away in 2003 and it took the county coroner 5 months to provide the family with a cause of death. It feels like to me that this virus is/can be the fuse that is igniting other underlying conditions. I’d like to see some more data on ages, previous health conditions, and other circumstances surrounding the death rate. I’ve known a handful of folks who have contracted this virus and their experiences have ranged from like having a bad cold to a 2 week bout with the flu.

  5. It’s funny that I rarely hear or see anybody write that it isn’t a serious disease. Yet people throw that around to those who choose to live their lives. Sure it affects others. Everything we do affects others.

I wear a mask, I’m on my 8th bottle of sanitizer just in my car, I wash my hands in a way I never have before. But, I go out to eat, I go to bars, I have friends over, I will celebrate a large Thanksgiving and Christmas. In fact at several different locations. I will continue to live my life like today’s my last day. There are too few many days on this earth.

Go live your lives to the fullest. Be cognizant of those around you, take care of the elderly. Take precautions but don’t believe all the hype.

There’s a reason that all Walmart’s, Hone Depot’s, and many other large scale places aren’t having issues and others are. You know the reason? No? Me either, guess who else doesn’t? The CDC, our government, and all other experts.

Until they get their act together and figure this out, I will continue to live my life with my family, while STILL believing this is serious and being mindful of others.

  6. Maybe stories like this will convince some of the irresponsible people traveling for Thanksgiving to stay home. I hope Sweeney makes a full recovery.

  7. ” I’ve known a handful of folks who have contracted this virus and their experiences have ranged from like having a bad cold to a 2 week bout with the flu.”

One of my wife’s sons works with someone who lost 4 people in his family from covid.

I have another acquaintance in the town I live in who lost someone dead to covid as well.

I know another person who had it about as severely as you can with out being admitted to a hospital, several more who had moderate cases, and one who was asymptomatic.

And colds and the flu do not leave your lungs, heart, brain etc with “abnormalities” which may well cause lifelong health problems, or problems later in life. It is not a freaking cold or flu
