Report: A Ravens strength and conditioning coach breached COVID-19 protocol

It was obvious there was more to the story the minute the Ravens released a cryptic statement announcing they have disciplined a staff member for conduct related to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Now comes word from Tom Pelissero of NFL Media that it was a strength and conditioning coach whom the team disciplined for not reporting symptoms and not consistently wearing a mask or tracking device. That may have contributed to the team’s rash of COVID-19 cases.

The Ravens could face discipline from the league, but Pelissero reports that “by proactively disciplining the coach, the Ravens potentially could reduce or avoid discipline they face from the league over an outbreak that forced the postponement of the Thanksgiving night game against the Steelers.”

The league moved the Ravens-Steelers game from Thanksgiving night to Sunday at 1:15 p.m. ET.

Dr. Allen Sills, the league’s chief medical officer, said Wednesday afternoon the NFL had done a “very deep dive” into the Ravens’ situation and determined they will know by Friday whether they have it contained.

“We feel like we have a really good handle on exactly when transmission and how it occurred,” Sills told Judy Battista of NFL Media. “I think we feel like we’re just a couple of days away from being out of that window of vulnerability for that transmission event. So obviously you have to take each day as it comes and look for any new data that may emerge, but right now we simply feel like that as of tomorrow we would not have confidence in going forward, but I think we feel we’re very close to the end of that transmission event. At present, we’re targeting Sunday absent any new information that would change the facts we have right now.”

  1. “We feel like we have a really good handle on exactly when transmission and how it occurred”

Right up to the point that they don’t.

  2. Screw that…ban the offender permanently from league employment and take a 1 and 2 from the team. The fines are like writing a small check to charity for the owners.

  3. Oh boy, those S&C coaches have the most close contact with players out of all the staff. Ravens got some splanin’ to do!

  4. Of course they won’t face league discipline… The Ravens are protected by the league office… and have been for a long time

  5. Are the Ravens going to “proactively” take away their own draft picks? If the league is going to start handing out welfare by penalizing some teams but not others, they’re playing around with the competitive balance of the league. That’s just a huge turn-off. They should take draft picks away from every team that breaks the rules.

  6. You hired him you pay the consequences. Time to mete out some punishment to curtail this activity. Staff needs to understand they have it SO good to be employed by any NFL team.

  7. Whinebaugh’s arrogance once again shines through. He thinks he’s above it all on his self-indulgent mountaintop. Remember this is the team that consistently gets fined for breaking rules around practice time, and its the same team that got the ball rolling around InFlateGate.

    Pure hypocrisy

  8. I am not a Raiders fan but I’d be pretty ticked if the Ravens aren’t penalized draft picks for this. Forbes lists Ravens owner Bisciotti net worth at $4.8 Billion. Is a few million$ in fines an adequate punishment??

  9. “If the Raiders did this they’d forfeit the game and lose a 1st round pick”

If the Rai-duh’s did this, it would be their third major COVID-19 infraction. They’d deserve a lot more punishment than that. And stop playing the victim. It’s embarrassing.

  10. So no one in the organization thought to say “aren’t you supposed to be wearing a mask?”

  11. Raiders and Titans knowingly went against rules. This idiot alone didn’t tell anyone he was symptomatic. The main thing is no one else gets sick. I would assume it was postponed because you don’t want to put that many people incubating on a plane.
