All Broncos quarterbacks ruled out because of COVID-19 exposure

The Broncos are heading into tomorrow’s game against the Saints with an unprecedented challenge: They don’t have a single quarterback.

All of the quarterbacks on the Broncos’ roster have been ruled out of Sunday’s game because they were exposed to COVID-19, according to multiple reports.

Broncos backup quarterback Jeff Driskel has tested positive for COVID-19, and the report says all of the Broncos’ other quarterbacks have been in close contact with Driskel, with no one wearing masks.

It’s unclear what the Broncos will do. It’s not feasible to bring in a quarterback from the outside in less than 24 hours. So unless the NFL postpones the game, the Broncos would have to have a position player line up at quarterback. (No, Broncos General Manager John Elway can’t play.) Broncos running back Royce Freeman appears to be the leading contender.

This NFL season has seen teams go through a number of unique challenges because of the COVID-19 pandemic. But no team has done anything like play a game without a single quarterback. That’s what the Broncos are poised to do tomorrow.

Bring back Tebow. The ratings would be massive.
Let’s not and say we did!

  2. Holy cow! We knew this scenario was feasible, just can’t believe it happened the night before a game.

    ==

Ratings would be high for the same reason Dallas Cowboys games draw so many eyes. Both have a great many interested fans, and both tend to draw millions more who tune in just to root against them.

  4. Tough. Saints were going to play without their LT due to covid. No difference. That’s on the Broncos for not following the guidelines.

  5. This will actually be interesting to watch – like slowing down passing an accident kind of way.

  6. Amazing this could happen and it’s their own fault. To not practice the protocols within close quarters of one another serves them right so they deserved to be punished by not having a roster QB. Sorry, that’s the breaks this year.

  7. Well this is something… They gotta have somebody on the roster that played QB in high school.

  8. I hope no one turns the game on so it gets terrible ratings in order for us, the consumers, to show the NFL it is ridiculous to play the game as scheduled.

Terrible QB. And a terrible team leader according to teammates. And of course terrible baseball player now as well. The obsession with this mediocre player by so many people and the media defies common sense.

  10. For those with an interest in football history, this will likely be the only time in our lifetimes that we see a modern-era NFL team run a single wing or wildcat offense all game.

  11. This can only help them because Drew lock is one of the worst quarterbacks the NFL has ever seen

  12. the NFL would immediately Vance a game if one of its protected teams (packers, chiefs, Seahawks) was affected.

Such BS. What a joke of a season. Total waste. Totally FAKE

  13. Baffling to not forfeit! Maybe they think 4 quarters of wildcat football will mess with the defensive game plan?

  14. Dang. Wheels are starting to come off. Play as you can vs forfeiture or move everything back 1 or 2 weeks. Hate it, but beats no season.

  15. The Bears have been playing without a QB for my entire adult life. If they can do it so can the Broncos

  16. Can’t use/sign a QB not already on the roster. Any newly signed player has to wait until their Covid isolation time has passed. But Tebow, or Colin would have been great.

  17. Wait… the Ravens get TWO postponements but the Broncos have to play? Sounds like Fraudger Goodell to me.

I hear some guy named Colin something-or-other is looking for a job…

So are about 60 other ex-QBs and 100 unsigned free agents. He’s old news.

  19. Can’t believe they aren’t clamoring for Colin to be signed overnight…

And of course the saints get another favorable bounce. That team is going to get exposed so bad on the playoffs. Again.

  20. Bring Kaepernick in, have him do handoffs, rollouts and play action. The fact that this hasn’t happened already shows you he is right about being blackballed

  21. It’s been confirmed Game 5 of the 1997 NBA finals, Michael Jordan did not have the flu, Dr. Fauci & Johns Hopkins, says he had………COVID-19!

  22. I find it surprising that they would not have had their quarterbacks separated from one another just for this reason. At least one of them should have been cordoned off from the others. Close quarters with one another makes no sense as with all of the possibilities of exposure, contact tracing, etc.

  23. If they were not wearing masks when they were required to wear them, then let them pay the penalty. If they were doing everything right and it still happened then they should postpone if at all possible.

  24. Hmmm … I wonder if any of the sports books, legal and otherwise, has a betting line on the Broncos emergency QB and the emergency backup.

  25. So the NFL thinks this is competitive balance to have the broncos play on less than a days notice without any QB? Sure makes sense, has the game been taken off the board in the casinos yet?

  26. Other than the short period of time when Peyton Manning controlled the organization, John Elway’s tenure running the team has been horrendous.

  27. Sorry NFL….if the Ravens can get games moved twice there is no reason the Broncos should have to play with no QB with less than 24 hrs notice. The 3 other QBs tested negative on top of it all! Give me a break.

  28. “ I hope no one turns the game on so it gets terrible ratings in order for us, the consumers, to show the NFL it is ridiculous to play the game as scheduled.”

Bucs @ Chiefs on at the same time so no one was gonna watch the game anyway.

  29. Looks like college QB, current receiver Kendall Hinton is getting called up.

Fangio can show his coaching chops here, as they still may have a better offense than the Jets.

Record in final season as NFL starting QB: Tebow 8-5(w/playoff win), Kaepernick 1-10

What a ridiculous comparison. The team Tebow played for was one of the top teams in the NFL with the addition of a good quarterback, and went to the Super bowl a year after that. Kaepernick’s team was on a major downturn after the drama of losing the coach who led them to the Super bowl and had lost several key players.

I get it; you don’t like Kaepernick…just say that instead of making comparisons without context to make him look bad.

  31. Sounds like the Bronco QBs are taking the Trump approach to the pandemic in that it’s a hoax and a flu and nothing to worry about. Rule Number 1 is never listen to Trump.

    ——-

Uh, no it doesn’t. Any free agent has to stay out for 10 days before entering the facility. By that time the people already on the team who know the system will be back.

  33. The BEST QB isn’t even going to be on the field playing so why can’t the Saints just Loan them Jameis Winston, I bet you that Saints favored by 6 would evaporate in a hurry.*just saying*

  34. itll be alright…they postponed for bal when LJ tested positive they postponed the game. im sure theyll do it for the broncos

  35. Assuming the Bronco’s QBs were doing everything correctly (in terms of wearing masks and such) then maybe the answer is for the league to tenetively reschedule the game for week 18 (the bye week). Then if playing the game can change the playoff picture you play it. But if won’t then you cancel it.

  36. What a rip off for the paying fans.
    Oh wait, there aren’t any.
I will be curious to read the box score.
I expect a boring blow out.

  37. The Saints picked up former Broncos QB Trevor Siemian this past week. A little late to trade him to the Broncos now of course

Go get Al Bundy. He threw for 4 TD’s in game for the Polk High Panthers.

    21 2 Rate This
Al Bundy was a RB. He RAN for 4 TDs.

  39. Waiting for the drum call to take picks away like the call went out when the Raiders had a Covid breakout.

  40. Kinda mind blowing that if they aren’t stashing a QB away from the others intentionally that they aren’t following every precaution possible to avoid this exact scenario. Even following precautions things can happen, but if you’re not doing everything in your power to avoid this scenario and then it happens, you can’t really complain.

For those with an interest in football history, this will likely be the only time in our lifetimes that we see a modern-era NFL team run a single wing or wildcat offense all game.
    ——————————————————————————————
The Chiefs of the late 70s (And yes, that is considered modern era) under Marv Levy ran the single wing as their default offense.

  42. This is stupid. If they didn’t test positive, let them play. Quit being so damn ridiculous about this.

  43. The NFL needs to bite the bullet and have a week 18. Any game where there’s been one positive Covid test this week should be postponed to week 18. That way, teams who made it through their schedule without any postponements could get a bye since they’ll add an 8th playoff team. Playing a game with a one day notice that you won’t have QBs is a competitive disadvantage. To allow teams to play tomorrow but they can’t come to the facility for the next two days is irresponsible. There will be transmission in the games and on the sidelines. It’s inevitable since this week people mostly were around their families trying to celebrate thanksgiving, possibly unbeknownst to each other transmitting the virus. The 9ers don’t even have a stadium for God knows how long. They need to regroup as a league tomorrow, not play games. Otherwise, league play being suspended indefinitely much like the NBA earlier this year will be imminent. More money lost that way than just adding an additional week.

  44. This is getting out of hand. Wonder if any teams at all have a qb in quarantine. Not being sarcastic but would like to see the broncos just throw their hands up and say oh well since we have no qb’s well forfeit the game. Love to see the league react to it.

Tebow would be an upgrade from any QB currently on Denver’s roster.

  46. They made the Saints play a whole season when they didn’t have a stadium and had to practice in a parking lot in their street clothes. If the Saints can play without a home, the Broncos can play without a quarterback.

  47. Mark Twain said “Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.”

  48. Weren’t teams given the option of having 1 covid qb or something. I feel like I read that the bills were using jake Fromm or someone else in that role. I’m actually shocked the leave didn’t make this mandatory just in case

  49. Every player is in “close contact” with every other player on their team.

They all have a circle before the game with their hands touching. They are all in the locker room. 30 people rush into end zone after a pick. They all celebrate a big play on the sidelines.

The NFL protocols make no sense.

I am not a Broncos fan, but this is completely unfair to a team that is still alive in the postseason race.

  50. Didn’t the Saints play a special teams player starting at QB for the first time in his NFL career, just last week? No sympathy for Denver’s shortsighted COVID protocols. Play the game!

  51. It’s all fake news, right? Ryquell Armstead’s career may br done – NFL hiding that – is he going to due?

  52. Broncos backup quarterback Jeff Driskel has tested positive for COVID-19, and the report says all of the Broncos’ other quarterbacks have been in close contact with Driskel, with no one wearing masks.

With all that is at stake I have no idea why these guys feel there is no need to wear masks when around each other. I wonder if Denver will face consequences for this….other than basically having no chance in the game on Sunday…but then again, they had no chance against the Saints anyway.

  53. For those of you who think the game should be forfeited, remember if that happens players DO NOT GET PAID on either team!

  54. I’m tell’n ya…the NFL hasn’t seen anything yet. It’s going to get worse before it gets better. Skipped weeks and forfeits are closer than anyone will admit.

  55. The game should be postponed until Tuesday. Forcing Denver to play with an emergency QB is bad for business. The league needs to be fair when dealing covid incidents and not give special treatment to any team. Pitt/Bal got moved due to COVID, so the Den/NO should be moved for the same reason. The Saints are a popular team and it will draw ratings as the late game on Tuesday night. It also gives the Broncos time to sign a free agent QB in case none of their QBs can go on Tuesday.

  56. Pat Shurmur still will probably Throw the ball way to much.
This is why you put a guy on your roster like a Ray Guy, A Hines Ward, Joe Webb, Terrell Pryor, Josh Cribbs or others who were good Athletes or played QB in High School or College.
Every team should have a Jack of all trades type of player. In 1965 the Colts had to play Tom Matte at QB in a playoff game they lost 13-10. Two weeks before the Colts lost 42-27 to the same Packers.
Shurmur is a very bad coach a bad OC/ Playcaller
The only time he ran the ball was in 2017 when he was about to get fired for not running
it when the 5-2 Vikings went 3-6 on his watch to end the 2016 Season.
In the 4 wins for the Broncos one they should have lost 52.4% pass
the game they should have lost was the 43 pass play 16 run for 108 yards against
the Chargers. In the Broncos 6 losses 65.4% pass.
They need to hope whoever plays QB is good at play action.
    Dan Reeves and Tom Landry
    each switched QBs every play
Landry with Stauback and Morton while Reeves did it with Maddox and Moore
The Broncos avg 4.4 yards per rush
Draw up plays in the dirt if you have to.

Royce Freeman 1-1 for 26 yards and a TD in College
The Punter Sam Martin is 2-2 passing with Detroit
Probably should have signed Kyle Shurmur as the Emergency, Emergency QB.
    Then Fired his Dad.
They should probably look for Darrell Doucette who was Tremendous at making plays
in that Flag league a few years ago.
Seriously Activate Pat Shurmur who was a Center in College
and make him play QB as Punishment for all the pass plays he calls.

  57. Playing without a qb? Now they know how the Bears feel every week.

But, all joking aside, didn’t they postpone a game or two earlier in the season because the team’s qb had covid? I guess the Bronco’s aren’t one of the leagues’ darlings so they don’t get the same courtesy?
