Broncos have a quarterback mess, and only themselves to blame

When Broncos backup quarterback Jeff Driskel first landed on injured reserve, coach Vic Fangio expressed confidence that Driskel’s condition wouldn’t knock out the team’s other quarterbacks.

“The other quarterbacks were only on there minimal amounts, like two minutes and some seconds — four minutes,” Fangio told reporters on Thursday. “That’s over a three- or four-day period. They thoroughly checked those guys that were on the two minutes, three minutes, four minutes, and they came back and said nobody else needs to go on the list and they cleared us to have normal activities and normal practice today.”

Things have changed since then, dramatically. All Broncos quarterbacks have been ruled out for the game against the Saints, due directly to the fact that they were in close contact with Driskel — without masks.

Broncos tight end Noah Fant has chimed in regarding the decision to compel the team to proceed with no available quarterbacks.

I’m not one to complain,” Fant said on Twitter, before complaining, “but y’all can’t possibly send us into a game without a QB. The most important position to a offense. We don’t even got a back up.”

It’s their own fault for not having a backup, however. They could have, as we suggested months ago, kept a quarterback in quarantine. They didn’t. Now, they’ll have to go forward on Sunday without a quarterback.

If nothing else, it will be a valuable lesson for all other teams regarding the importance of ensuring that players take all COVID-19 protocols seriously. For the Broncos and G.M. John Elway, playing without a quarterback isn’t exactly unprecedented. After all, the Broncos once had Tim Tebow as their starter.

  1. With no players hospitalized, why the overeaction? Let those with negative tests play.

  2. Saints still need to be on their toes. Could be the ultimate “trap” game. Don’t eat the cheese!

  3. I’ve already said it but whether you agree with masks or not, the fact that they didn’t wear them and were in close contact means that in the eyes of the NFL the Broncos did not do everything in their power to prevent this from happening. With that being the case whether they reschedule the game or not, the Broncos can’t complain.

  4. Actually it’s not the Broncos that have the mess, it’s the NFL that has created a large mess for themselves. The league has moved heaven and earth to delay, postpone and reschedule other games this season. In just deciding this game will go ahead without the Broncos having a QB, and giving the Saints a guaranteed win, the league is screwing with the competitive balance of the NFC. How do you think the Packers, Seahawks and Rams feel about the Saints being given the freebie while they all try to catch the Saints?

Sure the Saints probably would have won anyways, but there’s always the any given Sunday aspect in the NFL, the league has thrown that out the window here. And it looks particularly worse considering they’ve already moved the Steelers/Ravens game twice this week.

As for the Broncos, they weren’t making the playoffs anyways, so now they just collect the L and a higher draft position. Not really a mess for them.

  5. The FLU DOES NOT kill thousands of people in the middle of summer. Some people aren’t smart enough to understand that.

  6. “For the Broncos and G.M. John Elway, playing without a quarterback isn’t exactly unprecedented. After all, the Broncos once had Tim Tebow as their starter.“

    Mike going savage.

  7. Lets be honest, how good would the “5th string” QB be?
Like what level QB would they realistically have been able to come up with?
Christian Hackenberg? Lets say you have Christian Hackenberg instead of a RB, it will help, but how much?
You odds of winning go from 2% to 6%?

This is about as much of a trap game as I am a Broncos QB. The Saints could start Archie Manning tomorrow and still win by 14.

  9. Saints once played an entire season without a home stadium and had to practice on a paved parking lot in their street clothes.

    Suck it up buttercups!

And 15 years later their fans are still complaining about it. But better hearing about that than the complaining about a missed PI call.

  11. If ya been a saints fan for 40+ years you will not take it for granted this is already a win. They have a history of finding some incredible ways to lose when least expected.

  12. I wonder what the money spread did after it was announced that Broncos will be running the wildcat all afternoon. SMH

  13. Mike, Cam Newton tests positive postpone the game; Lamar Jackson postpone game. But not Denver Helps Denver with draft position but ruins competitive balance.

Tebow was more of a QB than Kapernick ever was.

So it’s OK to be a right wing fundamentalist SJW? Guy never really tried to fit into the NFL, except on his own terms. But he’s white and keeps his hair cut short.
The guy was a terrible QB, couldn’t carry K’s jock even though he got chance after chance. K just went to a Super Bowl as a player, and has donated millions since he’s been blackballed.
People will literally build statues to Kaepernick. Tebow will just have to build his own.

Actually Kaepernick was a far better quarterback. And an utterly despicable human being.

  16. Kaepernick might have someone build him statues. Tebow himself has built at least Hospital in an impoverished country to save people’s lives and every year sponsors a national event for special needs children.

  17. And 15 years later their fans are still complaining about it. But better hearing about that than the complaining about a missed PI call.

and then someday when your team gets shafted by the league, you’ll finally wise up

  18. The NFL’s Covid memo to teams last week had a sentence in ALL CAPS about masks … the key word in the sentence was “SHOULD” (not MUST) wear a mask. Regardless, the players and coaching staff screwed up, but the NFL doesn’t have legal standing to do what they did given the wording of the memo.

  19. You think the nfl would force Rodgers or mahomes out of a game if they didn’t wear a mask? Remember, neither of the other 2 QBs for the broncos have tested positive. They going to keep them out next week too?

Jesus people, the guys are in a HUDDLE and not wearing masks, and I don’t think they’re all 6 feet apart from one another either. Stop this BS about not following the rules when the rules are IMPOSSIBLE to follow for a football team and not enforced even on game day when the spread of a virus will be at its MAX. Players on the sidelines aren’t even wearing masks. Oh, and football involves TACKLING. BLOCKING. It is a sport where following these covid rules is literally impossible.

The virtue signaling here is incredible. You can’t play football and also contain a virus while playing football. Impossible.

  20. What’s the big deal? The Broncos have been playing without a QB since Manning retired!

    I’ll show myself out…

  21. NFL Network reported the other QB’s were not only in contact with Driskel but were in contact with him without a mask.
    All Broncos fault here.

  22. Expect to see the Broncos run the wildcat tomorrow. What else do they have??? Break out the trick plays…..

  23. I’m a Raiders fan, and even I feel bad for the Broncos. Goodell and the NFL are bending over backwards for the media darling Ravens, but sticking it really bad to the Broncos.

That is true and didn’t they make it to the playoffs with him…LOL

And even beat the Steelers while they were in it, before being knocked out by the Patriots.

  25. Well if you follow the protocols, the league is lenient, if you don’t, your practice squad WR will be your QB.

Lots of teams are doing their best to follow the protocol whether it’s easy or not. The Broncos clearly did not.

No sympathy for them and I would have no sympathy for the Falcons either.

  26. This isn’t entirely the Broncos fault. The league screwed them over with not rescheduling the game. Especially when the NFL had no issue rescheduling the Patriots-Broncos game last month because Cam Newton tested positive for COVID and screwed the Broncos of a Bye Week. No issue rescheduling the Thanksgiving game between the Steelers-Ravens. I bet if Patrick Mahomes caught COVID, NFL would have no issue rescheduling there game as well.

  27. Um, there already IS a statue of Tebow. In Gainesville, where he won the Heisman. I’m not aware of an Kaepernick ones.

  28. I don’t understand the need for the low blow on Tebow. I guess it makes some people feel good to get a chuckle out of saying derogatory things about other people. Especially someone as genuinely nice of a human being a Tim Tebow is.
