Could Pittsburgh be on the front end of an outbreak?

Now that the Ravens-Steelers game has moved from Thursday to Sunday to Tuesday, it’s not yet time to exhale regarding whether the game can be played on Tuesday.

Although the situation in Baltimore seems to finally be getting under control, with only one new positive test result on Friday, the Steelers could be on the front end of their own outbreak.

The news that three Pittsburgh players landed on the COVID-19 reserve list on Friday, while easy to miss in the seemingly endless stream of COVID-induced roster moves, could be a sign that the Steelers are in the early throes of the same kind of mess that plagued the Ravens all week.

Although it hasn’t been announced or reported that Isaiah Buggs, Stephon Tuitt, or Jerald Hawkins actually tested positive, someone in the organization apparently has it. Which means that more can have it. Which means that more can get it.

As the Ravens learned, it can spread like wildfire.

So if Buggs, Tuitt, and/or Hawkins landed on the COVID-19 reserve list because they have COVID-19, it makes sense to monitor the daily reports of additional players testing positive or being placed on the COVID-19 reserve list in order to see whether the Steelers will have an outbreak of their own.

If they do, the third postponement of the Ravens-Steelers game — the one that finally sends the game to Week 18 — could be attributed not to the Ravens but the Steelers. Which would be ironic to say the least, given the various public complaints made this week by Steelers players regarding the first two postponements.

  1. The NFL will act fast on this action because they have taken flack for all the changes to Ravens game and no fines or any punishment on how the Ravens have handled protocol

  2. I think you would be hard pressed to find an NFL fan that would be against moving this game to week 17. Fans want the full 16 game regular season. We’re so close. Just do the right thing.

  3. Would definitely serve them right if that would happen, this team is talented but man they are insufferable

  4. I am looking for a list of active NFL players who have been hospitalized with Covid-19? Of those (zero??) how many deaths? When will “protect the vulnerable” prevail.

  5. Let’s see, the Raiders OL gets quarantined, the DL gets quarantined, a few test positive and the NFL moves their game forward 4 hours. This is inconsistent. Trent Brown goes out and the league wants them to play right away. Pittsburgh gets a pimple and the world comes to an end.

  6. This is ridiculous! Unacceptable! Outrageous! The Steelers should be fined draft picks! Tomlin should be fined! If the game gets moved because of the Steelers blatant disregard of the rules and not following protocols they should be forced to forfeit! They should be forced to pay the Ravens salaries!

  7. Stop blaming the teams regardless of who you are a fanatic for. The expected resurgence is here, hospitals are being stressed to capacity and we are worrying about playing a football game? The safety of the players, coaches, and staff should come first not TV money. Suspend the season and work together to test for anti-bodies, get vaccinated and/or play and finish the season in a bubble. Fan attendance and home field has now been rendered moot. Blame a contagious virus that has impacted everyone economically. The NFL must protect all its employees or be culpable for the results

  8. Thanks to the absurdity of Thanksgiving travelers, we can only expect a massive spike in cases across the country, and our favorite players on our favorite teams will not be immune

  9. The NFL should suspend the regular season immediately and restart in mid January in a bubble scenario like the NBA, its the common sense thing to do at this point!

I would be against that, as the Steelers are scheduled to play the Browns during week 17, and the Ravens are scheduled to play to play the Bengals.

  11. People have short memories. The Steelers have already had a player (Vance McDonald) and a staff member test positive for COVID, the week prior to the Bengals game. That week they also had 4 players on the COVID reserve list due to close contact with McDonald, including Ben Roethlisberger. Ben did not practice all week. The Steelers are no strangers to the effects of this illness.

  12. Sadly Goodell is seeing this virus effecting his favorites now for not following the protocol. So now the rules change to accommodate them, the heck with those others!

  13. The Steelers like most normal teams who adhere to proper Covid19 protocol have had an occasional player or two pop up on the Covid list, and comparing this to the Ravens carelessness is silly. Much ado about nothing.

  14. The season should have never been started. I like Ohio State, but isnt it ironic that one of biggest complainers about then not playing, that would be you, Todd Day, gets COVID. Nobody wants to listen to the experts, who by the way isnt Roger Goodel or the SEC.

  15. …or the three players just put on the list could just be ‘close contacts’ like the vast majority of the Steelers Covid cases have been.

According to ESPN, Jacksonville Jaguars running back Ryquell Armstead (23) has been hospitalized twice with COVID-19 and has already been ruled out for the season. Armstead was placed on the NFL’s reverse/COVID-19 list in September and has since had a “variety” of complications and “significant” upper-respiratory issues.

But it’s only one guy…and he did not die, so what’s all the fuss?

  17. Until they announce they actually have C19, I’m taking it as precautionary move. There is a scenario where none of them have C19. If a staffer/player came in and said they were exposed, the prudent thing to do would be to put the close contact people in the protocol. At least that’s how it’s SUPPOSED to work. As I recall, they were very upfront with McDonald in regards to the fact that he tested positive, so far this is just players being on the list.

  18. OK. I’VE HAD IT. THE NFL WAS ABLE TO GET HALF OF THE SEASON PLAYED. NOW IT’S TIME FOR INTELLIGENT COMMON SENSE TO PREVAIL. THE CANNED CHEERING IS OFFENSIVE AND IMPROPERLY USED, THE STADIUMS ARE EMPTY, THE PLAYERS ARE FALLING LIKE FLIES, AND NO MATTER WHAT PROTCAUSE THEY PUT IN PLACE IT WON’T WORK. THE GAMES ARE SO DISINTERESTING THAT I DON’T EVEN READ ABOUT MY HOME TEAM. NOW THAT THE FANS GOT THEIR TASTE OF FOOTBALL SHUT IT DONE. THE WHOLE SEASON IS MEANINGLESS, ANY WAY. IT WILL BE FULL OF ASTERISKS. NO TRUE CHAMPION BECAUSE TEAMS DIDN’T PLAY NORMAL ROSTERS. CUT YOUR LOSES NFL. YOU LOST..CALL IT QUITS.

  19. For anyone that thinks that the NFL will cancel or do anything of the sorts isn’t using their brain. We are at week 12 of 17. 5 more regular season weeks and then playoffs. There is absolutely ZERO chance the NFL cancels or postpones the season now, or ever. It was never a possibility and it won’t be in the talks. Not sure if anyone really understands the sheer magnitude of the NFL not playing. We are talking BILLIONS of dollars lost. BILLIONS not Millions. There are contingencies in place for these games to be moved or rescheduled. Canceling the season will never be brought up in discussions.

  20. Not buying it until it actually happens. All NFL teams need to run a tighter ship to make sure this season finishes like it’s supposed to.

If an investigation reveals that the Steelers outbreak was caused by staff blatantly disregarding protocols, like strength coaches not reporting Covid symptoms or wearing masks when they should be, then yeah — that seems reasonable. What’s your point?

Given how much COVID’s spreading again and the fact that it has a chance to cripple the season if it gets out of control, there should be stiff penalties for people (especially coaches, who are in leadership roles) who disregard rules and teams who permit it.

  22. For those who said COVID doesn’t hospitalize NFL players:

The Jacksonville Jaguars RB Ryquell Armstead is expected to miss the rest of this season due to complications from Covid. HE played 16 games last year and with Fournette gone he would have seen playing time.

The other question to ask is how many players have been infected. Its not like 1,600 players have bene infected, its in the dozens. One hospitalization out of 100 infected healthy young men is a small sample size, but if that ratio holds then if the entire NFL caught it there would be 16 long hospitalizations and a death. And some of the infected players who weren’t hospitalized said it took a lot out of them and took a while to come back.

Its not as deadly as we feared but it’s still a serious disease.

  23. Had they played the day the game was originally scheduled then it wouldnt have been an issue. Now the Steelers will be without one of their best defensive players because the league decides to give the Ravens preferential treatment. Pittsburgh should have had 8 days to get over this, not 2.

  24. Geniuses, if the game was played when it should have been, it would have hit at a perfect time for Steelers. Think minions, think. No double standard here. Steelers just got screwed some more. Not a Steelers fan. Tradionally have liked Ravens way more.

  26. I would not wish COVID on anyone, and I am not wishing it on the Steelers now. However, I do find it somewhat humorous that Pittsburgh had multiple players going nuclear on Twitter about the delay of the game. And now, a few days later they might find themselves in the same spot…

  27. If the game had been played when it was supposed to be played but wasn’t because of Ravens screw up this wouldn’t have been an issue.

Humorous? Did you laugh a few weeks ago when they had 2 people with COVID and 4 others on COVID reserve? Bonus humor for the fact that there was not even a whisper of changing the schedule that week to accommodate the Steelers. Nor should there have been.

I do not blame the NFL for delaying this game as the disease seemed to be spreading rapidly, and I wish the Steelers players would have kept their complaints in-house. However, this meme that the Steelers have never had to deal with players on the COVID list is getting old, and is not really funny. Selective memory is a strange thing.

The only thing I find to be unfair in all of this is moving the Ravens game next week to Monday while keeping the Steelers game on Sunday. What’s up with that?

  29. The NBA and NHL were 3/4 of the way thru thier seasons too. There is no way that waiting until January would be the end of the world. I dont’ know how many dome/warm weather teams there are off the of my head, but they could do a bubble if they had to.

  30. There is one thing I’ve gathered from reading the last week of Covid in Football news: football fans are really really really really really dumb. This place is a cesspool of stupidity.

I know, right. It’s always astounding to me the number of people that are so incredibly ignorant of what is so obvious to people like us. I mean it’s so obvious we don’t even need to specify our position because, well why should we have to? It’s just so obvious.

  32. Some who have caught covid-19 but did not die are still suffering from significant effects. As one local doctor stated, it may not have caused a person to die now, but it will have shortened their lifespan significantly, resulting in death within next 5 years.

  33. Kill the season. 10-0 steelers would get the black and yellow juice stomped out of them against a healthy 49er team. This is pure bs.steeler fans don’t even bother with your biased response.

Imagine defending the intellectual integrity of the comment section of this site… or thinking anyone comes here to make defensible/arguable points. Also, there’s nothing more to specify – the comments here on covid are downright dumb across the board. Nuff said. What more do you need specifics on, guy?
