Jon Gruden calls Raiders penalties “a recipe for disaster”

The Raiders were on the wrong side of a rout on Sunday as the Falcons whipped them 43-6 in Atlanta.

Plenty went wrong on the way to that final score, including four Derek Carr turnovers and 11 penalties that totaled 141 yards. They included a roughing the kicker call that wiped out a missed field goal and a facemask call on cornerback Nevin Lawson that erased an interception by linebacker Nick Kwiatkoski.

After the game, Raiders head coach Jon Gruden lamented the way those mistakes set the stage for the loss.

“We’ve had a couple of games where we have been penalized,” Gruden said, via the team’s website. “Roughing the passer, roughing the kicker, we had some holding calls, illegal hands to the face. You fall behind in the down of distance, you give teams free shots, it’s a recipe for disaster and that’s what you saw today.”

The Raiders will need to be much cleaner against the Jets next Sunday if they want to ensure they avoid an even more embarrassing loss than the one they absorbed this weekend.

  1. The Raiders are never going to compete with Mahomes in the playoffs. Once the kid signed the 10 year, Gruden should have immediately submitted his resignation.

  2. The refs didn’t allow Hill to grain 200+ yards in the first quarter. The 1st quarter? Might want to check in on your team John. The refs already know they stink.

  3. Correction on my previous post. Wrong stats/game. Raiders need to focus on what they can control and John should not be making excuses for poor play.

  4. Refs were agaisnt the raiders from the start, kots of bogus calls today that killed drives

  5. Gruden the genius was TRADED by Al Davis to the Bucs. He traded a coach. Gruden went on to win a SB with a team that Dungy built up. Once given the opportunity to run the team, he promptly turned them into average. Canned. Out of football for a decade. Signed to a 10 ear deal without coaching one game for the team. Got rid of all of the talent. Put his stamp on the team. They’re failing again. Jack Del Rio did better.

  6. If you are going to give Dungy the credit then you have to give Gruden for the Raiders making to the SB. Either way Gruden’s team was in the SB. If Robbins didn’t go AWOL, it would have been a whole different SB.

  7. Offensive line finally failed today. Too many injuries and just plain got knocked out today. Nothing more nothing less. Still in the hunt. Put it behind you and move on
