Report: Carson Wentz lost confidence after team drafted Jalen Hurts

Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers shrugged at his team’s decision to draft quarterback Jordan Love. Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz has had a different reaction to his team’s decision to select quarterback Jalen Hurts.

Jay Glazer of FOX Sports reports that Wentz lost confidence due to the arrival of Hurts via round two of the 2020 draft. It’s not an isolated theory but a common feeling among those within the organization.

If that’s the case, using Hurts won’t help Wentz’s confidence. Maybe that’s why coach Doug Pederson has resisted using Hurts more extensively.

The Eagles have been sticking with Wentz in large part because they’re stuck with him, at least through 2021. Still, at some point the discussion needs to happen regarding whether they should simply pay him to not play, and ride with someone who will perform at a higher level.

  1. Yet Aaron Rodgers is having one of the best years of his career. That should tell Philly’s front office everything they need to know about whether they have a franchise QB or not.

  2. I feel for this kid. He suffered a catastrophic injury and now his team has selected a new QB in the second round. What successful org drafts another QB in the 2nd round when they’ve already made a massive financial commitment to their 27 year-old starter? It’s one thing to draft the 37 year-old Rodgers’ successor in the early rounds (still not a smart move imo given AR’s performance and the need for more weapons to support him, but defensible). It’s quite another to use a high pick to draft a QB for no discernible reason to look for over CW’s shoulder. Nevermind the fact that the Eagles missed an opportunity to bolster the offensive line or pass rush.

  3. If bringing in competition hurts his confidence, he was never going to lead the Eagles to the promised land anyway. They drafted a QB because he wasn’t performing well in the first place. Suggesting the decision to draft a QB is a reason for his even worse performance this year is a weak excuse.

Time to start looking for a new franchise QB because this guy isn’t the answer, unfortunately.

  4. We Drafted Garoppolo…tommy got PISSED and proved that after the Monday night debacle in Arrowhead.

Packers draft Love. Rodgers has been going OFF.

Seahwaks signed Flynn, then drafted Wilson in 2012. Wilson took that starting job.

ITS CALLED MOTIVATION. And its apparent Wentz does not have it in him.

  5. How many Quarterbacks did the Patriots draft during the Brady era? Tom never copped an attitude.

  6. Philly has a big problem because they clearly have a guy or multiple guys on this roster that hate Wentz. They’ve been undermining him for 3 straight years to the media. Wentz needs a fresh start. Philly is too toxic.

  7. The Rodgers/Wentz comparison is a bad one. Rodgers has no reason to feel insecure. His legacy is set. Wentz is still getting started. Pete Carroll has been very cognizant of this concern in the way he has dealt with Russell Wilson. He’s bent over backwards to make sure Wilson knows he’s the guy. This approach reportedly irked Richard Sherman big time and was a factor in Sherman’s bad behavior and ultimate departure from Seattle but it has proven to be the correct approach.

  8. As if watching his back up win a SB wasn’t bad enough…instead of getting him Justin Jefferson they draft Reagor and Hurts…

  9. After watching every one of Carson’s games at ndsu they need to change up the play calling to what made HIM successful even if it was at at fcs. To play devils advocate a little bit, a little fire and competition should just make him better but everybody different. I still dream the vikes bring him in at some point to finish his career while he and Lance battle it out, bison fan can dream right!?

  10. Wentz hasn’t been right since the clowney hit. If it had happen to Rogers they would have banned clowney for life

  11. I’d take a one hit wonder that comes with a ring over no hit wonders like 31 other teams that year.

  12. I like Carson, I think he’s a good guy, and has most of the tools needed to be a solid franchise quarterback.

But confidence is a big thing with quarterbacks.

The start to his career gave him plenty of it. Then the injury. Then the Foles situation. Then Frank Reich leaving. Then Howie Roseman swinging and missing on pass catchers annually. And then they draft a running (quarter)back a round or two early. And then Doug Pederson lost all of his Game IQ.

A change of scenery will be good for Wentz.

  13. In pro team sports, there’s always someone on the horizon wanting to take your job. It’s just the way it is. If Wenz really had those concerns, he’s in the wrong business.

He couldn’t even earn the ring himself.

  16. That’s a worse issue than his terrible play. He’s too S. O. F. T. SOFT to be a starting QB

  17. leTS SEE IN 2018 AND 2019 HE HAD 49 TOUCH DOWNS AND 14 ints.. AND WAS THE 7TH RANKED QB

As well coming into the year Mot td passes through first 56 games
    Marino- 119
    Unitas-103
    Warner-102
    Stafford-95
    Luck-94
    Peyton-94
    Carson palmer-92
    Wentz-90

He also had the second best int/td radiot in history of the nfl

  18. If he’s that fragile then just bench him and play Hurts. Then get rid of him in the off-season. Unreal. Wentz is softer than Charmin.

  19. ENOUGH! Seriously, enough…idk who’s worse, Wentz or Pederson but as an eagles fan, I’m SICK of watching Wentz hold the ball. Bench him already, at least it’ll be interesting to watch hurts

Wait, I thought the goal of NFL coaches was to win football games. It seems as if Pederson is more interested in coddling his QB so he doesn’t get his feelings hurt even more. Pederson should be worried about saving his job. If Wentz is that mentally weak then I don’t see how you can’t put in Hurts and see what he can do. Then you tell Wentz if he doesn’t get his head out of his backside, the remaining $78.5M in salary and $21M in bonuses on his contract are gone. That should give Wentz over one hundred million reasons to be motivated. Still, I’d get rid of him. He’s obviously not the long-term answer since he’s so mentally fragile. Once you lose it, chances are you’ll never get it back.

  21. @ sp1ll3rf0r3v3r,

Well that’s where you and I differ, I think a QB behind the starting QB no matter who that starter is pushes the starter to be better and if the starter can’t handle having a good QB behind them then they don’t deserve to be the starter, PERIOD! This is the NFL the creme dela creme of football, the best of the best and if a QB can’t handle that pressure then he can’t handle the pressure of the really big games either and it’s time to move on to someone that can. Personally I would have never given Wentz the big contract so soon or any QB for that matter. I’d make any player(not just QB’s) play out their contract and then talk new contract because this happens all too often, the player gets the big contract and then they start to loaf or don’t play up to par and I’d also put more incentives in there for them to get the big bucks, not just give it to them in salary or hand them a ton of guaranteed money. You don’t need a top QB to win a SB and it’s been proven many times in the last 20yrs as QB’s on their rookie contract have won 10 of the last 21 SB’s. And remember 2001 when Dilfer got a ring because of the Ravens run game and outstanding D? Or how about the Seattle D holding Peyton’s offense that averaged 33PPG to just 8 points in the SB or the Pats D holding the Falcons scoreless in the 4th quarter and OT?

Build a team with a good OL, a couple good RB’s and a stout D and you’ll win more than your share of games, remember the old saying, “offense sells tickets, defense wins championships” and even in this era of the offense scoring so much it’s still true!

  22. “If bringing in competition hurts his confidence, he was never going to lead the Eagles to the promised land anyway.”
    ——————————–
Indeed. People in all walks of life use such a thing as motivation. “I’ll show them” will serve him better than to pout.

  23. Carson Wentz’s ego don’t mean jack; winning football games does. And you’re not gonna win football games with the North Dakota State scrub turning the ball over left and right. Doug Pederson did the Philadelphia Eagles’ players, fans and ownership a disservice by not benching Carson Wentz much sooner. If Wentz were a better QB, they wouldn’t have drafted Jalen Hurts in the first place. The Dallas Cowboys didn’t draft a QB early because they already had a great QB in Dak Prescott. And that was despite the fact that he did not have a long-term contract. And speaking of contracts; Howie Roseman should be fired just for giving Wentz that outrageous contract, let alone his bad draft picks. Wentz was never an elite QB. He had one good year and couldn’t even stay healthy that season. Then they gave him that ridiculous contract with two years left on his rookie deal. What was the rush? He couldn’t go anywhere. Now they have to hope some other team is dumb enough to trade for a turnover-prone, inaccurate QB with a cap-crushing contract.

Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson are two of the best QB’s in the league and future Hall of Famers. Carson Wentz is not anywhere near their level. It would be insane for the Seattle Seahawks to draft a QB when Russell Wilson is only 32 years-old and still playing at a ridiculously high level. Richard Sherman is always complaining about something, so i wouldn’t give him any credence. He wants everything to be about him all the time. But whether Seattle “bent over backwards” for Russell Wilson or not, the bottom line is they never would have taken a QB early in the draft because there was never any doubt about his greatness on the field. The Eagles took Jalen Hurts in the second round because they saw the erosion in his game that everyone else saw. In the final game of a mediocre 2019 season, Wentz had to struggle against a terrible Giants team just to back into the playoffs. Then he gets knocked out of that playoff game with a concussion. You seem to be implying that the Eagles should treat Carson Wentz like the Seahawks treat Russell Wilson when Wentz isn’t nearly as good. Maybe if Wentz was better the last two seasons, the Eagles would be treating him like Russell Wilson. He certainly wasn’t complaining when the Eagles gave him all that money after one good year.
