Mike Tomlin: “We’re not a good football group right now”

After the Steelers sluggishly beat the Ravens to get to 11-0, coach Mike Tomlin was upset. After the Steelers lost their first game of the season the following week to Washington, Tomlin came off as relieved. Tonight, after the Steelers lost their third game in a row, Tomlin seemed resigned to the fact that his team has lost its way.

“We’ve got a lot of work to do,” Tomlin told reporters after the game. “We’re not a good football group right now. And so we understand the consequences that come with that. We’re working on a short week. We’ve got to be better than what we’ve been. And that’s just the reality of it.”

On Sunday, the Steelers host the 10-4 Colts. If Pittsburgh stumbles again and if Cleveland beats the Jets, the Week 17 game between the Steelers and the Browns will decide the AFC North title.

One of the biggest concerns relates to the performance of quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who completed 20 of 38 passes for 170 yards with one touchdown, one interception, and a grossly subpar passer rating of 62.4.

“It’s not injury related,” Tomlin said regarding Roethlisberger, who didn’t appear on the injury report with a knee issue (or any other ailment) for the second straight week. “It just wasn’t good enough, like all of us — me included. We’ve got to be better.”

So are the Steelers still confident? “We’d better not be confident after a performance like that,” Tomlin said.

But Tomlin still has some confidence regarding the games to come. When asked whether the situation can be fixed, he provided a one-word answer: “Yes.”

Most Steelers fans, who have witnessed far too many close wins and now three straight defeats, surely feel differently. The Steelers need to get it turned around by Sunday against Indianapolis, or the following Sunday’s game could become an AFC North championship game in Cleveland, one that will be destined to land in prime time to conclude the 2020 NFL regular season.

  1. The commentators talking as if the Bengals should go for it on 4th and 1 at the end of the game to “end it now”, or go for it because they’re 2-10, might be the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard…

Let’s see, chip shot field goal to go up 10, or give them a chance to tie/win. Seriously, dumb!

  2. You have to give Tomlin credit. He offers no excuses. He just tells the truth. It’s no wonder he’s one of the best coaches of his era.

  3. Turns out that beating teams with a losing record isn’t so facile and perhaps isn’t a very damning critique of a winning team

  4. I’ll say it again…The Steelers will not win again this season. They won’t win the division and they won’t win the obligatory playoff game they have to participate in. The offense is so far off the rails it needs a complete overhaul. The OC: gone. The QB: gone. The RB’s: gone. The OL Coach: gone. The RB coach: gone. The WR coach: gone. Things were supposed to be better with 7 back, but it’s worse. Rudolph and Duck combined played better than Ben is. The defense is doing what it can but they’re wearing down.

It’s over people. Nothing to see here.

  5. Supebowl teams don’t lose to bad teams in December.

But go on Juju – keep “being yourself” and dancing. Smh.

  6. Tomlin pulls no punches in his comments but he hasn’t been able to turn this around and it has been a month now. Two big challenges loom on he schedule. I think they lose their next 3.

  7. You can start fixing it by firing Fichtner. And if Ben can’t hold the ball for more than two seconds or throw it down field then he should be benched. This team won’t win another game this season.

  8. No Tomlin you don’t know how to fix it. The Steelers are soft nothing physical about them .They need to draft a running back but I hope they draft five offensive line men first. Sorry Pouncy but your O line stinks.

  9. Anyone watching the Steelers this year knew that this team was squeaking by thanks to an easy schedule, a ton of bad officiating, and opponents decimated by COVID-19. Yet, the fans and the team believed their own hype and now find themselves collectively drowning in this hopeless sinkhole of shame. Too bad. They have now been trounced by a good team, a mediocre team, and a very bad team. This obligatory playoff game is going to be an unmitigated disaster.

  10. Ben looks every bit his age. All the punishment he took over the years has caught up with him.

Also, did you see that hit on JuJu? That is going to be on every 2020 highlight reel.

  11. The Steelers are banged up on defense especially at the LB position and the run game has struggled without Conner . That being said their biggest problem is the total meltdown of Roethlisberger . Teams have figured out that he can’t throw the ball downfield so they are able to crowd the line taking away the crossing routes that were so successful for much of the season. His decision making has been terrible , throwing into coverage , not seeing open receivers along with not recognizing coverages . Unless Roethlisberger gets a miracle cure for his dead arm don’t think there’s going to be a remedy for the Steelers to back on track .

  12. Not only are they a bad football team it looks like they don’t even do anything during the week. That team looked totally unprepared and were beaten by a 2-10-1 team. In fact, they made the Bengals look unbeatable. It takes a lot for a team headed to the playoffs to take one of the worst teams in the league and make them look like world-beaters. I don’t expect the Steelers to win another game this year if they can’t beat the Bengals. Whoever they play in the playoffs is going to destroy them. Great late-season coaching job yet again Tomlin.

  13. I miss the days of competent Monday night announcers. ESPN is a kill joy for Monday night football.

A survey of America would show that nobody believes Cleveland can beat Pittsburgh.

The nerds and oddsmakers (far more likely to be correct) would disagree with you.

  15. I said they were frauds for eleven weeks
    They’re proving me right

Ya and a blind squirrel gets a nut nut some times…..so? Raven fans gloating….you got beat twice by the terrible Steelers….no Covid excuses. Steelers have lost their way looking like a very tired, injured, and demoralized team. They could very welll not win again this year and there is questions about Bens health are being kept quiet.

  16. Tomlin is part of the problem. For years he has let some of the players on the team do what they want, thus the entire team is not disciplined. Some of the players believed the hype and now reality is setting in.

  17. The Steelers offensive line is playing like garbage. Villanueva looked like a human turnstyle last night, and so did Okorafor.

  18. The Steelers haven’t had a coach since Cowher left. Tomlin has had more talent at his disposal than any other coach and has nothing to show for it.

  19. Great to see the Worlds team lose again!! Frauds and exposed again, Big Bens done for good. Hang it up dude its over.

  20. The Tomlin haters saying he hasn’t done anything. Try a Super Bowl and no losing seasons since he took over but those are facts that the knee jerk hates don’t like to hear it’s why they say obtuse things….nothing new.

I disagree. Every time his team would play Brady and the Pats he would use a Zone defense and Brady would pick it apart. The entire game….and Tomlin would refuse to move away from “his plan”. No coach has accomplished less with the massive amount of talent the Steelers have had for the last decade.

A SB the only year Brady was injured and not standing in his way. And he did it with Bill Cowher’s team. Since then the Steelers have had decent regular season records and have never even made it to an AFCCG.

  23. I’ve been a Steelers fan my entire life, and I will say that this team has no business being in the playoffs. Sorry, facts are facts, they have far too many problems on this offense to correct before lose and go home time. When the defense lost the ability to carry the team, the season was effectively over. The Steelers have squandered so much talent over Ben’s career that it’s pathetic. I’m not going to sit here and say Tomlin is a horrible coach, but in crunch time over several seasons the Steelers have fallen apart. I will say this, had they had a Noll/Belichick type coach, they would have won more than one Super Bowl in the last 10 years. When you look at the talent they have had, there is a reason why they were handed their lunch by the Patriots year after year…coaching. IMO

Point stands, but they made it to the Superbowl and lost after the 2010 season.

  25. A SB the only year Brady was injured and not standing in his way. And he did it with Bill Cowher’s team. Since then the Steelers have had decent regular season records and have never even made it to an AFCCG.

Andy if a frog had wings he wouldn’t bump his butt when he went to jump. Rewriting history or making excuses is just a cover for whining. Injuries happen and change games all the time so what you said is from a losers point of view. Tomlins record so far is better than Belicheat in their first 12 seasons….just facts that you whiners can’t change…..hating a coach for something other than coaching is the source of your comments as your history indicates.

  26. The Ravens, despite the defeat with a COVID decimated squad, showed the rest of the NFL how to beat the Steelers. Just rush 3 and drop 8. The WRs will either drop the ball or Ben will throw short of the first down marker. Every team after that game has used this strategy with success. Chase Young alluded to it after they beat the Steelers.
