Browns vs. Steelers in Week 17 may determine AFC North champion

When the Steelers opened the season at 11-0, it appeared to be a foregone conclusion that they would win the AFC North. That’s no longer the case.

The Steelers are now 11-3 after Monday night’s loss to the Bengals, and the 10-4 Browns still have a chance to win the AFC North.

If the Steelers lose to the Colts next week, and the Browns beat the Jets, both teams will be 11-4, and the winner of the Week 17 Steelers-Browns game in Cleveland will be the AFC North champion.

The Steelers own the tiebreaker over the Browns, so if Pittsburgh beats Indianapolis next week (or if Cleveland loses to the Jets), the Steelers clinch the AFC North. In that scenario, the Steelers would likely rest Ben Roethlisberger and other key players in Week 17 to try to get everyone healthy for the playoffs. Roethlisberger said after the loss to the Bengals that he’s not 100 percent healthy and no one else is either.

But if the Steelers lose to the Colts, and the Browns beat the Jets, Week 17 becomes a very big game.

  1. If the Bills hold the #2 seed, we could see Miami two weeks in a row, in Buffalo….. In January…..

  2. As it should. What a treat that would be.

May the fates align and give us a week 17 AFC North title game and hopes for the beleaguered city of Cleveland.

  3. That would be a seriously beneficial turn of events for the league if that scenario came to be. Highly desirable from a money perspective.

  4. All you Steelers fan were whining and complaining when the Ravens games got shuffled around and you benefited from playing us with a depleted roster. Had we been full strength you’d be out of the playoff picture entirely right now.

  5. Except it won’t at all be a huge game thanks to the NFL’s new playoff format.

In the old format it could potentially (depending on Bills results) have been for the all-important bye that came with the #2 seed. Now the winner gets to host the Ravens, Dolphins, Titans, Colts, Browns or Steelers, while the loser plays @ the Titans, Colts, Browns or Steelers. I.e. really not much of a difference.

In the old format we’d have great races in each conference for the all-important #2 seed. (Think about what a disaster it was for the Pats when they got upset by Miami in week 17 and dropped from #2 to #3 last year). Instead, in this new format, the only thing that really matters is the #1 seed which is 99% locked up in each conference, and that Pats loss last year wouldn’t have really changed a thing.

So congrats NFL. You needlessly changed what was perfect and killed an enormous part of your late season intrigue/excitement by doing so. Hope those two extra Wild Card games are worth it #greed

  6. Given the Bills victory over the Steelers last week and both being 11-3 that makes the Bills the #2 seed in the AFC..

  7. The Factory of Sadness has been so great for so long at not only disappointment, but in raising the hopes of a desperate populace each time, only to leave them to free fall to the pavement.

  8. The Colts are the better team and the Jets aren’t winning again so this is very much happening.

  9. Ravens fans actiing all big and bad now. You still have an RB playing QB, and your coach still whines. Get over it, your team has been figured out.

  10. Careful what you wish for Browns fans. If the Colts beat the Steelers and assuming the Browns beat the Jets to set up this game to decide the North winner IF the Browns lose to the Steelers they very well may be out of the playoffs entirely if the Ravens and Dolphins both win out which is highly likely. This is from a Browns fan! Ravens would be 11-5, Dolphins 11-5 and the Colts would be 12-4. It would all come down to what Tennessee does. Ugh.

  11. Does it matter? Either team is playing the first week of the playoffs thanks to the Steelers poor play the last few weeks.

  12. I just do not see Miami winning out unless the Bills decide to rest players. They have a tough game vs Raiders which is definitely winnable but playing the Bills in week 17 is anything but winnable.
Ravens have the easiest remaining schedule but they will get the brakes beat off them in the playoffs as Jackson has been figured out and doesn’t shine in big games. Browns and Bills right now are the 2 most dangerous teams. Sorry KC fans, they were beatable in the last 2 games they played.

  13. Its already win or go home time for the Browns. They are currently in the de facto playoffs. They own their destiny still. Time to show who you are, Baker. LFG!

    —–

From what we witnessed last night, an RB playing QB would be a major upgrade for the Steelers.

  15. what do the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Edmund Fitzgerald both have in common?

say tuned to week 17 – we’re about to find out.

  16. The Steelers have 3 playoff wins in the past 3 years but the important thing to remember is that Tomlin has never had a below .500 season.

  17. Sorry, I meant that the Steelers have had 3 playoff wins in the past 10 years. 3 playoff wins in the past 3 years would be some kind of dream world.

  18. At one time, this was the best rivalry in football. Those days are gone but the great news is it looks like the AFC north has 4 great teams so the football should be fun for a few years.

  19. To be honest, with Covid being a factor the next two weeks, why not start the playoffs a week later and give every playoff team a week rest ? Yes, it would be unfair to the two teams that deserved byes but think how more intense the football would be and it would prepare teams for a 17 game, moved up season for next year …

Covid infected teams seem to be quiet now but that could change by wild card weekend, like many people thought awhile back.

  20. Why do I feel like the steelers will lose the next two games and leave the Ravens on the outside looking in for the playoff while they still get in.

  21. I see us getting our butts whipped in the next two games. This team right now couldn’t beat a high school team.

You guys are looking towards week 17, I am looking towards next year to see how we reload. We are done this season. Ben has a noodle arm, no run game, Oline is weak, the defense can’t stop the run, Team leads the league in dropped passes, OC has no imagination in calling plays, and on.

  22. I truly feel KC will get another loss before the playoffs which will enable the Bills to have to beat Miami to get that possible bye … it would definitely help the Ravens, Colts, Browns or Titans.

KC is 13-1, already beat Buffalo (11-3). If both teams finish 13-3, KC has the tiebreaker. Buffalo is not getting a bye.
