Monday Night Football: Josh Allen, Stefon Diggs carry Bills to 38-9 win over Patriots

It was perfectly clear on Monday night as to which team was heading to the playoffs as the AFC East champion and which team will be watching the playoffs from home for the first time in 12 years.

Josh Allen and Stefon Diggs emphatically carried the Buffalo Bills to a 38-9 victory over the New England Patriots on Monday night. Allen tossed four touchdowns on the night, three of which went to Diggs, as the Bills earned a season sweep of the Patriots for the first time since 1999. It didn’t even take four full quarters to do it as Allen and Diggs both earned a seat on the bench for most of the fourth quarter.

Allen completed 27-of-36 passes for 320 yards and four touchdowns while Diggs caught nine of those passes for 145 yards and three scores. In the process, Allen set the Bills franchise records for touchdowns in a season (34) and completions (375), surpassing the previous marks held by Jim Kelly and Drew Bledsoe, respectively.

The Patriots actually led 3-0 after a 45-yard Nick Folk field goal on the opening drive of the game.

It was all Bills from there. Buffalo would score touchdowns on four straight drives that didn’t include a lone kneel down to end the first half.

After a 22-yard Tyler Bass field goal, Zack Moss scored on a 5-yard touchdown run to give Buffalo a 10-3 lead. Cam Newton scored on a 9-yard touchdown run to pull the Patriots back within just a point after a missed extra point from Folk.

Lee Smith caught a 4-yard touchdown pass from Allen as the Bills lead grew to 17-9 before Diggs hogged the rest of the scoring output. Allen and Diggs connected on a 50-yard touchdown as Buffalo took a 24-9 lead into halftime. Diggs would add touchdowns from 18 yards and 8 yards before the two took a seat on the bench for the remainder of the night.

Newton completed just 5-of-10 passes for 34 yards before being pulled in the third quarter in favor of Jarrett Stidham. Stidham finished with 44 passing yards on 4-of-11 passing in his limited action. Newton’s 34 yards passing are the fewest for a Patriots starting quarterback since Scott Secules had just 16 yards passing against the Bills in 1993. Secules left the game with an injury after just seven attempts.

  1. The Patriots had 78 combined passing yards between Newton and Stidham. Belichick might be one of the greatest head coaches in the history of the league, but he is a horrible general manager.

  2. The Patriots had a run of dominance that is as impressive and awesome as any in sports history. Congrats to that team and their fans.

It is over. Tonight was the statement game. Bills fans have gone through a lot – but our day has come.

Bring on the playoffs. Bring on KC. I like this team’s chances.

  3. I’ve said it before on this forum. Cam Newton must have some unreported injury. Throwing into a one-hopper in the direction of N’Keal Harry was the doctor’s confirmation. The labs came back positive.

wishing him well in his return to full recovery.

  4. The Pats need a new QB, among many other things. But before anyone throws dirt on them, they have a lot of cap room next year (at the minimum about 45 million dollars) and they are likely to have 6 draft picks in the first four rounds of the draft, too.
Bill Belichick will get this team back in the hunt next year, you watch.
One thing you can guarantee — Cam Newton will not be the QB of the Patriots next year. Whoever it is will be a guy who can throw the ball much better than Cam can.

  5. KC, Buffalo and Pittsburgh on top of the AFC, Miami competing with Indy and NE back to mediocre. 90’s retro is back in style.

  6. The best part of this game was watching Bill’s telephone-flinging hissy fit tantrum on the sidelines.

  7. Bill sure loves him some Cam Newton. My biggest fear is that he’ll bring him back next season.

  8. Soak up the season Bills fans. Coach Bill will sign D Haskins and will take back the division next year.

  9. Prediction:
    Bills make the SB.
    So does Tampa Bay.

Brady breaks their heart one last time.

As for my Pats–well, it was a hell of a run. My oldest kid has never seen a losing season of Patriot football, and he is in college.
Retool, rebuild and climb the mountain again.

  10. Enjoy it Buffalo. Keep in mind your team still hasn’t won a playoff game this century and will have a tough opponent. Good luck.

Who do you think it’ll be, Stidham or Haskins? Maybe a flyer on Paxton Lynch or someone like that? Welcome to QB hell most other teams have to go through from time to time.

  12. Zero chance Cam is back. And Stidham is not the answer either. The Patriots will be better when 10 of their actual starters return next year, but they’re going to have to be creative in FA to get a QB and make the playoffs. The team on the field this year is not even a college all-conference squad due to injuries and opt outs, so it’s hard to read too much into this. But they are no longer a dominant squad and the Bills look primed for a multi year run in the AFCE.

  13. @zonedout100

Your biggest fear should be they bring back Bill next season. So much for plugging in any QB to the ‘system’ – Brady WAS the system. As a head coach, Bill was sub – .500 pre-Brady and is now sub-.500 post Brady….Speaks for itself as Brady at 43 rolling again to the playoffs 1st season on a new team. BB was too stupid to admit it was all about Brady and retire when he left….too late….this seals it. Great coaches win with different teams and/or QBs (like the Tuna won with 4 different teams and 5-6 different QB’s). Bill rode Brady..PERIOD, full stop.

  14. Cam once again can’t even get 100 yards passing. He’s not a threat to run or pass. The Patriots defense gave up plain and simple. They won’t beat the Jets next week if this is how they play.

  15. Cam Newton threw for 34 yards…A STARTING NFL quarterback threw for 34 yards… let that sink in for a moment

  16. “The Pats need a new QB, among many other things. But before anyone throws dirt on them, they have a lot of cap room next year (at the minimum about 45 million dollars) and they are likely to have 6 draft picks in the first four rounds of the draft, too.

I’ll watch – but it’s unlikely. Getting a QB isn’t as easy as it seems.

I expect we’ll see more of “phone throwing” BB going forward. They have a long way to go before they get back to contention.

Tell me again, how many winning seasons has Belichik had sans Tom Brady under center?
    ———-
But, but, BB went 11-5 with Matt Cassell and just barely missed the playoffs. /s

  18. Not sure what I would enjoy more;

The Bills going back to the Super Bowl, or the Patriots sinking into the Atlantic Ocean.

  19. Open your eyes voters: Josh Allen is your MVP and Diggs is your Offensive Player of the year.

  20. Brady is the goat. I’m sure if he’s still playing for the Pats, they would certainly sweep the Bills again but it’s too bad he ain’t.

  21. Cam Newton was never accurate, but he’s officially a shell of his former self now and certainly not “the next” leader in New England. Hello free agency.

How was NE “mediocre in the 90’s”? Maye the early 90’s BeFore Kraft purchased the team

Kraft purchased the team in 94, 2 years later they were in the SB (96)

    Playoffs 94, 96 97 98

Since Kraft purchased the team in 94 this will only be the third time in TWENTY SIX years that the Patriots will finish below 500.

  23. It brings me great joy to think about the years of pats fans talking about “haters” and other fan’s “tears” in regards to the pats. Let us all embrace this moment, and the many like it that will surely come.

  24. Where are all the fans with the Patriots gear. Can’t seem to find them…..just saying.

  25. While I am not a Patriots fan, I find it a bit amusing that so many are dismissing 20 years of dominance by the Patriots in one season of transition.

I suspect Belichick will have this team competing again next year.

It will be hard to beat this Bills team going forward, but the chants of “ding dong the Witch is dead” are a bit premature in my estimation.

  26. Belichick PRE-BRADY 5-11 2000 NE Patriots
Belichick POST BRADY 6-10 2020 NE Patriots

Brady 11-5 36 TDs 4,234 Yds TOP 5 in Yards and TD’s (man I bet he wishes he was still in Belichick’s “system”. Belichick’s “system” has produced now 6 LOSING seasons for him when Brady is not his QB (4 with the Browns, fired and 2 with the Pats). Brady CREATED the Belichick “genius”, he CREATED the dynasty, all coaches that leave Brady fail ; Belichick, McDaniels, Weis, Crennel, Obrien, Mangini, Patricia (Flores is doing well, thats it). Brady IS the System, NO Qb can do what he can do past, present and future. 668 yards in his last 4 quarters. At 43 STILL the best QB in the game

  27. Cam has thrown for a little over 500 yards in the last FIVE games COMBINED!!! In an age of QBs slinging the rock all over the field with pass happy rules To assist, he is awful. This season as a whole has shown he is done, he is getting paid what he was worth this year, veteran minimum and would be a good backup to a real starter next year.

Not saying Stids is the answer, but why not start him the last couple games of the year Bill? Strange.

With a ton of cap room, COVID hold outs back, I still feel they’ll be ok next year (not THIS bad anyhow) but QB is a glaring issue obviously that we fans haven’t had to question for 20 years. Now it’s our time.

  28. Funny how when it’s not New England, its a “statement Game”, or as the MNF announcers repeatedly, almost gleefully said, “the Bills are really piling on”. When its NE, its unsportsmanlike “running up the score”. Same with Brady and Manning: Manning would throw for 7 TDs in a game and it was a “performance of the ages”; Brady would throw 5 TDs and it was “typical NE unsportsmanlike conduct”. At least times are changing and the villain is gone. We can all just enjoy the future “performances of the ages”?

  29. 38 points on that New England D. I know they are missing key players, but it was never this bad. Might as well put a LB back out there Bill.

  30. How did Newton ever throw for 397 yards against Seattle earlier this year? It seems like ages ago, and everyone in the media was saying “the Patriots need to lock this guy into a multi-year deal right now”. Thank goodness no one jumped the gun on that.

What we saw last night will never be tolerated, and it’s not just Newton, the team is not good. Forget Gronk—there are no NFL caliber tight ends on this team, and the best receiver they have (Meyers) would be a 3rd option on other teams.

Pats will need get a legit QB (Stafford, Ryan, Garopollo) in the offseason. Hoyer is the only one under contract. Belichick had no plan this season and just hoped, and this is what you get.

    _____________

I don’t know who it will be. But Bill has been good at finding QB’s in the draft. My guess is he’ll bring in a veteran who is in an accurate passer and can hold up for one year while he develops the QB he drafts. I could see Philip Rivers coming to New England. Rivers is a way better passer than Cam Newton and still wants to play. He’s 39 now, so that might be a deterrent. If Carson Wentz wasn’t owed so much money, I could see Bill trying to trade for him. Who knows? Maybe he’ll talk to the Niners about Jimmy Garoppolo?
The only sure bet is it won’t be Cam Newton. The only way Newton comes back is if he switches positions to TE or somewhere other than QB. He is simply a terrible passer now.

  32. The Patriots are a fine example of what happens when an all pro, super bowl winning quarterback decides to retire, move on after his contract expires,or is cut because of old age and diminishing performance and his old team never prepared for that day.why didnt they prepare three years ago by drafting or signing a young a quarterback to sit and learn behind Brady, now look at their situation.the Packers were scoffed at unmercifully by the fans and media for taking quarterback Jordan Love instead of a reciever that may not have success in the NFL.Love sits and learns from AR for three or four seasons and will be ready to continue the success the Packers have enjoyed under Favre and Rodgers for the past 20+ years.a lesson can be learned there.

I wouldn’t get my hopes up if I were a Pats fan, BB has probably the worst record in the NFL when it comes to draft picks especially 1st round draft picks. They got lucky when they picked Brady in the last rounds and BB has rode his coattails until this year every since. I dont see the Pats being relevant again while BB is the headcoach this team is hot garbage and BB isn’t going to have too many free agents banging on his door wanting to play for him and his lovable personality.

How was NE “mediocre in the 90’s”?

    ****************************************************************************

The 90s includes the entire decade, not just the part you cherry-pick to spin a narrative.

Pats W-L by year, 90 onward (below). Overall 90s record 68-92, .425. Mediocre. # seasons at .500 or below — 6. Mediocre. Four playoff appearances across 10 years? Bengals did better in the ’10s, and everyone knows they’re historically mediocre. Only thing that sets the Pats apart is that they made it to a SB and lost.

    90: 1-15
    91: 6-10
    92: 2-14
    93: 5-11
    94: 10-6*
    95: 6-10
    96: 11-5*
    97: 10-6*
    98: 9-7*
    99: 8-8

Wasn’t just the 90s. Pats were mediocre and inconsistent through the 80s and 70s. Couple years of decent teams and then awful. Over the first 30 years in the NFL (1970-2000), 9 playoff appearances, 7 of which were lost in the wild card or divisional round. Mediocre.

So, yeah — the Belichick/Brady era has been wildly successful. No one denies it. Before then, the organization has historically been completely mediocre (or worse), not just in the 90s. To argue otherwise is to be in denial.

  35. After everything that Brady helped the Patriots accomplish, I still do not understand why Kraft had to be a cheap skate and not pay him. How many “hometown discounts” did Brady accept, and restructure his contract so that they could put pieces around him? They disrespected him because of his age, and as we all see, at 43,Brady’s still got it. Kraft and Belichick are getting exactly what they deserve for letting him walk.

  36. Great coaches win with different teams and/or QBs (like the Tuna won with 4 different teams and 5-6 different QB’s). Bill rode Brady..PERIOD, full stop.

    ___

So, Chuck Noll won how many SB without Bradshaw?
    How about Lombardi without Starr?
Or maybe Bill Walsh without Montana?

Oh yeah, also like the way you raise up Parcells for winning while for most of those seasons he had Belichick as his d coordinator….

  37. The latest comments all allude to NE being cheap. (1) They weren’t paying Brady $50 mil guaranteed, and (2) they NEED to move into the future NFL with a QB that can run when needed. Sure, it may not be Newton, but Brady had 34 yards rushing last year. After 12 games, he had 8 yards for the Bucs. In the playoffs, he is going to face 3 man rushes and 8 in coverage, just like last year, because he can’t run. He can’t option, he can’t scramble; he’s a one trick pony as they say. Fortunately, he has some receivers in Tampa. Belichick probably told him “Look, we don’t have WRs now so you are going to struggle. Best to extend your career where they have receivers. We’ll be there in a year or two, but not now. Good luck.”

  38. Let’s hope the Bills don’t see this as their Superbowl.

As a Patriot fan I knew the ride would not last forever.

To the giddy non Pats fans, you can never take away the memories I have, and you will never have them.

    Go Pats

    p.s. Go Bills

  39. After everything that Brady helped the Patriots accomplish, I still do not understand why Kraft had to be a cheap skate and not pay him. ____

Brady got 25 million to play in Tampa…..at the time, the Pats had 5 million in cap space….they couldnt sign him even if they wanted to. He would have had to take another hometown discount to stay in NE.

They didnt disrespect him, they couldnt afford him. They spent a ton of money to win 3 Super Bowls from 2014-2018 and it finally came back to bite them.

    READING COMPREHENSION!

I said when Kraft purchased the team in 19994..

I don’t care what happened when Victor Kiam owned the team. It has nothing to do with the 70’s and 80’s that was under different ownership
It was a comment on how they have been since he purchased the team

  41. 1985 Super Bowl – as a Wild Card. Yeah, they got crushed, but Chicago was crushing any team representing the AFC. Just happened to be NE. Once a decade to the Super Bowl was decent back then. Remember the 49ers and Cowboys dominance? Funny, we never heard “Oh, it was all Montana, or Walsh, or Johnson or Aikman.” Those teams were regarded as loaded TEAMs. Even the Brady haters admit that the early 2000’s Super Bowls didn’t include stellar Brady performances; they had tough Defenses.

  42. I’ll watch – but it’s unlikely. Getting a QB isn’t as easy as it seems.

    ____

Just because the Bills couldnt get their act together for 20 years doesnt mean every other team will follow the same path…..Just remember, before Brady, the Pats had Bledsoe for 9 years and made a SB with him.

Lots of good college QB’s coming out this year, and probably some decent free agents. We will see what happens.

Personally, I like the way all the Bills fans already have their chickens counted…like nothing could possibly go wrong and they will be on top for 10-15 years. We all know Buffalo sports are cursed so…..

  43. Let’s hope the Bills don’t see this as their Superbowl.

    ___

If they had, they would have lost!!! : )

  44. The “Brady can’t run” narrative makes no sense. He NEVER could run, and it didn’t matter. Marino couldn’t run. Manning couldn’t run. The list of non-running great QBs goes on.

It’s in vogue now to have a running QB. Great. Generally speaking, the more you your QB is a “runner”, the less passing ability he has. The shorter his career effectiveness you have. If Lamar loses a step (which, sooner than later, he will), he’d better become better passer than he is now or he’ll be benched for someone else. NFL defenses tend to figure these one-dimensional guys out. Newton is 31, and he never learned to throw. Why? Because he’s a runner, and he never improved his throwing accuracy and mechanics.

The NFL is still, and will always largely be, a throwers league.

Newton has run for more yards just this year than Brady has in 10 years. What does it mean? If you want to win against the best teams in the league, it doesn’t mean anything.

  45. Diggs was a smart man for wanting to get away from mr and Mrs inconsistent, zimmer and his cousin Kirk.

  46. The Pats have a down year and the fans of all the teams they have been pounding for 20 years act as if somehow this means their team will now become dominant! Unless you are a Chiefs fan, it won’t.

But what’s even more interesting is not long ago everyone was claiming that Brady was merely a “System QB” and a product of BB’s genius. Now it’s somehow in fashion to reverse this philosophy!

  47. –Funny how when it’s not New England, its a “statement Game”, or as the MNF announcers repeatedly, almost gleefully said, “the Bills are really piling on”. When its NE, its unsportsmanlike “running up the score”.–

Psst…they pulled their starting QB for the 4th quarter when the game was out of reach.

  48. Don’t worry Bills fans, the Bills will once again disappoint you come playoffs. Their defense stinks and Josh will choke. Watch.

  49. I love ‘FB fans’. The Vikings traded Diggs, who’s excellent. His cap hit is 15 mil THIS YEAR. They got a 1rst, which they used on Jefferson and 3 other picks. Jefferson is also excellent, and is on the books for 13 mil over the NEXT 4 YEARS, with a 5th yr option. Good fit for the Bills, but the Vikes did ok themselves. Pats fan.

  50. Congratulations to Bills and Dolphins! Bills with Offensive Coordinator Dabol from the Patriots and Dolphins with a Patriots Head Coach, Flores. They will both do well.
Next year their godfather BB will be back, reenergized with a whole slew of draft picks and free agents along with 8 returning from Covid hiatus. It will be a good show. The universe will return to its natural order.

  51. For people still denying that Josh Allen should be the MVP, please stop just looking at passing. Although you could make the case his passing is best in the league, when you add 418 yards rushing and 8 rushing touchdowns it isn’t close. Josh is the MVP.

  52. As a Patriots fan all I can say is thank the Lord this strange year could give some satisfaction to Bills and Fins fans. After 20 years of misery the threat of these fan bases leaving the NFL was very real. I hope they meet in the AFCCG and one of them goes on to glory. I have every confidence that with all the money they will have next year and getting back all the players that opted out, the Patriots will be division leaders once again. But if they can’t do it this year, best another AFC East team does it in their stead.

  53. I don’t think the outcome of the 2020 Patriots reflects as much on Belichick, as it actually reflects on Cam. Cam truly is an incompetent, coach-killing QB that no longer belongs in the league. Hell, Alex Smith or Joe Flacco would’ve taken this team to 10-6. All it needs is a competent QB that can toss 225-250 yards per game, move the chains and keep turnovers to a minimum. Cam is playing his high-risk superstar game of football, except he’s no longer a superstar.

  54. Oh please… the Bills are in the playoffs and are leading because they have a piece of the Patriots with Brian Daboll running their offense. Let’s see how they will do if Daboll got poached by other teams from them. Same with the Browns with O’Shea and the Dolphins sniffing for a playoff spot. The Patriots is hallowed out with their coaches being poached down to their scouting personnel. Even their QB coach is poached now too. The Patriots are picked through the bones, but they will rebuild. It’s not just the absence of Brady.

  55. The Patriots had a bad year because they’ve had too many bad drafts, bad cap management and bad FA signings in a row. As well as a brain drain with coaches and front office personnel. They have little talent. Maybe some good drafts, wise spending of a lot of cap money and a shrewd QB signing or trade will change it up. Belichick didn’t lose it all of a sudden. IMO, he won more games for this franchise than Brady did.

    —————————————–
Yea the Bills defense really stunk it up last night…Pats 9 points, 201 yds gained, 3 sacks, 20 minutes time of possession..

  57. “Pats haven’t drafted well”. * News Flash * They typically pick 28 to 32, remember? Many upper picks have been decent. Remember Jerod Mayo (DROTY), Nate Solder (traded picks), Donta Hightower, chandler Jones, McCourty? Then a few steals in later rounds like Gronkowski, Hernandez (too bad he was a murderer), Garropolo, Brissett, Collins? Yeah, you can’t keep all your high priced talent – that’s the parity of the league, and one or two stars doesn’t get it done (Ask JJ Watt in Houston). Key to NE success? The Oline. Dante Scarnecchia should be in the Hall of Fame. Maybe the first Asst Coach to get there? He was key to 20 years of NE success. Heck, he turned a D1 wrestler into a serviceable O lineman!

  58. The oats will rebuild, assuming BB remembers how to draft. His last few have been crap. But when they do rebuild, they won’t dominate like they did.

  59. This idea that bb is good at finding qbs? Seriously? I mean, other than brady…. jimmy g? He’s basically trash in SF. Maybe he comes back to NE and plays well there. But he’s not Tom Brady:

Bb is a great coach but he doesn’t win that many Super Bowls with just any qb. He and Brady worked well together but they don’t dominate with jimmy g. Not saying they suck but…::

It’s fun wAtching pats fan cry. As if they expected the ring of terror to last forever, literally. The problem is so many pats fans are so young they don’t remember the years where NE was good then they weren’t. Get over yourselves and stop trying to pretend we should all bow down to you

    READING COMPREHENSION!

I said when Kraft purchased the team in 19994..

    *****************************************************************************

The person you replied to pointed out that the Pats were mediocre in the 90s. You then replied, saying “How was NE “mediocre in the 90’s”?” but then tried to redefine the 90s as only the period where Kraft was there. That’s because you’re trying to spin a narrative, which requires you to avoid/ignore information that doesn’t fit said narrative. My reading comprehension’s fine — it’s your logical reasoning that’s lacking.

The 90s is the entire decade, not just the half-decade (slightly more) when Kraft was around. My broader point is that you don’t just have to keep it within that decade; the Pats were historically mediocre before then.

  61. The Pats haven’t drafted a Pro Bowler since 2013. There are players all over the draft. Sony Michel? N’Keal Harry?? Go look at the players that were after them. Good thing they’re good at the UFAs because the only studs they’ve drafted in the last 5 yrs are Thuney, who’s gone next year and the punter.

I know Bills fans are giddy, & have a good team, but… I’ve been listening to Buffalo sports talk, & kind of funny. Forget the Wildcard game, & the Steelers, whom you’re just going to role, you’re already making plans for the AFC Champ. game at KC. It doesn’t work like that, you haven’t won a Playoff game since 95′, how about you win 1, before you make the AFC Champ. game? Indi is no slouch BTW.
