Bill Belichick bristles at report that Cam Newton and Patriots likely will go their separate ways

Now that the 2020 season has ended for the New England Patriots, questions can be asked regarding the future of the team. After Sunday’s win over the Jets, coach Bill Belichick was asked a question about a Sunday morning report from ESPN regarding the future of quarterback Cam Newton.

Here’s the exchange.

Q: There was a report on ESPN today there’s an understanding between you and Cam Newton that you’ll be going in different directions this offseason. Is there an understanding this was Cam’s final game?

A: Is that another one of your anonymous reports?

Q: That was from Adam Schefter this morning.

A: I don’t think that’s what Adam said. You should talk to Adam about that then. Great question, thank you.

Here’s what Adam said: “Both sides expect that it will take them to a different place and a different direction in 2021 with Cam Newton likely moving on and the Patriots in search of a new quarterback for next season.”

Later in the press availability, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com said this: “The question about Adam, he had reached out as a colleague, and he wanted to make sure what he had said was represented accurately, that it wasn’t a report, it was part of an overall discussion.”

Newton separately was asked, without reference to the report/discussion/whatever, whether he anticipates returning.

“Listen, I have my desires,” Newton told reporters. “I know where my heart’s at. I know the things, who I am. But as far as that, I can’t really speak on it right now. But just my whole time here in New England has been a blessing. I’ve learned so much about myself, about great teammates, unbelievable coaching. Yeah, so I just see how it goes . . . from there.”

Unless Schefter’s report/discussion/whatever was inaccurate — and he said what he said — it’s going nowhere.

  1. “Great question, thanks for asking” is like when Ocho used to say “child, please”. We all know what it really means.

  2. Is it likely Cam Newton comes back? No.

But is there a chance he does? Of course. Maybe they miss out on the guys they want in the draft and can’t work out a trade for someone.

Belichick is wisely shutting down this reporter so if Newton did return in 2021 they don’t attack him with gotcha questions.

  3. If Bill has any hopes of returning to winning football, he needs to go after a true NFL talent!

Oh I hope this doesn’t mean that there’s a chance Newton is coming back.

They have shown no confidence in Stidham. Next year is a building year. No chance of a SB. Why not if they can get him for cheap?

  5. The future of how this current pandemic will be the major determination as to how Bill will approach on how he builds the core of this team….that & the salary cap…..If NORMALITY hasn’t returned to the world by the beginning of next offseason ANYTHING is on the table at that point as the season will become a FARCE yet again….

Because we just lived through a year of Cam Newton and he has proven he’s just not that good. We don’t need 2 years of Cam. It’s time to move on and find the next Patriots QB.

  7. Good. I hope Belichick, the Brady-less loser, let’s his pride get in the way and brings Cam back as the starter. Will make repeating as AFC East champs that much easier.

  8. I think Belichick should use him as a tight end or receiver. There’s so much potential there. We’ve seen him easily stiff arm and mug linebackers. Why get rid of someone who is cheap, athletic, and talented? They don’t grow on trees.

After 10 years of calling the end of the patriots you are finally correct.

    Congratulations

  10. Why would they bring Newton back when most of the time he was really bad? It wouldn’t make sense.

Cam has not been the part if the team thats been “tough to live through”.

  12. Pats unlikely to resign Cam IMO. It’s a pass-first league and clearly that isn’t Cam’s strength. The contrast with Brady was huge. I expect a return to playoff relevance next year IF THEY CAN FIND SOME RECEIVERS. There’s plenty of cap space and it’s clear that the team’s desire to win is unchanged. No one should forget that the Patriots are still a high-performance organization with great ownership.

Let the Stid era begin and draft Kyle Trask as his backup.

As a Jets fan you would love this. There will be no “Stid era” however.

Playing devil’s advocate, you could make the claim that Newton was bad because his skill positions were absolute garbage, so bad that even the GOAT could not get past the first round. And that was with better corps then what Newton has now.
Do I think Newton should start? No.
Do I think Newton should be resigned, as a backup/Taysom Hill role, especially on the cheap? Possibly.

  15. Cam is 100% coming back next season, and he’s coming back as Patriots starting QB. I’ll tell you why. Cam Newton signing was supposed to be one of those “Bill Belichick genius” moves, proving once and for all that the Patriots dynasty was more down to Bill than Brady. But this season’s disastrous performance from Cam and Pats has exposed Bill Belichick for the fraud that he is. Now everyone realizes Pats dynasty was down to Brady, and not Belichick. And Belichick knows that. So he can’t let Cam go and admit he was wrong. He’ll try again with Cam next season to prove his “genius”. Of course, he’ll fail again, and the narrative that Pats were all about Brady will only get stronger.

  16. I’m not giving up on Stidham….. I think Bill PURPOSELY injected Cam into the Pats line up to BOTH take the pressure off Jarrett & put a buffer between him & Brady as well as give him an additional year to learn the Pats system & playbook…..A MASTER PLAN UNFOLDS…..

  17. So funny that Schefter got caught with an anonymous story by Bill Belichick. The reporter thought he had a ‘gotcha’ moment…..Schefter is a knucklehead anyway….

  18. Here’s the problem for all those Patriot fans out there….you are a mediocre team. Most mediocre teams don’t get to pick #1-#5 like the Bills, the Browns, the Jags and the Bengals to restock with the best talent. So, you gotta hope that you find someone else like Brady, a QB hopeful that become the GOAT like Brady…..otherwise, welcome to the world of mediocrity!

You may be right. Cam is a better runner & receiver than all the TEs on the Patriots right now.

  20. Brady out
    Cam out

When will they realize they need talent at the play maker positions. The problem is the QB has no talent to work with.

Go. Bring in some high end QB talant. Someone better than the two league MVPs that left maybe. See what happens without playmakers.

  21. Cam Newton’s return might not be “likely,” but it wouldn’t be shocking if he did. Cam didn’t play well this year, but the Patriots are more than a QB away from being a contender again and the roster next year is going to have plenty of new faces across the board. If they draft a QB they think might need to sit a season or two, who would you rather have in the QB Room with him– Stidham (who has little experience) or Newton (who has been praised for his leadership)?

  22. The Patriots better be looking for a new quarterback. Newton is obviously not the answer there. I can see the coach not wanting to talk about it. Just in case he gets stuck with Newton next year.

  23. I’m not a Cam fan, but I did watch his passes doink off receiver’s hands continually. That and no offseason to speak of, and the fact that EVERYONE says our offense is incredibly difficult to learn makes me wonder if a second year of Cam isn’t that bad of an idea. OTOH, he can’t stay long anyway so maybe we should just move on and take our lumps.

  24. Mr. sub .500 minus Brady is very defensive and uncomfortable, how dare they question my decision making! After riding Brady’s coattails for 20 years, the exposure of his ineptness is very clear. Bill will never have another winning season. Karma really wreaking havoc on him

  25. Don’t write off the old man just yet. He won 7 games with a petty bad on field roster (injuries, opt outs, brady leaving). 8 time super bowl winner, gets the benefit of the doubt.

  26. No doubt they need much better receivers, but of course I come down on the side of Brady being the MAIN reason the Pats won so much. Clearly Belichick knows a ton of football and is an excellent coach, but as his own GM he just as clearly is simply not all that good. He should just coach and let a REAL GM come in and take over that role while Bill focuses on coaching ONLY. Great coach; lousy GM.

  27. As bad as Cam looked in games it’s frightening to imagine how lost Stidham must have looked in practices. Genuinely shocked he never got a start just to see if he’d look better with a full week of prep. The fact he didn’t speaks volumes of what Bill thinks of him.

  28. It’s a good idea to act like Cam is possibly coming back. Why burn a bridge? Obviously he’s not option A, but if you miss out on a top QB in the draft, or lose out on Stafford. It’s not a bad idea to bring in a late pick and throw Cam in to be bridge for another year.
