Doug Pederson on QB change: “I was coaching to win”

USA TODAY Sports

The first rule of Tank Club is never talk about Tank Club.

The Eagles clearly and obviously took a dive on Sunday night against Washington, removing quarterback Jalen Hurts and inserting backup Nate Sudfeld in an obvious effort to lose the game against Washington and improve their draft stock from No. 9 to No. 6. But the Eagles can’t say that they did this; otherwise, they’d face the wrath of fans, media, and/or Roger Goodell.

And so coach Doug Pederson told reporters after the 20-14 lost to Washington, presumably with a straight face, that it was his decision to replace Hurts with Sudfeld, and that “I was coaching to win.”

No one is going to believe that Pederson was coaching to win. The trained eye believes that Pederson received an organization directive, from G.M. Howie Roseman or owner Jeffrey Lurie, to make the changes in order to secure the higher spot in the draft order.

It’s not unprecedented (more on that in a separate post). But the circumstances make it more glaring.

It was Sunday Night Football. Last game of the season. A win would have given the Eagles a boost into the offseason, and it would have provided a jolt of confidence for rookie quarterback Jalen Hurts.

The loss, given the way it happened, likely will have the opposite effect — and perhaps then some. As one source with extensive NFL experience observed after the game, “It makes sense to do it, but there’s something that happens to your team when you do it. Something happens culturally.”

It’s a cultural phenomenon that Pederson will have to immediately address in the annual exit interviews with players. But what can he say? I was coaching to win? Because that’s what he already said.

The fact that it happened confirms that Pederson will be back in 2021 (unless he went rogue, which is unlikely). The fact that it kept Hurts from winning the game and enhancing his standing in the eyes of the media and fans will actually make it easier to reset the quarterback position, if that’s what the Eagles decide to do, and potentially re-embrace Carson Wentz.

Regardless, and setting aside whether and to what extent the league decides to investigate the situation as an affront to the integrity of the game, the Eagles lost a piece of their soul tonight. It won’t be easy to get it back.

  1. Total tank job for higher draft pick and to screw over the New York Football Giants. Dan Snyder wrote another check tonight…conspiracy theory lol.

  2. Philly legend Seth Joyner said it best in the post game show.
He has never been more ashamed to he associated with the Eagles organization.

  3. I have no dog in this fight, but Pederson clearly tanked the game. He had the chance to tied with a FG, but decided to go in a 4 and goal from the 5 yard line. Then he decided to switch QBs, really? Players are out there risking their health and Pederson throws away the towel. What an utter embarrassment.

  4. Do 3 spots in the draft make really a huge difference? Why destroy the spirit of your team and the respect of your players just for 3 spots in the draft?

  5. Wow, it would be bad enough if Pederson tanked for a higher draft pick but if “The fact that it kept Hurts from winning the game and enhancing his standing in the eyes of the media and fans will actually make it easier to reset the quarterback position, if that’s what the Eagles decide to do, and potentially re-embrace Carson Wentz” is why he did it, that would be indefensible.

  6. While it disagree with his decision, Giants fans can’t blame him for not making the playoffs. They had 16 games under their belt and only won a handful. That’s why they didn’t make the playoffs .

  7. As a Washington fan, I would have liked to have won that game on the merits that both teams gave it their all.

This just felt a bit dirty and took some of the joy out of winning the division, given all the team had to go through the season.

  8. This is a stupid take, once a new season starts, players forget about the prior season. Losing a meaningless game at the end of the year won’t affect next year. Not to mention the roster turnover.

  9. It’s more likely about avoiding injury for Hurts rather than just draft order. Keep or trade Hurts, you don’t want him freak injured in a pointless game. If he got an ACL he’s worthless for next season as a player or for trade.

  10. Well said Florio. It was the most sickening thing I’ve seen in 50 years watching NFL football.

  11. It seemed like a strange decision, but to be fair, Hurts was not exactly setting the field on fire out there.

  12. Jalen Hurts:
    7-20, 72 yards
    0 TDs, 1 int
    25.4 QBR

Yeah. Totally would have won if they left Hurts in.

  13. Wait, where was wentz this game?
If you were to bench Hurts, would it not make more sense to go back to a player who will give you a chance to win in Wentz, or the unknown in Sudfield?

  14. Maybe so. It could also be seen as a team about to lose their “franchise” QB protecting the one remaining asset they have. With the number of season-ending injuries we’ve seen this year, I’m a bit surprised we saw as many franchise QBs (and other star players) in meaningless games today as we did.

  15. I totally agree. It was disrespectful to the fans and the league to not attempt to win. The fact that teams “with nothing to play for” routinely compete hard and beat better teams is one of the things that makes the NFL the best pro sports league in the country.

  16. Let’s not get carried away here…Washington has the best 2nd half defense in the league rarely giving up points…and Hurts was 7-20 for like 70 yards…we saw what happened to Mike Evans today…the rain began to pick up and if Jalen gets Hurt out there in a meaningless game…you’d be ripping Peterson…so please just give it a rest!!!

  17. It’s the Philadelphia Story. 76’ers have been tanking for years and have gotten no where. It does affect the culture to tank. It can work in the NBA where one player can make a team relevant, not so much in the NFL. This will backfire and set the franchise back years. The will to lose has now infected the team.

  18. Look, you don’t care about losing and want the higher draft pick? No problem. Just go out there with your young guys and say you want to evaluate them. But, Hurts had kept the Eagles in the game and you had the ball TWICE in FG territory and you don’t kick? You are getting stops and have the momentum AND THEN you start pulling players? Bad, bad message to send your guys. I get it. Miami has the #3 pick and the way they played Buffalo, I’m not upset they missed the playoffs and got a higher pick of their own. But you don’t slam the brakes late in the game to lose. That’s a slap in the face to all competitive sports…

  19. Right, Doug. But You certainly didn’t show any Brotherly Love towards the Giants, did you? Not that you should have, but I’m just sayin.’

  20. Coaching to win? No. He was coaching for a better draft pick. And there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. All these buffoons who are getting all sanctimonious about the integrity of the game need to grow up. It accomplishes nothing to win a meaningless game, and helping your organization long term was the smart decision.

  21. He sure was – he was coaching for Washington to win.

Zero integrity in tonight’s regular season finale. Zero.

  22. What Peterson just did was disrespectful to the Eagle players, fans and the integrity of the NFL.

He should be fined and suspended.

What a black eye to the NFL.

  23. Kudos to Coach DPete. You know your team wasn’t making it to the playoffs regardless and you went up 3 spots in the draft order. Sad that it was so obvious and it could have cost the Giants a home playoff game, but it was the right move for the organization.

  24. Yep … nothing like the NFL embracing a great story like Smith and Rivera … sorry but someone is left to Hurts.

  25. Once I found out just how many people Philly was sitting I knew they had chosen to hand the division title to Washington. Congratz NFL your final regular season game of the 2020-21 season was a complete fix.

  26. No investigation. Pederson is full of it, but they have every right to bench players. Other teams rest players the entire game even. If the backup went in with instructions to deliberately throw picks that’s another story, but there’s nothing wrong here.

  27. I believe Doug Pederson did what was best for the Philadelphia Eagles. A wise man told me many years ago that you have to worry about yourself because if you don’t worry about yourself nobody else will worry about you . The Philadelphia media does what they always do and that is they blow everything out of proportion like they do with every Philadelphia sports team.

  28. as Roscoe P. Coltrane would say ” shame shame, everybody knows’ your name.”

  29. Yep. It’s a bad move that will resonate with anyone associated with or with the potential to be associated with the Eagles for decades to come.

  30. You also confused everyone playing and watching the game, no wonder they lost…

  31. Why didn’t any follow-up questions include, “So Doug, you’re saying that putting Nate Sudfeld in the game gave your team the best chance to win?”

  32. even Jim Schwartz can’t take it anymore. I wasn’t a fan of Schwartz as a HC, but he is a very good DC. if he is jumping off the ship it shows a real lack of leadership in the program. as soon as Frank Reich went to Indy the offense completely fell apart, w/o Schwartz the D will definately suffer. Eagles are on a downward spiral of their own making.

  33. The entire NFC East (players and teams) should be ashamed of themselves with the exception of Alex Smith.

  34. If Doug Pederson is the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles when I wake up tomorrow, I’m writing a letter to my congressman. As an Eagles fan I’m disgusted. Disgraceful.

  35. Why exactly are NFL players and coaches required to be at media sessions again ??

They aren’t allowed to answer honestly, and if they do… their answers are then generally editorialized anyway.

It is the epitome of worthlessness.

  36. Fired. Before daybreak. Not kidding.

I will be boycotting Wildcard Weekend regardless solely because of what the NFL has clearly devolved into… Zero interest in this ridiculous and shameful product!!!

  37. It’ll be forgotten about in 5 days when the playoffs start and there’s 6 games with a bunch of really intriguing matchups. I’m not defending what Doug did, but half the eagles weren’t playing last night anyway. Sitting 9+ players is more of a tank but no ones talking about that.

The giants stunk this year. The cowboys stunk this year. The eagles really stunk this year. No one in the nfc east deserves to complain that they didn’t make the playoffs. And it serves the NFL that they flexed this game to Sunday night football anyway.

It’s not like the eagles were winning when the move was done either

  38. I like Pederson, but it was clear after the first two series with Sudfeld that winning wasn’t going to happen.

  39. Smart idea to allow for the chance of improved draft picks under the guise of spreading the work. It might be unethical not to do that.

  40. I’ve been an Eagles fan since 1970. I’ve watched Mike McCormick, Marion Campbell, Rich Kotite, and Ray Rhodes coach this team. I’ve seen teams that went 3-13. I’ve seen them play guys like Mike Boryla, Pat Ryan , and Koy Detmer at QB. But I have never been as embarrassed to be a fan of this team as I was last night. They showed a lack of regard for the veteran players that have busted their rear ends for this coach for 5 years, the New York Giants, the NFL, and any fan who watched that debacle on TV. I hope the league strips the Eagles of their 1st round draft choice ( Howie wouldn’t know what to do with it anyway) and gives it to the Giants. Pederson should be fired today. He will never have the respect of any player in that locker room again, nor should he. I don’t think Doug realizes what he lost in terms of organizational culture last night that he can never reclaim. Cris Collinsworth seemed embarrassed for the entire organization on NBCs SNF telecast. I know as a fan, that I am humiliated to call myself an Eagles fan.

  41. The Eagles have done a nice job with their rapid transformation from Super Bowl champion to perennial dumpster fire. Congrats!

  42. So if he was playing to win, someone should ask him if the eagles were fighting for the division title and had a shot at the playoffs if he still would’ve put sudfeld in.

  43. WFT is going to get blown out by Tampa Bay. The Eagles obviously tanked to get the top 5 pick.

  44. “I was coaching to win”

    To quote Inigo Montoya:

“You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.”

  45. I really wanted my Patriots to lose against the Jets. They would have had the 12th pick as opposed to 15, and ahead of SF in the QB draft hunt. But Belichick was coaching to win too. It just looked different from Pederson’s coaching to win.

  46. We pretty much had this figured out when they deactivated Wentz. It was like a B movie.

  47. After watching the Cardinals/Rams game with two awful backup quarterbacks, I can understand pulling Hurts for another reason – injury. Imagine tearing an ACL in the last game of the year, and a meaningless one at that. He’d likely be out for most of the following season. Likely not the reason he was pulled, but another reason to pull him. Moving up in the draft from 9 to 6 is very significant.

  48. No one believes that, Doug.

As a WFT fan, I feel a little cheated that the other team just gave up. Like we didn’t really win the game, but that the other team just took their ball and went home.

I don’t know how any Eagles player can be happy right now. I mean, you put your body through a lot to play your best for your team. Then this?

I thought Pederson was a good coach, but I lost a lot of respect for him. Can’t see Belichick, Reid, or Carroll doing something like that.

  49. You literally put in the 3rd string QB who is a FA at the end of the year to “evaluate” him and he proceeded to turn the ball over multiple times with no points.

You need to own the tank. The entire season was an embarrassment, no reason game 17 should be any different.

  50. The only thing he was coaching to win was the 6th pick in the draft. I had no dog in this fight as I am not a fan of either team (or any NFL East team) but as an NFL fan I didn’t see much effort there.

  51. I don’t claim to know what goes on in Pederson’s tortured mind, but the guy is still a SB winner and I assume, more of a competitor than to throw away a winnable game for meaningless draft position.

Moving to 6 from 9 doesn’t mean anything if another team trades ahead of them and takes the player the Eagles really wanted.

They just aren’t any advantages in losing the respect of your players and coaching staff and being mocked publicly just to move up a couple spots in the draft order.

  52. I will tell you how bad it is what the Philadelphia iggles Football Organization did last night ,now mind you there is no guarantee if Hurts stays in the game the iggles win , but if the NY Giants ever get the opportunity to pay the iggles back in a similar situation the NY Giants wouldn’t because that’s how embarrassing it is to your legacy , Pederson will carry this stain around amongst his peers forever !

  53. The 6-10 Giants whining that the Eagles screwed them out of a playoff spot. Hilarious

  54. The only thing the Eagles could have done by winning is lose 4 spots of draft capital. He did exactly what he had to do for the franchise. If the NFL was concerned in any way about optics, next time don’t put a game featuring 5 win teams, one of which is playing for nothing, on Sunday Night Football. Don’t be stupid.

  55. No one throws a game to move up three draft slots from six to nine if it means missing out on the playoffs.

  56. Awful as they are, the Lions played to win and nearly did.

The Eagles did not. At 2 min warning I predicted they would jump offsides at WFT 4th and 1. They did.
Should lose first round draft pick.

  57. He didn’t want to get his franchise player hurt in a meaningless game and you trash the franchise like they are now the 1920 White Sox? What if Jalen hurts tore his ACL and the Eagles lost 23-20 in overtime? That would be losing a piece of their soul. Doug put a QB out there who he didn’t have to worry about getting hurt behind a depleted offensive line in an obvious pass situation.

  58. Time for a draft lottery. My suggestion is that you have 8 groups of 4 teams each, and have a lottery for each group. The 4 worst teams will all draft somewhere between 1-4, the next 4 draft somewhere 5-8, etc. Pederson should be fined and suspended and Philly should lose a 2nd or 3rd rounder this year. How is the NFL going to maintain the facade of integrity with stuff like this going on. They already have their hands full explaining away questionable officiating.

  59. Players must feel demoralized when you sabotage their efforts to win with coaching/management decisions designed to bring in personnel who may be their replacements.

  60. They need to go to some type of draft lottery. Maybe even every team, every round. They could even make it a 2 or 3 day TV thing. Just like the draft. Maybe hold it a couple months before the draft

  61. In fairness, Pederson may have been told specifically not to play Wentz. Wentz gets hurt in the last, meaningless game? There goes any chance of trading the guy. I’m sure they’ll be at least shopping him around.

  62. If Pederson doesn’t get fired, that proves that the tanking orders came from the very top. I expect some of the Eagles’ players to ask to be traded. I don’t believe every player on that team is going to be ok with what they did.

  63. Eagles fan here… Yesterday, I could only assume that Hurts was removed a a preplanned QB rotation to somehow evaluate Sudfeld. Hurts should have remained in the game (unless he was injured) as the Eagles know what they have in Sudfeld. The Eagles tanked for a higher first round pick. This will happen over the off season: Curry, Ertz, D. Jackson, Jeffery, and Sudfeld will be gone.

  64. Giants fan here….We had no business being in the playoffs at 6-10. We should have won that inexplicable game we blew in Dallas to start the year and we wouldn’t have needed the Eagles to win last night. I’m happy with the progress this year. Hopefully we build on offense in the draft because the defense is looking competitive.

  65. The entire Philadelphia Eagles management group is a disgrace to have tanked the way they did to lose that game. Goodell should punish them by moving their draft pick from 6 to 32 and launch an internal investigation on insider gambling. Make the owner, GM and coach’s lives miserable for the next six months by having investigators crawling all over their finances looking for potential betting irregularities. That should discourage other teams from ever pulling something like that again.

  66. I had the game on in the background and was only half paying attention. When suddenly Sudfeld was in at QB I had to rewind to see why. And what a crappy thing to do to Hurts.

This is an example of the soulless, cold, corporate side of the NFL that we all know exists but don’t like to see. Losing on purpose is a bad look, and it’s also a bad feel for the players. You can’t talk about winning in one breath and then do something like this without losing the room. Not that it was Pederson’s decision.

    Still having fun, Eagles?

  67. That was a full on tank job. You want to see what you have in Hurts not Sudfeld. What a sham. I got lucky & teased PHILADELPHIA +9 & UNDER 50.5 but anybody who lost deserves their money back. I was so mad last night. And I won my teaser & I’m not really a fan of either team. GO BILLS.

  68. For once I agree with florio. Eagles organization was a disgrace and embarassment to anyone who ever competed in sports. Would that liar Peterson done this if the Linc had fans in attendance!

  69. Whoever made the call to put Sudfeld in should be blackballed from the league. Reprehensible. It’s not like the Eagled needed to go out of their way to lose this year. If he was coaching to win, Carson Wentz would have been dressed and ready to play. Clean house, that was a total embarrassment.

  70. It’ll be forgotten all about in a weeks time. It was a primetime game so it’s been blown into a big deal but teams tank all the time, it really doesn’t matter.

  71. There will be a power struggle with Philadelphia. Critical decisions have to be made and the salary cap will play a huge part in this process. Additionally, there is a power struggle between Roseman and Peterson which will play out with Wentz, Hurts and Ertz. Roseman wants Wentz gone (trade bait), and Ertz to walk. Peterson wants Wentz and Ertz resigned. Roseman allowed the roster to get expensive, old and injury prone. I would not be surprised to see Peterson no longer with the Eagles. He was too reliant on Reich and DeFilippo. Wentz hasn’t been the same. Instant gratification has ruined the team and someone should pay.

  72. Where do you start with something like this? Pederson obviously threw the game, Wentz wants out, Nate Sudfeld feels like crap knowing he was put into the game to tank, Jalen Hurts is not likely the future franchise QB of the Eagles…I didn’t think it was possible to be more incompetent in running a team this year, but the Eagles organization from top to bottom outdid themselves. And I’m an Eagles fan…

  73. If, If, If, If, If. Some WFT fans say, “if Rivera doesn’t go for 2 vs. Giants first game, they ‘would have won that one’ making this situation moot. But who knows if WFT wins that game or not? Who knows if Eagles win this game or not? Hurts ran for two scores but also had like a 25 QB rating with 74 yards passing. Not like he was dominating the WFT defense.
If, if, if, if. As a WFT fan who have heard these ifs from MY fellow fans, gotta say that’s ‘loser talk.’

  74. As a Giants fan, the only thing the Eagles lost was a meaningless game. We as fans need to get over ourselves. The Eagles owe the Giants (and the rest of the NFL) nothing. Moving on to 2021.

  75. The tank job was obvious to everyone who watched that debacle. Fine the coach, strip the draft pick or at the very least, make them pick ninth so you don’t reward this despicable behavior. Forfeit the game if you aren’t trying to win. The integrity of the game is in question when this stuff happens. That joke of a quarterback didn’t have any idea what was going on. Worst tank job I can remember and his bs answers at the press conference didn’t fool anyone. Tank eagles tank. Pathetic

  76. As a Giants fan, I can’t say that with 6 wins we deserve to be in the playoffs. But still, I have never seen a team give up in the 4th quarter of a close game. Definitely not the NFL way.

  77. As fans, we jokingly talk about “tanking” all the time. Remember “Tank for Tua?” But don’t joke with the players about that: I know more than a few professional athletes, and they have a competitive fire in them that you and I don’t get…they play with a super-intense desire to win. To have a head coach do what he did goes against the very fabric of what his players are made of. Don’t for one minute think that the players don’t care about what Pederson did. They were trying to win that game, and the coach torpedoed their effort. He just lost a lot of respect in his lockerroom.

  78. not only is he a loser in the worst sense of the word, he is a blatant liar. Oh, but Roger got Kamara for wearing shoes with Christmas colors so I feel sure he is confident he is doing his job rather than worrying about complete corruption of the game ethics and credibility

  79. The Eagles must hate the Giants a lot more than the Washington Football Team. To hand the victory to Washington like that is an obvious sign that the coaching staff were not interested in winning the game. Hurd gave the team a much better chance to win. Was it possible that they wanted to see what Sudfeld and some of the young guys could do in pressure situation? It is possible, but, I would bet that picking @ #6 in the NFL draft was more tempting than winning a “meaningless” game.

  80. Browns fan here. Can confirm it is difficult to change a culture of losing. It’s contagious, bro….contaaaaagious.

  81. If Sudfeld had come in and won the game would he have drawn the ire of Philly management for not following orders? clear tank job and they should be fined heavily and lose a draft pick by the league for it.clearly not up to NFL standards.

  82. Hurts looked like crap. Say what you want, but if he had more than 74 yards passing and wasn’t missing every receiver then the tank story would hold water. They were a four win team. There was nothing to play for.

  83. The whole O-line had looks on their faces like “why are we even bothering?” Jalen Hurts looked like he had to actively try to look professional on the sideline. What a terrible way to end the season. A few draft picks is not worth establishing a losing culture and fomenting skepticism in the locker room. Especially given the crapshoot nature of draft positions beyond maybe the first few, and even those don’t always pan out. Stunning. That game last night was half soap opera, half farce. Shame, Eagles. Shame

  84. Tank or not. If fans from the giants want to complain, you should have taken care of your own business. Play better and you wouldn’t have to worry about another team’s game. Play better and win your dam own games.

  85. those eagles players were trying their best to win and pederson kept whackin them in the knee caps…how could you play for that man again??

  86. The league needs to do something to make sure that doesn’t happen again.

You want to play Sudfeld the entire game, fine. Announce it before the game the way the Steelers, Chiefs and other teams did.. Don’t pull your starter in a competitive game with the playoffs on the line.

This was a horrible look for the league and Goodell has to be seething that it happened on national TV in the last game of what was otherwise a really good day of football.

  87. You are all missing the tanking elephant in the room: The decision to pass on a chip-shot field goal to tie the game at 17-17 on 4th and goal. It was not 4th and inches, it was like 4th and 5. Curious, for sure.

  88. And after the NFL worked so hard to get the Giants into the playoffs earlier in the day. Rodger dodger gonna be big mad at Eagles.

  89. The tank not only impacted the Giants. It also impacted Detroit, Carolina, and Denver in Philly moving up ahead in the draft.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the league comes down hard and sets an example. NFL could take away Philly’s third rounder. Philly’s third rounder is worth about 240 points which is the value gained (250) in them tanking. That would prevent this from occurring again.

  90. Here is a wild thought. Perhaps the Giants less than mediocre 7-9 record is primarily to blame for them missing the playoffs.

  91. This team needs a major change at the top. In one fell swoop, they have dismantled any winning culture that may have been left from the Super Bowl season.

Pederson’s performance at the presser was worse than pathetic. He could barely keep a straight face. His legacy, whatever that was, is permanently tarnished.

The soul of that Super Bowl team moved to Indianapolis. It’s time they find a new one.

  92. But when other teams decide to rest their starters for a meaningless season finale, everyone is ok with it. There was no preseason this year so why not evaluate the backups? I do think philly was ok with the loss, but its not like the players weren’t playing hard. Pederson even acknowledged before the game that sudfeld was going to get some playing time, so why was everyone so surprised when it happened?

  93. So what!!!! Eagles did what was right for them. The NFL does the same thing when they mess up adding more teams to the playoffs and making the last weekend less interesting because there is only 1 bye. NFL just looks for how to make more money instead of whats best and most interesting for the game.

  94. Let’s take Pederson at his word, that he wanted to win. If so, he is a terrible coach because he thought he had a better chance with Sudfield, which was obviously wrong.

If he was tanking, then he sold out his current players, he will never be trusted by current and future players, and, therefore, he is and will always be a terrible coach. Either way, Pederson is a terrible coach.

  95. Just listened to Peterson on morning radio interview. He stumbled all over himself. At one point he indicated the plan going in was to get Sudfeld in the game. He was asked if he benched Hurts and said no. Then he backtracked and said he put Sudfeld in because Hurts was struggling. So which was it – a PLAN or a decision in the MOMENT? Peterson is insulting the public. This was a tank job. Call it what it was.

  96. You go for it on 4th and 5 instead of going for the tie with a field goal. You put Sudfeld in there in place of Jalen Hurts, who give you a way better chance, and you are “coaching to win”? Come on, Pederson. Don’t insult our intelligence. This was deliberate. There should be some form of discipline for this.

  97. For those of you quoting Hurts passing stats, did you HONESTLY feel like the Eagles were in a better position to win with Sudfeld in there? Hurts had 2 rushing TDs. He could have probably won that game with his feet along. With Sudfeld you knew it was over.

  98. There’s an argument to be made that going with a backup with more experience in the system after 3+ quarters of futility actually is a better move to win the game.

But with the game being meaningless for them and Hurts still very much in the evaluation stage, it seems like just letting him play it out is what makes the most sense. No one would have questioned Pederson for sticking with Hurts.

  99. Forget the fact the Hurts couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn, it was in the best interest of the Eagles to do what they did. Why would anyone be surprised.

Remember when the Colts tanked an entire season so they could draft Andrew Luck?

Do 3 spots in the draft make really a huge difference? Why destroy the spirit of your team and the respect of your players just for 3 spots in the draft?
    —-
1 meaningless game isnt going to “destroy” the spirit of the team. 3 spots in each round is going to make a big difference, especially when you are talking #6 vs #9.

When it was announced prior to the game that Pederson would be back, everyone should have known that Philly was going to lose. Philly winning yesterday does nothing for them. Philly losing there makes the a better team next season.

Come on, Pederson. Don’t insult our intelligence. This was deliberate. There should be some form of discipline for this.
    ——–

Philly went for it on 4th and goal in the super bowl as well. Do you think they were tanking that game too? Steelers sat tj watt and Roethlisberger too. Where’s the uproar there?

  103. IMO a change of coach and getting rid of some problem players are in order. time to rebuild. Wash isnt going away and they have a better D then the Eagles O so fix it or keep losing

  104. It was Sunday Night Football. Last game of the season. A win would have given the Eagles a boost into the offseason, and it would have provided a jolt of confidence for rookie quarterback Jalen Hurts.

    ———-

Have any evidence of this? At all? I’m a Bills fan and we won a lot of garbage games late in the season to hurt our draft standing, and if those wins “gave us a boost into the offseason” and a “jolt of confidence” to the young QBs who won the games, it never seemed to show by the start of next season when we went right on losing again.

  105. I’m still stuck on the idea that the Giants, having won all of 6 games, are whining that the division championship was stolen from them. Seriously? You won 6 games all told.

If Pederson doesn’t get fired, that proves that the tanking orders came from the very top. I expect some of the Eagles’ players to ask to be traded. I don’t believe every player on that team is going to be ok with what they did.

    ————-

Yeah, they would have been totally amped about going 5-10-1, but this horrific tank, when they put in a backup in a meaningless game they were already losing to a 6-9 team of scrubs, and a 4-11-1 record is what’s going to really demoralize them.

    ——————————————–

Exactly. Players don’t “tank”, organizations may, but that’s a front office thing.

A player’s game tape is their resume. None of them are gonna sacrifice their career so that their team can jump a few spots in the draft.

    Jalen Hurts:
    7-20, 72 yards
    0 TDs, 1 int
    25.4 QBR

Yeah. Totally would have won if they left Hurts in.

Hurts also scored both Eagles TDs to that point because WFT couldn’t stop his running down close. He was their best chance to win because Rivera had to commit a defender to him. As Al and Cris noted, once the QB change was made, Washington could have a conventional pass rush with no fear of Sudfeld running on them.

  109. Jalen Hurts:
    7-20, 72 yards
    0 TDs, 1 int
    25.4 QBR

Yeah. Totally would have won if they left Hurts in.

    —————————–

You conveniently left out the factthat Hurts scored 2 rushing touchdowns.

The only chance that Philly had to win was with Hurts. Sudfeld hadn’t even practiced with the first team.

Pederson tanked on purpose. THere is no other explanation.

Do 3 spots in the draft make really a huge difference? Why destroy the spirit of your team and the respect of your players just for 3 spots in the draft?
    ———————————————————-

    *Laughs in Mitch Trubisky*

  111. The real travesty is how awful the NFC East was this season. It’s downright embarrassing.

  112. Doug Pederson, if you’re telling the truth, and we all know that you aren’t, The Patriots will gladly take Jalen Hurts off your hands, and you’ve got Sudfeld. Problem solved.

  113. Philly went for it on 4th and goal in the Super Bowl because New England was scoring a touchdown every time they had the ball.

This was way different. It was a low scoring game, and Pederson could have tied that score with a field goal, but decided to tank instead.

  114. He talked about it all week. Clearly planed out. Fundamentally right for the organization . Fundamentally wrong for team sports. All things considered, all the upcoming changes. The right move. The issue is don’t lie to the fans.

  115. More mysterious than why the eagles put in Sudfeld to lock up a #6 pick….was why in the heck did McGill not get kicked out for diving at Alex Smith’s half-leg way after the play?….way after the DT’s offsides momentum already stopped. This game was a black eye for the league in many ways.

  116. “It accomplishes nothing to win a meaningless game, and helping your organization long term was the smart decision.”

I disagree. Without the battle in the final regular season Pats Giants final game of 2007, a “meaningless” game for the Giants, I do not believe they would have won the Super Bowl.

  117. The issue with the argument that it was to protect Hurts is – WHY DID HE START THE GAME THEN.

    That doesn’t logically hold water.

  118. Are the people upset about the game last night, Eagles fans or Giants fans? I have to think that most Eagles fans would rather the #6 pick in each round, than the #9 pick.

  119. “Crush the spirit of the team” lol

    Get outta here.

    1. No one will remember nor mention this come draft time

    2. Jalen Hurts had 72 passing yards and an INT when he got pulled.

How come no one complained about this when Tua got pulled with better stats?

  120. Sudfeld has been the second or third string quarterback inPhiladelphia for four years. He hasn’t gotten much PT, but that was by far the worst he has played. Can’t blame Doug for his unexpectedly poor play. Also Hurts wasn’t exactly lighting it up. His rating was only 25. The plan all along last night was for Sudfeld to play. That’s why Wentz was deactivated.

  121. Fans of Giants, Cowboys, and WFT are hoping Howie keeps Pederson around for many years.

  122. He should get a huge fine from Goodell and he should be fired for cause from the Eagles. Terrible sportsmanship and a bad look for him for sure. And Wentz was a healthy scratch

  123. Hurts also had 2 rushing TD’s and they were only down a field goal. There goes your argument, egomaniac247.

  124. The Eagles should have their first round pick taken away. This was ordered from the top down. It was so blatant. I’ve never seen anything like it. Pederson should be banned from coaching in the NFL.

Pats had 12 pts at halftime right when eagles ran the philly special on 4th down. 12 pts in one half is hardly scoring on every drive. They failed to put up points on multiple drives at that point

Adam Gase was coaching to lose all year no one said a thing.
    ——————-

Gase was coaching to win. He just sucks as a head coach, though.

    ———————-

There would have been an uproar if they had started those two in a meaningless game. No one would have given a damn about the Eagles, had Pederson not claimed he was playing to win, after having put in a 3rd string QB.
