Report: Cowboys fire Mike Nolan

Mike Nolan likely knew a few weeks ago his future was not in Dallas. Everyone else certainly knew.

Nolan tried to switch the Cowboys Defense from a 4-3 base to a 3-4, and it did not go well. The Cowboys produced one of the worst defenses in team history.

The Cowboys fired Nolan on Friday, Jay Glazer of FOX Sports reports.

Former Falcons head coach Dan Quinn or Falcons interim head coach Raheem Morris both could prove a good fit, depending on which direction Mike McCarthy wants to go with the defensive front.

The Cowboys defense played better late in the season, finishing 23rd in yards allowed and 28th in points allowed. The 473 points allowed was the most in team history, topping the 436 the 2010 team allowed.

The 2,541 rushing yards allowed was just under the team record 2,636 that the 2000 team allowed.

  1. Hard to feel badly for Nolan after he said in effect that Alex Smith was not tough enough to play pro ball. He really threw Alex under the bus.

  2. Why do GMs continue hiring coaches that are all wrong for the personnel their teams already have in place? Switching from a 4-3 to a 3-4 (or vice versa) is a major change that you don’t just do at the drop of a hat. No question that Nolan needs to take the fall for the abysmal play of the Cowboys’ D this year but you look at the players he inherited and he was fighting an uphill battle from Day 1.

Literally couldn’t have been more wrong.

  4. Jerrah needs to hire a real GM and not his son. Cowboys are destined to the same terrible team while he is in charge. He wont fire himself but he should.

  5. “The Cowboys defense played better late in the season…” Did the writer mean, the Cowboys only had one team in their last seven games that finished the season with at least a .500 record?

  6. How does this guy continue to get jobs. I would have thought after his stint in SF that would be enough. Instead, people keep hiring this guy.

  7. Achtung; Big Mac you better win big next year or it is gonna be a bad day for you on Black Monday 2022.

  8. I’ll volunteer to coordinate the D. I’d run a 5 man front. 1 linebacker. 3 Corners. 2 safeties. And all of the bacon in the world.

  9. Can’t fire McCarthy as he was Jones’ personal hire but he can fire anyone else that he didn’t personally hire.

  10. The problem is the owner Jerra. He’s going to pay a mid-level QB top-level money. As a Packer fan, I’m thankful Jerra is the GM.

  11. I`m a Washington fan and I knew all along that Mike Nolan was not a good Defensive coordinator from his days here in Washington!….Shouldve kept your last defensive coordinator, cant think of dudes name but he was much better than Nolan!
